Lost ... For Love and Phone

They are perfect for each other

“Izzie, what is going on?” Mia looked at her friend with a compelling stare. She noticed Izzie being absent. Replying to her texts with a max of three words and hardly ever within the hour. When she asked her about it Izzie told her she was busy at work, but Mia knew better. She forced Izzie to be there for a Skype call. The face looking back at her confirmed all her suspicions. Her friend was heartbroken.

Izzie shrugged in reply to her previous question and then asked the question back, trying to get the attention off her. Mia wasn’t buying it though. “What did Matt do?” She asked, a concerned tone in thick in her voice. Izzie’s head shot up and Mia knew she hit the jackpot.

When Izzie finally said something it wasn’t quite what Mia expected. “He didn’t do anything” Izzie replied stubbornly.
“Then why are you at home, heartbroken and not sickenly happy with Matt?”

At first Izzie didn’t reply and when she finally did, her voice was soft and barely audible.

“It’s the last weekend of the European tour. He is flying back home on Tuesday. This fling has gone on long enough. It was useless to spend that last weekend together. Better get used to being alone again.”

“Did he say that?!” Mia was still convinced Matt had done something to hurt her friend “What an ass! Leading you on! Calling you his girlfriend! Flying you in at every possibility! How dare he treat you like a very expensive one night stand! That asshole!!” Mia completely forgot her normally so composed nature, but quickly went back to caring mode “Just take a train and come here for a few days, we will take care of you”.

“It wasn’t his decision, Mia, it was mine”
“… Oh…”
“It’s no use, Mia. What do I get from spending more incredible days with him? These 2 months have been amazing. Better end it on a high note”
“Doesn’t look like one, honey” Mia replied with worry in her voice “Didn’t you guys talk about the future? You two have been inseparable”
“We talked about it for a bit. But Matt always said we would figure it out. I just see no way out. It’s over” Izzie was working hard to wipe away her tears without Mia noticing, but she wasn’t fooled.
“Have you told him? That it’s over?”

Izzie shook her head “I think he will get it. I haven’t talked to him since I left France”
“Izzie, that is not fair to him”
“Yeah, well, him making me fall in love with him with no way of ever being together wasn’t fair either” Izzie replied quietly “I gotta go. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine. Just give me some time”

With that Izzie ended the call, leaving a highly confused and worried Mia. She paced the house trying to solve all of this. There had to be a way to fix this for her friend. There had to be.

After an hour of pacing and thinking, she realized she had Matt’s number. Izzie gave it to her in case of an emergency and in Mia’s opinion, this classified as one. She didn’t know what she was going to say, when she pressed the call-button, but she would just have to wing it.

“Hello?”

When the call was answered, Mia immediately realized it wasn’t Matt on the phone.

“Brian, hey, it’s Mia, Izzie’s friend”
“Oh. She is not talking herself, but she lets you call? Classy. Just tell her to stick it somewhere dark, because I’m letting you talk to Matt on her behalf. She needs to be a big girl and tell him herself if he was just a way for her to fuck someone famous!”
“HEY! That’s not what this is!” Mia replied angrily “And don’t you ever talk about my friend like that again!” Mia had to remind herself she was calling for a very good reason AND that she couldn’t possibly execute any of the horrible ways she was thinking of to kill her favorite guitarist.

“I’ll talk about her any way I fucking want. Matt is a mess and it’s her fault. I do as I please. If she wanted it differently she should have called herself. I would tell all of this again to her backstabbing ears” The venom was dripping from his voice.
“HEY!!! I TOLD YOU TO STOP IT!!” Mia was also fuming by now, but she had to calm down to fix this. She took a deep breath. “Listen, Brian, apparently both our friends are miserable. That seems kinda useless”
“Well, that’s her own fucking fault. Don’t ask me to feel sorry for her”
“Would you please just listen to me before casting judgement?” Mia grew impatient with the man she had idolized for so many years.
“You have 2 minutes”

A deep sigh escaped Mia, but she started talking anyway.
“I talked to Izzie, she is isolating herself from the world, sitting at home being heartbroken” Mia let silence fall, but quickly continued before she could feel guilty for telling Brian all this “She thinks this is best, because you guys are going back. She doesn’t see any way this could work. So she’s trying to protect herself from getting even more hurt”
“That’s just ridiculous” Brian sighed “Now we have to listen to him blaming Izzie she made him fall in love with her”
Mia chuckled “They are perfect for each other”.

She could almost see the confusion on Brian’s face, but when she wanted to explain they got interrupted.
“Why are you answering my phone? Is that Izzie?” Mia could hear the desperation in Matt’s voice. She was sad she would have to disappoint him in a minute. But it didn’t come that far.
“No man, it’s that groupie I gave your number…”
“YOU DID WHAT?!”
“Yes, I realize it was stupid now too. Doesn’t mean I shouldn’t put her to good use.”
“You’re married, Brian, I thought you stopped doing that”
“Yeah, well, maybe I want to get started again”

Mia shook her head at the conversation on the other end and she had no idea what Brian was trying to gain with this. And then… The connection was broken. She stared at her silent phone. She started to think this had been a bad idea and she had no idea what to do next. Then her phone rang again, a different number than she had dialed earlier, but again, American.

