It's Just Business

Three - Curiosity Killed the Cat

Annalise

I was on break whenever a black charger pulled into the parking lot. It was an nice car, but something that anyone could afford. Watching as the car door opened, I looked over. Seeing a man step out, I raised an eyebrow. He was handsome. He had short brown hair, it looked like he just got it buzzed off, hazel eyes, and he was well muscled. He was dressed in a sharp black suit with a vivid red shirt on underneath.

He wasted no time in rushing into the building and out of my line of sight. One thing that I had noticed immediately whenever I started today, was that all the employees were women. All of them except the security guards. With the way that he was dressed, I knew instantly who he was. He was the infamous Mr. Sanders.

I knew that I had to know more about this man. Who he was and why I had to stay away from him.

I got up from the table and walked back to the building. I walked through the first set of doors and just as I opened the second set, a man came flying through them. He shoved me out of his way, causing me to spill my coffee all over my new dress. I could feel the anger boil up inside of me.

“Watch where the fuck you’re going!” I yelled as he ran out the doors. He seemed upset or angry, I couldn’t tell, but I knew I was pissed. I may not have liked dresses, but the amount of money that I spent on them, I was pissed that he ruined one of them.

I rushed to the ladies’ room, knowing that I was going to be late, coming back from break because of this. I quickly walked in and grabbed some paper towels, dabbing at the coffee, trying to get as much of it out as I could. Nothing like having a green dress be ruined by brown coffee. Sighing out of frustration, I stormed out of the bathroom and went back to my office before sitting down at my desk. I quickly began to work before deciding that I was going to do a little bit of research on Mr. Sanders.

I hadn’t even been searching for five minutes before I was intensely looking through old files and pictures. I had found a couple of him drunk in a bar with what looked like his close friends. I also found an article talking about how he managed to rise from the very bottom up to the top and being the owner of such a large company.

I decided that pictures and articles weren’t going to satisfy my curiosity of who this man was. I quickly printed out what I had found and stuffed it into my desk. If I wanted to know more about him, I was going to have to meet him or I was going to have to ask questions.
I stood up from my desk and walked out to the receptionist desk. I leaned on it, looking at Val as I waited for her to end the phone call. She looked up at me, a pen in her hand as she held a finger up to me, telling me to wait.

“Would you like to make an appointment?” she asked the person on the phone. I could hear shouting, and I saw her cringe slightly. “I’m sorry but Mr. Sanders does not take walk ins. If you wish to see him face to face, you will have to make an appointment.” She said in the nicest tone she could muster up. I heard a desperate sounding tone come over the phone and I let out a sigh of annoyance. “Please hold,” she told them. She quickly put them on hold and pressed another button. “Michelle, there is a couple on the line that needs to make an appointment with Mr. Sanders,” she said, hanging up the phone to look at me.

“You said to come to you if I had any questions or concerns right Val?” I asked, looking into her brown eyes. She tucked some of her blonde hair behind her ear, looking up at me. “Of course, what do you need Annalise?” She said, giving me a small smile.

“I need to know more about Mr. Sanders. Why is it that my father told me to stay away from him, and that you told me he isn’t to be bothered?” I asked, tilting my head to the side. She let out an aggravated sigh. “Because, he is a very busy man. Most employees never meet him unless they have done something seriously wrong or unless they are getting promoted to his floor.” She said, looking at her computer screen before typing again.

I bit my lip lightly, wondering what I could do to meet this mysterious Mr. Sanders. “How does one get promoted to his floor?” I asked, tapping my fingers on the reception desk. “Through lots of hard work and by not asking questions.” She said. “Now is there anything else? We both have work to do, and we’re never going to get it done if you keep asking me questions about Mr. Sanders.”

I sighed and stormed back to my office, sitting down at my desk, I began to take care of the forms that I had to finish filling out, thoughts and questions filling my mind. I needed to know who this man was. Why I was supposed to leave him alone.

Looking at the clock, I sighed softly and opened a new internet browser to try and find out more about him. Valary was a dead end, I knew the security guards wouldn’t answer any questions I had. I didn’t know any of the other employees here, so I was just going to have to continue to dig.

I had no idea how long I had my nose buried in my computer, but I nearly jumped out of my skin whenever I heard my phone go off. I pulled it out of my purse to see that I had a message. I didn’t know who it was from. There was no number or name to go with it. I unlocked my phone and opened the message to see what it said.

Curiosity killed the cat

Curiosity killed the cat? Who would send that to someone. I bit my lip and looked around the building to see if anyone else was on their phone. The building was quiet, the only noise filling the air was the sound of keys tapping. Everyone was minding their own business.

Should I send something back? Maybe it was just a message sent to the wrong number. I locked my phone and set it back down for a moment. I stared at it before deciding that I was going to send a message back. It couldn’t hurt anything could it? Especially if they messaged the wrong number.

Satisfaction brought it back

I couldn’t help but hesitate a moment before sending the message. Watching as it went through, I locked my phone and set it down before going back to my research.

The more that I looked and followed links, the more I slowly began to find out about him.
He seemed like a nice guy, he donated money to cancer research, he helped restore historical building in Huntington Beach. He went to public events.

My phone went off again and I looked down to see that the numberless stranger had messaged me. Opening it, I stared at the message. My blood running cold.

Stop looking into things you shouldn’t be before you get yourself into something you can’t get yourself out of.

I stared at it for I don’t even know how long before finally deciding to message them back.

Threatening me will only make me look harder. Who is this?

I sent the message and stared at it, not long after, it got a reply.

Someone you don’t want to meet.

Someone that I didn’t want to meet. Who could that be. I chewed on the inside of my cheek, surprised that I didn’t chew a hole through it, I sighed softly before sending another message.

Mr. Sanders?

I sent the message and stared at my phone, waiting for a response. It fell asleep three times and about half an hour had passed.

Still no response.

Was this the infamous Mr. Sanders that I was talking to? If so, how did he get my number and why would he be threatening me?

@shortygirl
I didn't think anyone would see this update. Especially with how buggy the sight is. Even if i have just one reader who wants me to keep updating the story, that's enough for me!
