Water and Salt

“Your prayers have been answered. She’s coming.”

Christmas Day, 10:27 PM – Mr. & Mrs. Collins’ place

Christmas has never been one of Gin’s favorite holidays. She used to spend it with her family when she was a kid, then Lena dropped out of school and moved out to live her life with Jimmy and her friends. For a while it was only the three of them, then Gin moved to college and didn’t even bother to come back. Instead, that year, she spent Christmas with Andrew and his family. It was the first Christmas together and oddly enough, she liked it. Kind of.

This year, however, Andrew’s family drove to Huntington Beach to celebrate Christmas. Gin tried to convince her parents and even Andrew that this was a bad idea, but nobody seemed to listened to her. Instead, they all seemed to be quite excited about this.

Gin is sipping her third glass of wine of the night, completely lost in thought. She overhears her father speaking to Walter Parsons, Andrew’s father, about what seems to be fishing. Robert Collins has always had a thing for fishing even though he really sucks at it, but nobody has the heart to tell him this. The whole family, in fact, silently agreed to never tell him how bad he is at fishing (and even at golfing) while he pretends he’s this experienced fisherman.

A smile appears on Gin’s lips, but it quickly disappears as soon as she hears her fiancé and their mothers speak about her wedding.

“So, have you guys decided a date yet?” Lauren Parsons asks to her son and the girl.

Andrew is the one who answers. He’s always the one who answers – when they’re with friends, with their families or even with strangers. “I think we’re both on the same page when it comes to this. We thought about Spring, maybe May.”

“MAY?!” Both the older women yell and for a moment, the two men stop talking, looking at their wives, confused. Lauren quickly kisses her husband’s cheeks, to show him there’s nothing to worry about. The two older men start speaking again, with Lauren and Sandra looking at their children with wide eyes.

“What do you mean May?” Sandra asks. “It’s only five months away!”

Gin smiles softly at her mother. She knew she would react like that. “It’s enough, mom. Besides, we don’t want a big wedding so there isn’t much we need to do. We have plenty of time.”

“So… You want a small wedding?” A sigh escaped Mrs. Collins’ mouth. “Please, just don’t do some bland wedding like your sister’s.”

“Lena’s wedding was great, mom.”

Sandra rolls her eyes at those words and Gin isn’t exactly surprised. Lena’s wedding happened all of a sudden. One day they received the announcement for her wedding which would take place a month later. Needless to say, Sandra was desperate. Gin, on the contrary, was pretty excited and when the wedding finally took place in a farm in Tennessee, she swore herself she would have a small wedding as well. She isn’t made for big things.

“I–” Lauren clears her throat, probably trying to find words. “I think the guys can do it. I mean, we can help them pick everything and organize everything.”

“That would be wonderful, mom.” Andrew says. “Virginia is always busy with work so I’m sure she could use some help.”

No, I don’t need help
. Instead of speaking her mind, Gin simply smiles at everyone. This is the reason why she didn’t want to attend this stupid Christmas dinner. She knew her mother would end up speaking about the wedding and even if she’s okay with the wedding, Gin hoped she would still have some time to think about everything.

“Of course, I’d like to. Although I’m pretty sure I’ve already chosen the dress.”

“Oh, honey. No need to pick a dress. You already have a wedding dress! Mine!”

Gin is staring at her mother and again, she simply nods. Of course her mother wants to have a big role in her wedding; she didn’t get the chance to do anything for Lena’s wedding (not that she wanted to) and Gin is her special baby, the only child who could make her proud.

“Of course.”

“I’m sure you’ll look beautiful, babe.” Andrew whispers before softly pecking Gin’s lips. She looks at him and smiled, more genuinely this time. It’s not that she doesn’t love him, because she does; he’s great, smart, handsome and kind. His only problem is that it’s not him.

The ringing of her phone distracts her from her thoughts and Gin gets up. “Excuse me, I’ll be right back.” She says as she picks up her phone. She quickly glances at the screen before answering and a small smile appears on her lips.

“Yo, fine ass!”

“Hi, Brian.”

Gin heads to the kitchen so she can speak without worrying about the fact that maybe someone could hear her. To be honest, there is no reason why she should hide to make a phone call, but anything about Lena’s past life, even her old friends, aren’t exactly welcomed in her parents’ house.

“Merry fucking Christmas!”

Gin laughs. “Are you drunk? Merry Christmas to you.”