“It’s Brian. I had to get Matt off my back.”
“So you have no morals, huh?” she replied smartly.
“Do you want my help or not?” he shot back impatiently.

Brian took the silence as a yes and told her the plan he made up in the meantime. He wasn’t sure how it would all work out, but they had to try. Mia on her end started arranging the minute they ended the conversation.

That’s how Izzie found herself being picked up by her brother the next day. She wasn’t allowed to ask any questions and the only thing he let go all drive was that it would cheer her up.

Izzie was in no condition to protest, but when they pulled up at a German airport where Mia was waiting for her, she started to resist.
“No. No. I know what you are up to and I’m not doing it.”
She folded her arms over her chest angrily and stared out of the window in any direction but where Mia and her brother were.

“Listen to me” He grabbed her shoulders and turned her to him “You and Mia are going to fly to Dublin”
Izzie shook her head, knowing damn well that was exactly the city where Matt was “But..”
“No buts, you are gonna fly there and you two are going to have a fun weekend. If you decide to go talk to Matt, you can, if not... You just have a nice weekend with your friend.”
“No funny surprises?”
“No funny surprises” her brother confirmed. In his mind he was justifying his lie, he knew she would thank him later.

The first night the girls went out and got really drunk. Izzie told her friend everything and explained why her and Matt could never be together. All the reasons Izzie found only strengthened Mia in her plan. She would make all of this work out. She would make her friend happy again.

During the next day Mia notice Izzie getting more and more restless. Shad had to be thinking about that man that was about to go on stage tonight. Maybe they wouldn’t need the big plan anyway. Maybe things would just fall into the right place.

After a long silence during dinner Izzie softly spoke “Do you want to go to the concert? It doesn’t seem fair I’ve seen them so many times now and I’ve been keeping it from you.”
“Damn right you have to feel bad about that” Mia chuckled, before continuing in a more serious matter “I always want to go. You know that. But only if you are comfortable with it.” Mia smiled like it really didn’t matter to her, but she was silently doing a quick prayer, hoping Izzie would make the right decision to make this plan work.
Izzie fidgeted with her hands, then nodded slightly.
“Okay. But we are standing in the back. Staying away from crew and especially band. I’m not going to talk to him. You have to promise me, Mia.”
“I promise” Mia replied, crossing her fingers behind her back.

The minute Izzie went to the bathroom, Mia texted Brian. He replied immediately, telling her he would take care of getting them backstage. Guilt was creeping into Mia’s brain, but she pushed it away. It was the right thing to do. It would be for the best. Izzie would definitely thank her later.

As Izzie requested they stood in the back of the venue. Avoiding all crew they found a hidden spot in the shadows. When the band came on stage Mia noticed the silent tears running over her friend’s face. She realized with pain in her heart that Izzie must be saying goodbye. “Iz, you need to talk to him” she tried one last time, but Izzie only shook her head.

Mia noticed the movement behind Izzie and she really hoped her friend would forgive her for what she was about to do.
“Well tough luck. I’m not letting you walk away from the best thing that’s ever happened to you. You are not allowed to let go that easily.”
Izzie’s eyes met Mia’s in confusion and then she was lifted of her feet and thrown over a strong Berry brother shoulder. He shook Mia’s hand “Jason, nice to meet you. Come with me”
Izzie looked at her from her upside down position and only spoke 6 cold words “I’m never forgiving you for this” Mia kept her mouth shut, hoping she would change her mind about that.

“Good. You can see the concert from here” Jason put Izzie down and then stood behind her, his arms crossed over his chest. He spoke into the little mic that was hanging from his shirt. “We’ve got her, make sure Shads doesn’t get off the stage on this side until the show is done. He will never go back when he sees her.”
Mia noticed Brian giving a small nod as he looked to their side shortly. Apparently, he was the only one that got the message dispatched to his in-ears.

Izzie was trying to control the emotions raging through her body. She couldn’t believe two of the most important persons in her life lied to her like that. She was never going to forgive Mia or her brother. And if that wasn’t enough emotion, there was the man. The man she swore never to come near again. Only a few feet away from her. Only seeing him made her feel 10.000 things at once, and she couldn’t decide which emotion she should let have the tophand.

So she listened to his voice. The voice that sang to her privately, whispered sweet nothings, the voice that breathed her name when they were in bed together. She clenched her fists and closed her eyes tightly. She couldn’t think about him like that. This wasn’t the plan, but now she was here she could tell him goodbye. It was for the best.

The concert slowly went to the end. Izzie didn’t talk to anyone. Not to Jason, who was joking about her being his exercise of the day. Not to any of the crew that came to say ‘hi’. Not to Mia who was apologizing. She couldn’t. There was something she had to do and she needed everything in her to collect her thoughts and courage.

