Confession of a King

eighteen

Things had been dead around the prison since Jimmy’s confession a couple weeks ago. I hadn’t turned him in for killing Adam when I found out. I was actually in total and complete shock for about a week. He wouldn’t give reasoning on why he did it, and when I approached Matt about it he wouldn’t give me any insight either. Unfortunately, since Mr. Morgan hadn’t gotten any information out of anyone on his interrogation list, he asked me to hand over every and all tape from my sessions over the past few weeks, causing Jimmy to fall into the lap of trouble. I felt horrible about it, because it was really my fault, but it wasn’t my issue anymore.

Everything was going really well between Matt and I, also. There hadn’t been anything strange or out of the ordinary happening. It seemed like maybe his rival forgot about our existence after he lost two of his team. Matt had his come-to-jesus moment on tape, and ever since had been talking to me in sessions like a little kid who just won a trophy. His head had gotten so wrapped up in finding a way to clear his name so he could get out, and I had to say, it was nice always having positive-Matt around. Mr. Morgan was even so impressed that he stopped requesting Matt’s tapes weekly as long as I sent him a detailed report. That was a relief. Sessions were good, sex was good, things were stress-free… it was like everything was falling into place.

Matt had also accepted that Zacky, Brian and I were meeting on a weekly basis for either dinner or drinks. Brian was now officially dating Chelsea, so I had no excuse but to be around him whenever I wanted to see her. Zacky, not trying to seem like a total freak, found that it would be best to just act as a friend rather than a watch-dog when the three of us would hang out. Chelsea knew about the relationship between Matt and I, and of course she embraced it and fantasized about it. We still hadn’t broken the news to her that Brian was involved in gang activity as well, but I knew she assumed so. I think she just didn’t want to actually ask the question.

I continued typing away on my laptop until I heard the sound of someone clear their throat. I pulled my focus off of my computer screen and saw a set of hazel eyes and brown eyes staring at me.

“Sorry, did you say something?” I smiled softly, knowing that they were both aware I had stopped listening to them.

Matt rolled his eyes as Brian snickered, “What are you doing?”

“None of your business,” I smirked. “Now, what did I miss?”

“None of your business. Go back to your typing,” Matt grumbled and turned his focus back to Brian.

I shrugged and went back to what I was doing. I had been e-mailing my mom back and forth throughout the day. She was planning a family reunion and I was trying to help her with it to take some of the stress of of her. I hadn’t explained to Matt that I was going to be taking a week off to go out of town for this yet, and honestly I was not ready for that conversation. I looked forward to getting away and seeing my family. It had been such a long time since I even saw my parents, let alone my brother and extended family. My mom’s e-mail popped up on my computer rather quickly, and she said that she found the perfect place and was going to send out an invitation for the rest of the family. A nice beach get away in New Jersey sounded like such a good time. My grandparents were from that area, so it would be easier on them. The beach house had eight bedrooms, some rooms with a few beds in them. She was renting out that one and another with five bedrooms. The date was for three weeks away from tomorrow.

“Cape May, New Jersey.” Matt’s voice sounded from beside me, startling me. “Five days?”

I held my hand up to my heart, “Jesus, Matt. You scared the shit out of me.” I looked up at his frown, “I helped my mom plan a family reunion. We literally just finalized the details ten minutes ago. I was going to tell you as soon as I asked for the week off.”

He sighed and smiled, taking his left hand and ruffling my hair, “Sounds like fun. That will be good for you.”

“You’re not mad?” I asked while raising an eyebrow at Brian, who also looked shocked at Matt’s answer.

Matt laughed, “Why would I be mad?”

“Do you feel okay?” I asked while standing up, grabbing his wrist with my left hand and placing my right hand on his forehead.

“You haven’t seen your family in almost a year, babe. You should go see them and actually get away for a little.”

“You are such a suck up, man,” Brian cackled in his chair and smirked when Matt and I turned to look at him. “Whipped.”

