Know Me By Name

The Guardian (Part 1)

Eyes followed me as I walked down the corridor. Eyes always followed me whether it was because I was half of the Original Love or because I am the go-to guardian angel, I never knew. The stares had never bothered me like they did Matthew. He believed they stared at him for who his parents were; I was inclined to believe it was because he was massive. If I wasn't used to seeing him every day, I would stare too.

My eyes met theirs, and they immediately looked away. Sighing, I made my way to the Council's room. Michael smiled at me as did my father, Uriel. I returned their smiles with one of my own and stood where I could see all seven members.

"Welcome, Kaylee. Normally, we'd ask another guardian to take this on, but this soul just doesn't want to lave. He's attached to another," Jophiel said.

"A soul has possessed someone?" I furrowed my brow, trying to wrap my head around the very idea. "Is that even possible?"

Raphael nodded his head. "Yes, apparently it is possible. Unfortunately, this one needs to go below."

I tried not to roll my eyes at their terms. They had been alive for eons, but they could not bring themselves to say Hell. It was like a dirty word on their tongues, afraid it would scorch them if it was said.

Nodding my head, I turned to leave. Matthew thought he had the worst job. Unlike him, I had been to Hell. I knew true terror.
********************************************************************************************************
My journey to Earth was always the same, a long, white tunnel that took me near the human I needed. Although, if he's been possessing a human, I doubted his soul was human. It must be a fallen angel otherwise one of my guardians could have handled it. This one would be harder than most to take. How would I get their soul without hurting the human's?

I was broken out of my thoughts as the sound of blaring car horns reached my ears. The city was loud, and I always got odd looks when I was here. It might have had something to do with my clothing. The black leggings and half shirt always caused people to stare. At least they never saw my wings. That would probably cause a riot. Sighing, I headed north. There was this pull that told me where to go, and it was usually right.

The pristine area of the city I landed in faded to the poorer district. The streets turned to crumbling concrete and the buildings looked like they were ready to fall down. It was like the city ran out of funding once it hit this area. There was no lighting and the shadows definitely seemed darker. I took a deep breath. I was a guardian. No one could hurt me.

Eyes followed me once again as I walked down the street, following the pull that tugged me toward a small apartment building. The possessed human had to be in there. I hoped that I could save them. Taking another deep breath, I kicked in the front door.

Rats scattered as did a few scraps of paper. My face scrunched up in disgust. The pull pointed me up the stairs. Of course, the last floor. The pull stopped at the last door. The door was a faded green color with brown spots on the right side. I assumed they were dried blood. A strong smell of blood came from the space under the door. Maybe there was no hope for this one.

I let out a small sigh. Knocking on the door, it swung open on the second tap. A medium-height male stood on the other side. His hair curled to his shoulders in blond waves. He had a lean, sinewy body, arms folded behind his back. His eyes were all black, no difference between the pupil and the outer spaces.

"Welcome, guardian." His voice was deeper than I expected. "The human will die without me. Are you willing to sacrifice them?"

I swallowed. "Sometimes human life needs to be sacrificed in order to restore the social construct. One life to stop you, Oliver, is worth it. It's time to leave this place. Your soul will destroy the body and then where will you be? Stuck on Earth. You can't go back to this place, Oliver. Just make it easy on me and let your soul leave this man's body."

"Why would I leave?" He laughed. "This body keeps me here. Let me stay, guardian. Let me stay."

"I can't, Oliver. Just let go." I took a step toward him.

"And what? Go to Hell? Do you know what Hell is like? I've been to it and escaped it. I'm not going back." He stepped away from me, fear clouding his face.

He was not going to make this easy on me. I'd rather not kill his corporeal body if there was a chance the human might still be alive. I took another step forward and lunged at Oliver. It was a good thing I was fast. He hit the ground, and I was able to reach inside his body and pull out the demon's soul. The man's eyes faded to light brown. I waited patiently for his chest to move, while Oliver's soul struggled in my grasp. His chest finally rose, and I flahsed out of there.
