From Mountains to Lone Stars

Bonding with Mrs. Stewart

Today, Maverick was going to the hospital for her surgery. She said she wanted me there with her because her mom was going to be a nervous wreck. From what Mav told me, while the two loved each other, they didn't always get along, especially where her health was concerned.

"Maverick," I said, peeking my head into her room. "Are you ready? Your mom's here."

She turned to face me, her eyes wide with fear. "Yes. You're still coming, right?" She walked out of the door with a bag in her hands. I could sense her nervousness from here.

"Of course." I grabbed the bag from her and quickly pressed a kiss to her lips. Mav smiled up at me and followed me out the door.

We walked to the front desk together and collected her mom. They had asked that I drive since I had a special parking pass. I had happily agreed. Anything that would make this easier on Alexis, I was all for.

"It's going to be okay," Mav's mom said.

Mav rolled her eyes and nodded her head. I could tell how much she wanted to say something but bit her tongue. The tension between the two of them was ridiculous.

Mrs. Stewart sat down next to me, holding her purse tightly between her hands. Though she had been brave around her daughter, she was now just as scared as Maverick had been. I carefully placed an arm around her and gave her an awkward hug.

"Are you afraid, Mrs. Stewart?"

She looked at me and for the first time, I realized how much the two looked alike. Maverick had her mother's eyes. "Of course I am, Matt. My daughter might not be okay after this. Now, we don't always get along, but I love her very much."

She sniffed and I gave her another tight hug. "I hate the phrase 'it'll be okay' because there is no guarantee, but everything will work out. Mav is the toughest person I have ever met, so there's no doubt in my mind that she'll be okay."

"What exactly is the relationship between you two?"

I felt a blush creep up my cheeks. "Strictly platonic and work."

"Honey, I'm her mother. She acts different around you than she would a coworker," Mrs. Stewart said and shot me a look only a mother could.

"I like her... which I'm not allowed to do. We can't have a relationship, Mrs. Stewart. No matter how much either one of us wants it."
