Know Me By Name

Cast Away

KAYLEE'S POV

A hand rubbed across my growing belly. To feel life forming because of love was perhaps the most joyous experience of my life. It felt like nothing else to have our child grow.

"Are Uriel and the rest of the Council still sending you on missions?" Matthew's voice was rough from sleep. "I feel you are too far along for that."

I rolled to face my love. "No harm will come to me, Matthew. I am only called when I am desperately needed." My hand trailed over my large stomach.

"I worry, my love." He pressed a kiss to my cheek and crawled out of bed. "I cannot lose you."

A smile curled my lips. "You won't lose me. I am right here." Tapping my name on his chest, I also crawled out of bed. The Council had already requested my presence.

Jophiel and Zadkiel stared at my stomach. They had never had children of their own, instead devoting their time to Him and His word. Children had never been high on their list.

My own father wouldn't meet my eyes. Ever since he had learned about my pregnancy, he had held me at arm's length. The Archangel refused to show love, and it pained me more than anything.

Then there was Michael. Of all the members on the Council, he was the one I disliked the most. Hatred never took root in my heart, but Michael nearly brought it out. The Archangel reeked of something strange; he always had.

"Guardian, do you know why the Council called for you?" It was Gabriel's voice that spoke.

"I come when called. I do not always know why," I said, my eyes piercing into God's messenger. The Council did not scare me as they did other angels.

The Archangels on this Council believed themselves better than the rest of us. They somehow convinced themselves because He created them first that they were the superior angels. It could be difficult to to be in their presence. And for me, it was much harder having one as my father.

"The Council has been made aware of a problem with you, Guardian," Raphael said softly.

"It is not something you can remedy, Kaylee" Samael looked at me in disgust. "This action will cost you gravely."

I looked at each Council member. What did they believe I had done? I followed God's will and asked for nothing more than what Heaven provided. I could not process what the Council's words could possibly mean.

"It has come to the attention of the Council that the devil's mark is upon you." Michael eyed me. "There is a price to be had for wearing that."

"Michael, I did not choose--"

"SILENCE!" His voice boomed above my mind's chattering. "The Council has determined that you will fall."

MATTHEW'S POV

I raised the sword and swiftly brought it down before their pleas could begin. The sword vanished and the angel's body exploded into light gray wings-- Marcus. I sighed, tired of the killings.

His name faded to black on my forearm, an indication of his true death. The names were the only way I knew who actually needed to survive, who could be saved from the edge of my blade.

Lucifer's constant desire to make all angels Fall made my life difficult, but only a few angels truly needed to meet my sword. Most of the names on my body were demons, and all demons deserved to die according to God's will.

My chest stung a bit, and I glanced down at Kaylee's name. The red seemed slightly darker. My wings burst through my back as I headed home. The stinging sensation grew the closer I got to Heaven. It felt like someone was simultaneously peeling my skin off and ripping my heart out.

When I landed, I walked as quickly as I could to the Council's chambers. Each step increased the pain. The door swung open and as it did, my chest felt like it had burst into flames. Kaylee's name glowed to a bright white, my wings flapped violently, my feathers shed, and blood frothed from my mouth.

No. NO! Something was happening to her. I tried to move, but the pain was unbearable. PLEASE. I had to save her. Angels gathered as my gut-wrenching screams grew louder. More blood bubbled from my mouth and now my chest started to drip with blood. The pain grew.

KAYLEE! I had to get to her. I had to save her. I had to save our baby. My wings fluttered, but they couldn't lift my weight off the ground. She was hurt! I needed to get to her.

The pain started to subside; her name faded to a dull red again. Blood covered my chest, mouth, and wings. My chest seared again. I looked down, tears entering my eyes. Her name turned to black and anger unlike anything I had ever felt filled me. She was gone. My Kaylee was gone!

Then more pain filled me. I collapsed to my knees, my wings folded behind me. Our baby... our baby. A scream ripped from my lips. She was gone, and so was the baby. Rage was the only emotion I had left. It consumed my body and became the single force left as I rose to my feet and made my way to the Council.

Seven of them sat there, staring down at me. Blood dripped off my body, splattering onto the pristine floor.

"What did you do to her?" All my rage, all my anger was concentrated on one person: Michael.

His eyes met mine and all emotions on his face disappeared. He was always a stoic man, but this was just unimaginable.

"Answer me!" The rage exploded as my sword appeared in my hand. The entire Council leapt to their feet.

"Matthew--" Michael began.

"What did you do to them?" Each word was a struggle, but the sword was light in my hand. "Is my child alive or did you murder them as well?"

A picture popped in my mind of the baby being ripped from her womb. My knees buckled as they hit the floor. My once righteous outrage faded. I felt resigned.

"You've killed them." My voice was a whisper. "You made her Fall."

I stood and stared at my so-called father. "What did I do?" I took a step toward him. "What did SHE do?"

The sword was in my hand again. I swung it towards Michael as another name glowed white on my arm. I spun the sword faster as my father's eyes finally met my onw.

"She had to Fall! She was marked by Satan herself. Raphael knows. The Council agreed. She had to Fall."

I looked down at the glowing name I thought would never appear on my body: Lucifer.

KAYLEE'S POV

"Michael!" My voice sounded hoarse even to my own ears. "The mark will fade!" I tried to fight what the Council so hopelessly believed.

"We cannot take that chance." Uriel and Michael each grabbed one of my arms. My own father couldn't look me in the eyes as they lead me to where Lucifer had fallen all those years ago.

They had no sympathy, showed no emotion as they pushed me over the edge. We had all heard the stories about the Fall, but experiencing it was another thing entirely. I tipped backwards as my wings shot out, trying to catch me. It was too late though, and I careened over the edge, my arms cradling my belly. The last thing I saw as I spiraled down were my father's eyes.

My wings snapped back into my back. My skin felt like it was tearing off in thick strips. Then the worst pain ripped through my body. My stomach jutted forward, and blood began to soak it. I watched, unable to move, as my baby was ripped through my body.

It was a boy. Horror drenched me as I watched my son fall away from me. A name shot through my head, the only thing I could possibly provide him. He would have been Aleksander. That was my last thought as blackness covered me.

MATTHEW'S POV

Pain burned through my skin again as yet another name glowed white and then faded to black. This one hurt more than the others, more even than my love's had.

"I had a son," I said quietly. "You killed my love and my son, Michael. Whatever relationship we once had as father and son is over."

Turning on my heel, I left. Michael was dead to me. The entire Council was dead to me. If they would force a good angel to Fall, who knew what else they would do? The Council was just as evil as Satan herself.

Somehow, some way, I would find a way to avenge my love and my son. No one had ever dared anger the angel of death because of my mother. Now, they had done just that.