“Nah, I didn’t drink much.”

“Lying on Christmas Day isn’t good, Gates!” Gin can’t exactly recognize the voice from the other end, but she guesses it has to be one of the guys.

“Sorry, Shadows’ a dick.”

Gin smiles and leans back against the counter of the kitchen, her arms crossed over her chest. “I’m surprised you called me.” She really is. She hasn’t heard from the guys since the barbecue, but that’s okay because hearing from them meant eventually meeting them and meeting them meant seeing him.

“Eh, I’m sorry I didn’t call you earlier but I was busy.”

“I see. Well, thank you for the phone call, Brian.”

“Actually, I wanted to ask you something.” Gin raises her eyebrows at his words. “Wanna come to a New Year’s Eve party?”

“I’d like to, but Andrew and I decided to do something together and–”

“Oh c’mon, fine ass. You can bring him, if you want. There’ll be food, alcohol and games. It’ll be fuuuun.”

Gin smiles at his words, he seems very excited about this party and she feels bad for saying no. She and Andrew agreed to spend New Year’s Eve together, as always, but they thought about spending it at home with some wine and a good movie.

“Okay. Fine. We’ll be there.”

“YES!” Brian yells before speaking to someone else. “She’s coming!”

Gin laughs at his words. “Just text me time and address.”

“Awesome. I will. Have a nice Christmas, Gin.”

“You too, Brian.”

Gin hangs up just a few seconds before her fiancé walks into the kitchen.

“Who was it?” He asks, wrapping her arms around her.

“Remember that old friend I met a few weeks ago and that I saw again at that barbecue with my family last week?” He nods. “He invited us to his New Year’s Eve party. I said yes.”

“What about our plans?” He raises an eyebrow, or at least, he tries to. It reminds her of Brian, expect that Brian is incredibly good at raising one single eyebrow whole Andrew isn’t that good.

“We didn’t exactly have plans for New Year’s Eve. So, you in?”

“I’m in.”
Christmas Day, 10:55 PM – Johnny’s Saloon

I gulp down the nth shot of tequila and I look at Brian as he walks back to our table. He’s got this huge smirk on his face it’s almost annoying. Jesus, sometimes I want to slap that smirk away from his face, but then I remember that I’d probably get punch more than twice in the face so no, thank you. I still care about my face, although the other guys don’t seem to care about it considering how many times they slap my face or worse, they draw dicks on my cheeks or forehead while I’m asleep.

“Guys.” He says looking at us. “Ladies.” He adds, glancing at the few girls (meaning Lacey, Valary, Gena and Val’s sister, Michelle) sitting at our table. “Your prayers have been answered. She’s coming.”

I frown at his words. What in the fucking hell is he talking about? Thankfully I’m not the only one confused about his words.

“What prayers? The ones where we asked God to shut you up?” Valary asks and I can't help but chuckle.

“Who? Who’s coming?” Zacky asks.

“Gin, you dick.”

At the mention of the girl’s name, there’s a general whispering. I can’t tell if it’s because we’re all wasted and barely understood his words or if it’s because she’s coming.

“Is she coming here? Now?” Valary asks, her eyes widening and a huge smile on her lips.

My eyes move to Jimmy who hasn’t looked at Brian yet; instead, he’s staring at his Guinness. He looks calm but his hand around the glass shows him everything but calm. He’s holding that glass so tight that I can see his white knuckles. The fuck? He’s so freaking weird, man.

“What?” Brian asks, sitting down at the table. “No, of course not.”

“Then what are you talking about?”

“I invited her to our New Year’s Eve party.”

“But there’s no New Year’s Eve party.” I say, kind of afraid to speak my mind. Maybe they organized a party and I just don’t remember it?

“I thought we wanted to crash at Dan’s?” Shadows says.

“Thank you for your words, Captain Obvious.” Brian says to me before turning his attention to Shadows. “That was our initial plan, Matt. Now we gotta organize something because she’s coming and she’s expecting food, alcohol, games and in general a fabulous party.”

“Mhm.” Shadows grumbles, thinking about Brian’s words.

“Besides, she’s taking that Andrew.”

Jimmy groans, but doesn’t say anything. His groan, however, is so creepy that I almost jump, scared. So he’s alive.

“Is he her boyfriend or something?” Michelle asks and the other two girls nods.

