Who Are You?

Sidewinder

.:.:.

The day came and went in the blink of an eye. At some point during that time, Leana had come back home while Elise was sleeping only to leave a short time later for work. Elise spent the majority of the day studying her handbook and the restaurant menu while enjoying the silent apartment.

After seeing it was five in the evening, she finally took a break to reply to Matt’s text from early this morning and read an email from her sister.

“Ugh, don’t remind me about love. I haven’t even had time to think about dating anybody right now. If the right person comes along, I’m open to it. Right now, I’m just trying to juggle getting better with missing my sister. ( : Now, how’s YOUR quest for love, Missy?”

Elise’s thumbs hovered over the screen as she thought of her sister’s question. Sure, she missed having someone to connect deeply with and create memories, but she needed to focus on herself first. Unless it was like her sister said, “If the right person comes along, I’m open to it.”

Immediately she thought of Matt and what he said to Johnny last night. As much as she tried to deny any sort of thoughts or feelings towards him, Elise’s heart contradicted her logic. A part of her wanted to get to know him better on a personal level but something was causing her to resist. Perhaps it was his fluctuating mood and disinterest in her presence. Only time would tell, so, for now she would get to place where she could take pride in herself.

I’ll think of something to say later. Elise discarded the email draft and clicked on her messages instead and brought up Matt's chat.

Thanks. I feel like a stray dog that Leana invited into her loving home. Haha

A low sounding rumble in her stomach distracted Elise from continuing her packet. It had been a few hours since her basic breakfast of yogurt and granola bits which left her yearning for some real food. While trying to think of something cheap to eat, her phone vibrated with an incoming message.

Matt: Are you calling yourself a bitch? Cuz I didn’t want to say anything… :b

Elise couldn’t help but laugh at Matt’s wit. Clever asshole. Feeling bold, she decided to drop a subtle hint for this man.

Eh, I’ve been called worse. Especially when I’m hangry. Speaking of which, I need to find something to eat before I chew off my own arm.

Matt: I feel you. Just got done working out and I’m starving. Hopefully there’s some protein around this house. Any suggestions?

Elise’s mood fell a little. Maybe her text was too subtle.

You could always straight up ask him if he wants to grab something to eat with you. Her inner thoughts were taunting.

Of course, that would be too obvious and women work on the notion that men should just know. They should just know without anyone having to tell them.

Grilled chicken is always good but you can’t go wrong with the classic cheeseburger. Protein, calcium, and carbs. No pickles, of course. That’s just inhumane to one’s palate.

Elise sent the message and headed toward the bathroom. A quick shower before going out and picking up some food sounded great since having been stuck in the room all day.

.:.:.

The faucet turned off and Elise wrung the excess water from her long hair. She watched the blue-black hair dye drip onto the floor of the tub and she was already growing bored with the choice of color. While finishing her after shower routine, Elise heard Leana opening and closing the front door.

“Shit.” Elise mumbled to herself upon realizing she forgot to bring a change of clean clothes with her. It’s just another female, nothing she hasn’t seen before. She sighed loudly, reached for the doorknob, and stepped out. Elise looked to her left but didn’t see anyone in the living room, nor was Leana’s door opened. Confused, she shrugged her shoulders and turned towards her room.

“What the fuck!” Elise shouted as she tightened the grip on the towel around her body.

An embarrassed, but grinning, Matt covered his eyes as he held a brown paper bag in front of Elise’s face. He nervously laughed while the young woman fumed.

“Not my proudest moment,” Matt continued with a chuckle, “but definitely worth my while. Nice threads, Elise. Bed, Bath, and Beyond’s Summer line?” He questioned with a smirk while still hiding behind his hand.

The emotions were running rampant inside her head; anger, shock, embarrassment, grateful, etc. Matt peeked through his fingers to see a sunned Elise rubbing her hand over the top of her head.

“No peeping! Out, Matthew!” Elise moved to the side and pointed him out of her room.

Without a word, Matt exited the room and immediately heard the door shut behind him. He walked to the living room and plopped down in his favorite oversized chair while waiting for Elise. Not two minutes later, she sat herself on the couch.

Matt handed her a brown bag and a white Styrofoam cup, a coy smile breaking across Elise’s face.

“You’re a godsend!” Elise began peeling away the food wrapper and parted the meat from both bottom and top bun in search of any pickles.

“No pickles? Damn. I told them to put extra!” Matt stuck his tongue out at a smiling Elise.
She playfully flipped him off and took a bite then sipped her soda. Mmm strawberry! Elise was dancing happily inside her mind at his choice in soda.

“I hope it’s ok. I noticed you bought strawberry soda for the other night. I just assumed…”
Matt was rubbing the back of his neck as he looked towards the floor.

“It’s my favorite. Thank you so much. How much do I owe you?” She questioned before taking another bite.

“Absolutely nothing. I get a huge discount for being sexy.” Matt grinned before taking a bite of his own burger.

Elise rolled her eyes and swallowed. A mischievous look crept across her face, “If that’s the case, Brian must eat his food for free.”

A tinge of surprise and pain flashed in Matt’s eyes. A sinister look of his own quickly appeared. He tossed his head to look at her, “Must be why you’re so thick,” and bit off a huge piece of burger to keep from smirking.

Shocked and impressed, Elise stared at him. No words even attempted to spill from her mouth. This man was good. She sighed but wasn’t ready to be defeated. “Keep it up. I don’t need to eat any more of these burgers to sit on your face and suffocate you.”

A moment of silence tormented the woman as she realized what she had just said. A deep tinge of pink sprawled across her cheeks as a devilish look slowly crept across Matt’s face. It was too late; he had her beat.

“Would you like to test that theory?” Matt questioned lowly, his eyes never leaving hers.

The second his hazel eyes met her green ones, she instantly looked down at her lap as corrupt scenarios popped into her mind. Say something, dummy! You’ve never shied away from this type of banter before!

Just as Elise opened her mouth, the door flung open as a winded Leana rushed inside. Bags upon bags hung from her arms as she collapsed in the middle of the living room. Elise and Matt stared at the tiny woman as she regained her breath.

“See! I told you I could do it! 'Multiple bags-MacFadden' has done it again!” Lee stripped all the bags from her arms and punched the air in excitement. Gena stood in the doorway, hands on her hips.

“Just because you said you could, doesn’t mean you should!” Gena exclaimed.

Elise looked to Matt and smirked, “Exactly what she said.”

The singer chuckled at her reference to his comment. “I would if I could.” He winked at Elise before heading into the kitchen to dispose of the food wrappers.

A sitting Leana glanced at Gena then at the two. “I think we missed something?” Gena questioned only to have Elise wave them off with a chuckle.

Elise offered a hand to her roommate as she easily pulled woman from the floor. Turns out, the two had been shopping all day, finding thrift clothing, cloth materials, and accessories. As a side job, the ladies deemed themselves “amateur fashion designers.” The bags were torn into as Elise was being shown every single item. It felt like Christmas morning by how excited these two were. As much as she enjoyed the pure enthusiasm, Elise looked to Matt with eyes that screamed, “Help me!”

Right on cue, the man walked over and extended his arm. “Come with me if you want to live.” Matt’s impersonation of The Terminator was spot on. She couldn’t help but giggle as she grabbed his hand.

The fashionistas protested her departure but instantly became distracted by the next bag being emptied onto the floor. Matt motioned for her to follow him outside which she gladly obliged.

Woo! Go Matt for taking charge! Definitely worth the wait

That's definitely the best way to stop the teasing. I love that Matt was bold enough to cut the bullshit so to speak.
