From Mountains to Lone Stars

Here We Go Again

Soccer season was upon us. Normally, I wasn't a soccer guy, but Maverick had roped me into playing with the men and co-ed teams. She was an amazing sales woman since I hadn't played soccer since I was a little kid. Instead of telling me to not play, she insisted I join in. Our men's team was actually pretty good, and me being on the field didn't impede that, but on the co-ed team, I refused to play.

Tonight was a women's game, and the residents had invited me out, insisting that I had to see how well they played but also how well Maverick played. Apparently, she was a crazy player and a dominant person on the field. I was excited and hoped seeing that side of her would finally make my heart stop doing that weird thing every time I saw her.

"Welcome to the best game you'll see, Matt!" Maverick smiled at me. "We're playing some true competitors tonight. They beat us last year."

My heart did that weird thing when I saw her in her soccer shorts and wearing a tank top. "Well, good luck. Everyone said I had to come see you play."

She shot me a smirk. "Just you wait."
*************************************************************************************************************
My heart was pumping as if I was playing in the game. Our women's team was freaking insane! They were doing all sorts of moves and jukes and scoring point after point. Not to mention, our goalie was one of the best I had seen. She was like the next Hope Solo.

But my favorite part of this game was watching Maverick. She was a tiny thing, but she played defense. Mav was fast too! She could get the ball away from the offender and take it up the field to a forward and get a goal in no time. I was watching her and just couldn't keep my excitement in.

Not to mention that Mav could also lead from the field. She was switching people in and out and fixing positions like I had never seen. My throat was hoarse from cheering them on so much, and the game was still very close.

The girls needed one more point to win and they had five minutes left. I was hoping and praying that they would win because they were so fun to watch and seeing them in play-offs would be like watching a Slayer concert.

"LET'S GO BRUCE!" I yelled, cupping my hands around my mouth to make my cry even louder.

Maverick booted the ball up the field and right to one of her forwards. The forward lost the ball to a mid-fielder and then it was a back and forth until Maverick got the ball again. I watched as she took off down the field. She juked around the defenders and for the first time, I watched her take a shot. She was at the sixteen yard line and the ball sailed perfectly over the head of the goalie.

"YEAH! GO MAVERICK!" Time was called and the girls won!

The girls ran to each other and hugged. They high fived the other team and then thanked the refs. Mav lead them back to the sidelines and motioned for them to sit down so she could talk to them.

"That was a great game, ladies. I love seeing how much we improve every time we play. Julia, you had the most goals tonight! Cameron and Kristen as always, you guys do a great job of teamwork. Amber, your defense was insane tonight and that assist early in the second half got us back on our feet. And of course, Jackie, you are an amazing goalie! Our next game is on Wednesday. Let me know in advance if you can't make it," Maverick said and then had the girls huddle up.

As one, the girls yelled: "BRUCE HALL, BEST HALL. BRUCE HALL, BEST HALL. BRUCE HALL, BEST HALL. OH LAY DO IT!"

"Maverick, you are a great player," I said as she sat down to take her cleats off.

She sent me a bright smile and my heart did that weird thing again. "Oh, thanks, Sanders."

I needed to talk to the guys about why my heart was doing this. She shouldn't have this affect on me; I was her boss. What the hell was happening to me?

Notes

Update, update, update.

My birthday (Nov 8) was more of a fizzle than a bang so I might as well write some fanfiction to make up for it.

The part where Mav left. And I’m up to date now! Ready to see if this sign from Mav is going anywhere...

Well hey... what part did you just read?

Oh yeah, Imma take a page outta your book, woman. FIGHT ME! COME ON! LET’S GO! I’m a blubbering fucking mess! How could you do this to me, Heri?! I’m under my blanket and I’m not coming out. Ever. Don’t talk to me. Or look at me. Or think about me. Or breathe my air!

Take that as a compliment ;)