“Yes, it is! We haven’t met him yet, though.” Lacey explains as I gently rub my hand on her thigh. I wonder what this Andrew looks like or what he does. I’m pretty sure he’s one of those perfect and annoying guys. I mean, I don’t expect anything less from Gin.

“Anyway, let’s fucking plan our best New Year’s Eve party ever!” Brian exclaimed before turning to Johnny. “J, another round! We gotta celebrate!”
The next Monday, 9:32 AM – Starbucks Café, Main Street

Being the early bird she is, Gin is already out for shopping. She did her morning run, then decided to go get some vegetables for lunch and dinner. Right now, however, she is waiting in line to get first coffee of the morning. She’s not a huge coffee lover and has never been one, but today, she feels like she needs some caffeine to go through the day. Her mother wouldn’t stop talking about her wedding and Gin was getting tired of it. If the thought of marrying Andrew wasn’t that bad, her mother constantly reminding her that she needed to do so many things before getting married gets on her nerves.

“Hi, Gin!”

The familiar voice makes Gin turn her head, a softly smile appearing on her lips as she notices the girls standing behind her.

“Gin!” Valary exclaims before quickly hugging her.

“Hi, girls.” She says, her words including the other girl she recognizes, which happens to be Lacey. There’s another girl with them, though and Gin’s eyes moves to her. She’s blonde and incredibly beautiful. “I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Virginia.”

“Gena.” The other girl says, giving her a nod.

“It’s the first time I notice how your name kinda sound alike.” Val observes before shrugging. “So, what are you doing here?”

“What do you think she’s doing, Val? She’s getting coffee, duh!” Lacey says and Gin can’t help but laugh.

“She’s right. I wanna get some coffee before going grocery shopping.”

“Then we should leave you do whatever you were doing.” Gena says. She hasn’t moved her eyes away from Gin and the youngest one is starting to feel quite uncomfortable.

“Brian told us you’re coming to our New Year’s Eve party.” Lacey says, completely ignoring Gena’s words, but slightly glaring at her.

“I am. Well, we are. Brian invited Andrew as well.”

“Yes, of course. I’m sure we’ll have lots of fun.” Valary reassures her.

“I’m sure we will. Andrew hasn’t met anyone of you yet and I just hope everything goes well.”
Lacey frowns at Gin’s words. “Why do you say that?”

“Let’s just say he’s kind of old fashioned and isn’t exactly into metal or rock, for that matter.” Gin says. “And I may have not mentioned the fact that Zacky and the guys play in a metal band.”

Valary laughs and grabs her cup of coffee as the barista hands it to her. “Then it’ll be fun, but it won’t be a problem. The guys are… Well, you know them but they’re not bad so don’t worry too much about your Andrew.”

“I’m not.” Gin says. It’s true, she’s not worried about Andrew. She’s actually more worried about the guys meeting him than viceversa.

“Good.” Val says, putting a hand on her forearm before gently squeezing it. “Besides, there’ll be lots of alcohol and alcohol is always good, right?”

Gin can’t help but think of the last time she got drunk, which happened at the barbecue a week before. She’s thinking of how easily she got drunk when she usually only drinks some wine, how they all ended up playing hide and seek, how she found herself locked in a closet with Jimmy by her side. That thought makes her slightly shiver, but no one seems to notice. Thankfully.

“Of course. I’ll make sure to bring the dessert.”

“Oh, if you bring the same one you brought at the barbecue I’m more than into it.” Lacey laughs and nods. “I swear; you have to give me the recipe or something.”

“I’ll make sure to bring that cake and the recipe for you.” Gin winks at Lacey, who smiles at her.

“So it’s set!” Valary says, placing her cup of coffee on the counter so she can clap her hands. She seems really excited. “I’ll see you in two days, then.”

“I can’t wait!” Lacey exclaims. “Bye, Gin!”

“Yes, I can’t wait either. Bye!” Gin says before watching the three girls walk out of the café. Valary and Lacey seemed really happy to have met her on another occasion that wasn’t a party with the guys; Gena, on the other hand, didn’t seem to be very interested. Actually, the constant glares she gave Gin made her quite uncomfortable. She doesn’t know if it’s because she doesn’t know her or maybe even because she and Zacky used to be close friends, either way, she didn’t like it.

Okay, I'm here!
Gena clearly isn't that fond of Gin, and seems like Gin's family isn't even letting her say much about her own wedding. They should let her do whatever and however she wants it to be!

And she's meeting the gang on New years! Can't wait to read what adventures lie ahead <3