When the bad finally came off stage, Brian found them first.
“Are you going to make me regret bringing you here? You breaking his heart?”
Izzie got nervous under his pressing stare, but she couldn’t lie
“I might”

In the meantime the rest of the band had surrounded her except for Matt. He was the last to come to off stage “What the hell was that? Why did you fly off the stage? I’m the only fucking one taking responsibilities here”

The people surrounding Izzie parted like the red sea, revealing her to him.
“IZ! Are you okay? I’ve been trying to call you for days!” He rushed over to her, checking her for any hurt or pain. How could he know her hurt wasn’t noticeable from the outside?

“Iz?” She couldn’t look at him. Not really. Trying to avoid his eyes, Izzie looked down, to the side. Anywhere but at him. After a very uncomfortable silence, everyone could see the realization hit in Matt’s face and they all discretely turned away.

“You were avoiding me on purpose weren’t you? You were never planning to call me again. You would just leave me wondering” His voice got louder and more angry “You were dumping me!” he pointed at her “But you didn’t even have the guts to tell it to my face!”

He turned away from her, letting his hands run over his face “How the hell could I have been this stupid?” He muttered, barely loud enough to be heard “You were just another groupie looking for an adventure with a rockstar.” He sighed, his shoulders hanging down “Damn, did you fool me”

Matt walked away, not even giving a glance back at the woman he thought he had something special with. Izzie just stood there, not saying a word, watching him walk away. Doing nothing to stop the tears from streaming down.

“See, I knew this was all a big scam. Told you she would be a bitch! Get her out of my face” Brian hissed at Mia. “I fucking told you not to talk about her like that!!” Mia charged at Brian. She came to a sudden halt when Zack grabbed her around the waist, smirking at her “Aren’t you a little spitfire! Let’s not fight okay?”

Brian shot her another dirty look, but Mia didn’t see. She stood in front of her friend, forcing her to look at her “Izzie, you don’t want this. Go after him. You guys can make it work. Don’t be stupid.” She continued with more, but Izzie just looked right through her, not hearing a word she said. It was over. This was what she had wanted all along, right? Then why did it feel like her heart was ripped out of her chest?

“IZZIE!!! Don’t be fucking stupid!! You love him!” It was like Izzie finally heard her friend and she looked at her with wide eyes. How did Mia know? She didn’t tell anyone. It was too soon, she couldn’t. It just wasn’t possible. Mia grabbed her shoulders “Iz, come on, you deserve to be happy”
Izzie shook her head “It’s too late, Mia, I made my bed, now I have to lie in it”
Mia pulled her friend into a short hug, but then pushed her away. ‘It’s not too late. Go after him. Tell him how you feel. Fight for him, for this. Come on, you can do better than this” Mia saw she wasn’t convinced, but she was getting there. She quickly dialed the number of the one person she knew could push Izzie over the edge.

“I need your help, you need to talk some sense into your sister. Matt just walked away from her and she is doing nothing!” she quickly said when the phone was answered.
“Okay, hand her the phone”

Izzie regretted taking it the minute her brother started to talk.
“What the fuck are you doing?”
“I don’t have to listen to this, goodbye”
“Don’t you fucking hang up on me. You have to listen to me carefully. You came there for a reason, you couldn’t stay away from him. You didn’t have to go. But you did. That means something, Izzie.”
“I don’t know what to do” she started crying again.
“I do.” Izzie could hear the smile in her brother’s voice and she wished he was there with her. She always felt like the younger one in situations like this, even though she had several years on him.
“You listening?” She nodded, even though he couldn’t see her “you are going to go after him and you are going to tell him how you feel. Insecurities and all. But especially that one thing you know for sure. Don’t take no for an answer. Be that annoying woman that never lets go. The one you always were when we grew up.” He chuckled and Izzie couldn’t help but let out a small smile of her own.

“Iz, you are a catch. He would be crazy if he doesn’t accept what you have to say. He has been flying you all over Europe the past 2 months, he has feelings too. Go on. Be that great person that I’m proud to call my sister. Kick some ass. I love you.”
“I love you too” with that Izzie ended the call. She handed the phone to Mia. “Will you be okay by yourself?”
“We will take her out, introduce her to Avenged partying” Zack smiled widely, putting his arm over Mia’s shoulder. Mia smiled widely and Izzie pushed the ping of worry aside. She knew what partying Avenged style meant and it wasn’t always a good thing.

“Which hotel are you guys? What’s Matt’s room number?” she looked around the group. She met Brian’s stubborn face first, okay, she didn’t have to expect anything from him. “Johnny? Zack? Brooks?”
Still silence.
“Come the fuck on! NOW you are turning against me?” Still serious faces.
“UGH! I will find out myself! Assholes!” She was ready to storm out. Laughter broke on the 3 faces “Of course not. We just wanted to see if you would fight. Because honey, you will need it.” Brooks gave her quick hug before he pushed her towards the door “Take the car that is outside. The driver will take you to the hotel. He is in room 1205.”

That ending was beautiful, really. And I loved all the tiny details, especially the verbal fists swinging lol. It’s hard coping up with writers block, but I’m so proud of you!