Matt wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me against him, smirking back at Brian. “Keep laughing, Gates, and you’ll be the next one I gut.”

“Matthew,” I scoffed and hit his chest.

He looked down at me with those pretty, hazel eyes and smiled at me, his dimples sinking into his cheeks. “Sorry, baby,” he kissed my lips lightly.

“Are you going to tell your family that you’re dating a convict?” Brian’s voice sounded, taking my focus off of Matt’s lips on mine. “I’m assuming they’re going to ask if you have a boyfriend.”

I frowned and looked up at Matt, then at the floor, then back up at Brian, “Luckily, my family has gotten so used to my constant no, I don’t have a boyfriend, answer that they probably won’t ask. Obviously I can’t tell them about Matt. Not while he’s in here.”

“Do you think they would like me?” Matt put his hand under my chin and made my eyes meet his. “That’s a no.”

“Shut up,” I rolled my eyes. “My brother would hate you, without a doubt… But my mom would probably think you’re attractive. As long as she never found out about your occupation.”

“Dad?” Brian asked and Matt shot him a look.

I placed my hand on Matt’s chest, “It’s fine. He’s never really been in the picture, and made sure to dip out once he no longer had to pay child support when I turned eighteen.”

“I’m sorry,” Brian frowned. “That’s tough.”

I shrugged then lightly laughed, “Don’t be. I’m not sorry.” I glanced over at the clock, “We ran five minutes over. Time’s up.”

“No,” Matt whined and pulled me to him, placing a kiss on my forehead.

“Whipped,” Brian chuckled. “Let’s go before they have to come in her and shackle you up, Shads.”

I stood on my tip toes and kissed Matt fairly passionately. He stumbled back, losing his footing, and his back hit the wall. When I pulled away he looked surprised and I smirked at him, “See you Wednesday, handsome.”

Billy came in and put the handcuffs on Matt, escorting him out of my office with Brian following in-toe. Brian muttered to me about meeting tomorrow for dinner, just the two of us, to talk about Matt’s trial and other business like that. I nodded and closed the door behind him, then sat down at my desk and typed up a quick faux-report of the day. We hadn’t tape recorder anything today since Brian was in here, and to be honest I hadn’t really listened to what those two were talking about for the first hour. I chugged the remainder of the iced tea I had bought at lunch, not wanting to take the cup home with me, and tossed it into my recycling bin. I grabbed my bag and threw it over my shoulder, put my phone in my pocket, then grabbed my sunglasses and keys and headed out the door.

I pushed the doors to the prison open, walking past the outdoor yards and groaning to myself when my stomach started to growl. It would be great if I was able to go a couple hours without having to eat a small meal, but lately I had just been so damn hungry. I ignored my stomach and just kept my focus forward, trying my best not to make eye contact with any of the inmates. I knew Matt would still be inside for another hour or so, so there was no one worth looking at or talking to on my way out. The sooner I could get to my car, the sooner I could get home and eat an entire box of spaghetti.

“Hey, lady,” a familiar accent sounded from the yard to my right. I kept walking and I heard someone running against the fence line. “Look at me, you bitch.”

I turned on my heel and faced the fence, my eyes hitting none other than Big G’s… one of my old patients who I wasn’t exactly bummed to not be working with anymore. I gave him a look to say “do you need something” without actually having to use my words.

“Truth be told, Shadows is fucking you well,” he smirked. “How’d you get Ace killed off?”

I pushed my sunglasses up on my nose, shielding my eyes from him as I rolled them. “I don’t have time for you, Alvarez,” I went to turn back toward the parking lot.

“Shadows dick still shoved up that tight ass, you can’t even speak? You working for Avenged now?” His smirk was still playing on his lips. “I’ve heard you’ve gotten close with Vengeance and Gates.”

“Like I said. I don’t have time for you,” I snapped and turned, picking up my pace toward my car.

“You’ll have time when you’re dead in a ditch with a bullet through your skull!”
