Cold State Line

Climax

So much of me was surprised that Judge Anderson was putting this in motion. So much more of me was surprised that the police, the judges, and the hospital staff agreed to this. Wait, had they? I had been so distracted by the absurd plan that I didn't ask my burning question.

"Wait, Anderson, the police and the courts and the hospital staff are just going to let us do this?" I asked, sitting up in bed.

Judge Anderson stroked his chin. "The police and hospital staff are behind it. They all saw what Clay did to Haylee. Truth be told, I was never shown the evidence and as a judge, I am so sorry that I let evidence just disappear. As a father, I am so sorry I let that monster of a child sway me to believe you were crazy."

Haylee frowned at him. "I'm not going to forgive you. I will go along with this plan though."

Judge Anderson nodded. "I'll see you all in twenty minutes."

Haylee watched him leave and then turned to me and Alvin. I could see so many emotions flicking through her eyes. She wanted to say so much, but I could tell that there was one thing that was about to dominant her mind.

"Do we really trust and believe this will work?"

I sighed. "I don't know, but I would rather try than let the justice system work things out. Alvin, what do you think?"

"It's a hard call," he said and looked between the two of us. "On one hand, this case could drag on forever. On the other hand, if the judge is playing us, you are screwed for life. Haylee, it's up to you because it's you at stake."

"Can you give us a minute?" She smiled as Alvin left the room.

"I think you should go for it, babe. If the judge is fucking with us, I recorded what he said. He'll get in just as much trouble as you. If the judge isn't fucking with us, Clay goes away forever. But it's ultimately your choice, Haylee."

Her blue eyes watched me. I could see so much happening behind them. "I'm going to do it."

NO POV

Haylee walked down the hall, getting closer and closer to Clay's room. As she neared his room, Judge Anderson passed by, handing her something. The object was too small to determine what exactly it was.

Smiling, Haylee nodded at the two police officers guarding Clay's door. They had both been there when Clay had abused her. They had seen her bruised, bloodied, and broken. Of everyone on the police force, they knew what Clay had done to her the most. They wanted him dead just as much as Haylee did.

They turned the other way as she walked through the door. Clay's head snapped in her direction. There was nothing but pure evil in his eyes. He looked ready to kill but he couldn't strapped to the IV machine and handcuffed to the bed.

"It should be you here," he said, spitting in her direction.

Haylee just smiled, finally at peace with who Clay was. There was no hope for him. There was no way he would ever become a better person. There was no way that he would ever become better even with prison, even with a rehab program. There was no changing evil.

"No, Clay. The right person is finally in the hospital bed." She neared his bed, gripping the object Judge Anderson had given her.

"What are you doing, Haylee?"

She smiled at him. "Nothing." She took the syringe Anderson had handed her and put it under Clay's toenail. He looked at her and then it started to happen.

Haylee left quickly before the hospital staff could get there. The two police officers nodded and watched as she jogged down the hall. It was only when she disappeared that they went in and called the hospital staff.

By the time they arrived, it was too late. Clay was pronounced dead of an aneurysm at 6:50 PM.

Notes

And just like that..... no more Clay.
