From Mountains to Lone Stars

Let the RA Life Begin

We were a week into actual school, and my residents were settling in nicely. They had even begun to get used to Matt being in the hallway. Though we all did stare at the attractive man, it was becoming less of a rubber-necking routine.

As for my classes? Well, they were fun. I actually enjoyed what I was taking except for this journalism game design class I was in. I thought that was weird and had nothing to do with what I wanted to do. Why did I have to take it? UNT was weird about what classes were required for certain programs.

"Maverick, dial in to our one-on-one, please," Matt said.

I smiled at him, letting him know I was still there. We had just started our one-on-one. A one-on-one is basically a once a week thing with one of the two hall directors. Mine happened to be with Matt. It was used to check in on work, school, and life and to ask questions or to talk about issues. The only time we saw the other hall director was during our mid-semester and end of semester evaluations.

"I'm paying attention, Sanders."

Matt narrowed his eyes. I don't think he liked that I called him by his last name. "Maverick, don't call me Sanders. You aren't my basketball coach. How's the first week of school been, work, life?"

"School is good. I like four of my five classes. Work is going good. I have all of my residents' names memorized and they are all a hoot! We are going to do our first program this Friday. And before you ask, it's going to be a girl's night in," I said and leaned forward in my chair. Programming was my favorite part of my job. "So we'll be talking about life and painting our nails and making lotions. And life is okay. I have to go to physical therapy twice a week, and that's awful."

Matt nodded his head. So far, he was a good hall director. I still missed my old one, but Matt was better in some ways. He actually engaged in your one-on-ones instead of pushing them off to the last possible minute.

"That's good. I'm sorry to hear about the PT." Matt stood up and stretched. "So, we have twenty minutes left in this thing... what do you want to do?"

I tapped my chin, thinking about it. "Do we have to get supplies for the program?"

"Yes, we do. I'll drive."
*********************************************************************************************************
Matt cringed as I sprayed another perfume on him. I was easily distracted, that was for sure. While we were supposed to be here looking for lotion ingredients and nail polish, I had gotten distracted by the glittery perfume bottles.

"Mav, stop it," Matt said on a laugh. He gently took the bottle from my hands and set it back down. "We have to get back to the hall soon."

Pouting, I turned to go to the ingredients. Sanders followed me slowly, clearly uncomfortable being in Sephora. I don't know why this was the choice I went to for lotion making stuff, but I knew we could probably get good scents here.

A young woman smiled at me. "You and your boyfriend are super cute."

My face flushed. Did she really think Matt and I were dating. "We... we aren't... he's not..." I couldn't finish a sentence.

"We're not dating is what she's trying to say," Matt jumped into the conversation. The girl nodded and walked away, probably as embarrassed as I was.

"You had trouble getting that out, Maverick."

"Just surprised she thought we were dating, that's all."

Matt quirked an eyebrow at me. "And why is that?"

I didn't want to answer him. Looking down at my feet, I moved away from my very handsome boss. He didn't know me well enough to know about my life. So I ignored his question and moved on. I could only hope Matt got the hint.
