Know Me By Name

Found Part 3

KAYLEE'S POV
1900

"Alek!" My scars pulled as if my wings wanted to burst. They had been doing that the more I trained my son. Wings wouldn't come back, not unless He gave them back. Wings had to be earned.

"Mother," he said, turning to face me. Every time I saw his face, I thought of his father. Aleksander may have had my hair, but everything else was Matthew. It sometimes pained me to look at him. "Why does my back hurt?"

How did I explain to my son the concept of angels? There was so much history and his life had really only begun fifteen years ago. That was the thing about the Fall, you never knew where you would land. I had no idea how long he had been Falling for.

"It feels like something wants to tear out of my back." His hazel eyes met mine. "Why is that?"

I touched his back, careful to avoid the scars. "It's a long story, Aleksander. It's not one I think you're ready for yet."

He shot me a look. Like any teenager, I could see the angst beginning. Alek wanted to fight back against what I was saying. He wanted to rebel. I understood. My son was growing up in a world he shouldn't be in, a world he didn't belong to. His powers were forming, powers that belonged in Heaven.

"And my father?"

My eyes fell to the ground. "I'm not ready to talk about him yet. That injury is far too fresh. Just like you were."

Aleksander nodded. "How soon, Mother?"

"Soon."

ALEKSANDER'S POV
1910

My back hurt again. It was a pain I was becoming used to but it still shocked me when it happened. Ten years ago, I had asked my mother when she would tell me, the time still wouldn't come. And whatever supposed powers I had were forming faster.

James hit the knuckles on my hand. "Pay attention to my lessons, Zander."

"It's just the history of the Roses, James. You, Brian, Zachary, and Jonathan have all told me the story. You've all shared your histories; only my mother hasn't shared hers."

The warlock's eyes met mine. I could read the sadness in her eyes. "Those wounds are too fresh, Aleksander."

"Don't you think I deserve to know?"

"Yes, you do. Ask her again." James left.

"Mother." I watched as she stirred something in her pot. "I think we need to talk."

Her blue eyes met mine, sadness crystal clear in them. "Okay, Aleksander, it's time you learn." She guided me to the Rose Council chamber. This was the first time I had been in there.

The Rose Council had a large round table made from mahogany. Five chairs sat around the table, all carved from rich mahogany as well. The chair closest to me had a back made of wolves. The wolves were chasing each other, the top wolves had their tails entwined. The chair next to them depicted the Garden of Eden, half formed wings above it all. The chair in the middle only had a heart on top. The fourth chair was covered in various Latin letters, a third eye sat at the top. The final chair was designed with various bats and Italian scripture. I rolled my eyes at that. The vampires weren't even Italian!

"Why are we here, Mother?" I asked, touching the werewolf chair.

"It's time you learned your history, Aleksander." Mother looked at me. "Your father... well, I should start with your grandmother."

I cocked an eyebrow. "My grandmother?"

"Long story short, your grandmother is not a good lady. I fear if I tell you the truth about her, it'll spend too far amongst the Roses. We need the Roses on our side."

"You're rambling," I said. I'd never seen her like this before. My mother was composed; now she was just erratic. I had no idea her history-- our history-- would do this to her. "Don't tell me about my grandmother, just tell me about you and my father."

She nodded, eyes glazing over. "It's a painful story for me, and it's one I get very tired of telling. The last time I told it was fifteen years ago." My mother's eyes met mine.

"What exactly has James taught you?"

I sighed. "Mainly about the history of the Roses. I know a little bit about how the demons and the angels came to be. He told me about the Original Sin and about a lot of the original stuff. Mom, just give it to me."

"Your father and I are Original Love. My name is written on his chest as his is mine. We loved each other very much, and we created you. But the devil marked me, and the Council-- the angel one-- sentenced my Fall. I was pregnant with you. We are Fallen Angels, Aleksander. My powers are still present but dormant. Yours are forming. We need to train you."

"Pause." I looked my mother up and down. "We are angels?"

She smiled and it made her entire face more beautiful, radiant even. "Yes, Aleksander, we are."
