Water and Salt

“Guys, we’re 90 years old each. We’re gonna get hurt.”

Saturday, 11:53 PM – Brian & Suzy Haner’s house

Johnny.

“Thank you all for coming to this meeting.”

I want to kill him then bury his body under a million rocks. Or maybe killing him under a million rocks. What the hell is their problem? Seriously. One week ago we were stuck in an elevator and about to die and guess what that idiot of Brian Haner Jr. does? He calls a meeting in a freaking broom closet.

“Do you realize that we’re five adult men and–”

“Four and a half.”

“Fuck you, Rev. Brian, you realize that we’re in your fucking broom closet, right?!”

“Don’t yell, Johnny. I already can’t breathe.”

Shadows agreed to attend this meet purely on the fact that he’s aware something’s some crisis going on and he’s convinced that as a leader he must intervene and resolve whatever’s going on. He and his tons of muscles are not exactly comfortable in narrow space.

“I wanted to address an issue.”

“Brian, you’re such a fucking idiot. Speak, now! I can’t breathe in here.” Zacky says, moving his hand, hoping he can somehow breathe better. Besides, it’s dark in here, hence why moving his hand, he also slaps me in the face.

“What the fuck?”

“Sorry, Johnny.”

“Nobody will disturb us here.” Brian reassures us.

“Just fucking speak, for God’s sake!” Zacky says.

“It’s about Jimmy.” Brian says.

“Me? What about me? What have I done?” Jimmy asks, slightly confused.

“You exist.” I say.

“He’s playing all nice and stupid with Lena’s sister.” Brian says.

“I’m not playing all nice and stupid with anyone.”

“And he’s also fucked that Cleopatra.”

“Penelope.” I say, wondering how the hell he thought about Cleopatra.

“Thank you for the news, Radio Gates. The question is, why are you telling us? Isn’t this Jimmy’s business?” Shadows says. Ah, so he’s alive.

“It’s not like you’re a saint, Brian.” Jimmy says.

“Look, Jimmy, be careful with Gin. She’s such an adorable girl and she’s important to me.” Zacky says.

“Zacky, two things. One, you’re so fucking gay. Two, don’t make me laugh, please. What’s with this ‘she’s important’ bullshit? You met again after 50 years last week!” Brian says.

“That’s not important. I’m asking you this as a personal favor, really. I don’t know why, but I still care about her and no, it’s nothing romantic.” Zack says; we all thought for a moment that something was going on between him and Gin and he probably noticed our questioning looks since he feels the need to say something like this. “I do care about her so fucking much so please, I’m begging you, don’t be like the animals you usually are: don’t fuck her and tell her goodbye.” He ads. We’re suddenly all confused and quite shocked, to be honest. We’ve never seen this side of him or even heard him speak so highly of a woman. Not even when he’s speaking about Gena or his past girlfriends.

“She seems a nice girl.” Shadows says.

“What do you even know? You two barely spoke to each other!” Brian says.

“Unlike you dicks, I don’t need a fucking teacher's aide to understand things.”

“Brian, may I know why the fuck do you feel the need to tell everybody about what you think are my intentions with Gin?”

“Because I know you and we don’t wanna go through the same experience…”

Two knocks on the door. We all turn our heads and Zacky hits me in the head again; not with his hand this time but instead with his head.

“May I?”

The voice is clearly Gin’s and we’re all surprised. We widen our eyes in the darkness. What the fuck do we do. If we reply, we just prove her and the entire group of guests of the house that we’re five idiots; if we don’t, we prove her and the entire group of guests of the house that we’re five complete idiots.

“Come in.”

“Johnny, what the fuck!” Brian whispers, his voice slightly showing how instead of whispering he wanted to yell at me. Shadows opens the doors and light finally comes into the closet for a brief moment.

“Come in, quick!”

I can’t hold back and I start laughing. So does she. When the door finally closes behind her, there’s darkness all around us again. Nobody’s speaking.

“What are you guys doing in here?”

Zacky reaches out so quickly that he even touches my crotch, then pulls Gin towards him and wraps an around her. She chuckles, then her chuckle turns into an adorable laugh.

“Don’t you dare touch her.” Zacky warns us all, wrapping his other arm around her as well.

“Thank you, Zack.”

Brian’s annoyed by Gin joining the meeting. After all, we’re not exactly kids anymore and we can’t do all this hiding anymore, right? “I wanted to speak with my friends. Privately.” Brian tells her.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I’m gonna go, then.”

“No, stay.”

Did I speak? Yes, I did. I can’t see them but I know they all turned their heads towards me.

“There’s no reason why you should leave.”

Gin slowly pulls away from Zacky. “Why don’t we play hide and seek?” She suggests, “It’s dark outside, almost everyone is gone, so why not?”

Nobody speaks for a moment.

“Guys, we’re 90 years old each. We’re gonna get hurt.” I say and silence follows my words
again.

“Let’s get hurt, then.” Jimmy says, speaking for all of us.
Sunday, 12:17 PM – Laundry room, Brian & Suzy Haner’s house

“I'm already in here!” Brian hisses, not really sure why he agreed to this bullshit.

Gin ignores him and gets inside. “I was with Valary, but I lost her. Can I sit?”

Brian groans and lets her sit down next to him. That place is incredibly small and somehow he feels like he can’t breathe. Maybe it’s her perfume, her presence or maybe just the fact that they’re hiding in a small closet.

“Who’s counting?” He asks since she’s already inside.

“Your father.”

His father. Of course.

There they are. Drunk enough to play the third round of hide and seek, laughing like hyenas, push each other and get stuck under couches without being able to get out (Johnny) or trip over a carpet and hitting a small cabinet with burning joss sticks on it, making them fall and almost setting the house on fire (Shadows). Gin drank a couple of shots of tequila with salt and lemon; she challenged Jimmy and she obviously lost. Brian wanted to challenge Gin as well, but she gave up soon. He ended up drinking a couple of tequila shots, beer, Jagermeister, Jack Daniel’s and God knows what else; he can’t exactly stand still but his mind is still somehow lucid.

“I noticed Gena isn’t here.” He says.

“Who is Gena?” She asks, grabbing the end of her dress to make sure it doesn’t show up from the little curtain that is currently hiding the two of them. Her bare leg gets completely exposed and Brian coughs and widens his eyes, surprised by the view. He can’t see much since it’s pretty dark in there, but there’s enough light for him to see her leg; he can even feel it since they’re squeezed together and his arm is touching her bare leg. “Sshh.” She tells him and chuckles softly.

“Sorry. That’s–whoa.” He said and smirked.

“So, who’s Gena?”

“Yeah, right.” He says, trying to focus on something that isn’t her leg. “She’s Zacky’s girlfriend.”

“Oh.” Gin says without really commenting his words.

Brian looks at her and tries to read her face; he can’t see much but apparently she can feel his eyes on him.

“That’s not what you think.” Gin says, almost feeling the need to explain her own ‘oh’. “I’m just surprised, that’s all. Honestly, I’m not even sure why I’m surprised.” She admits.

Brian shrugs. “I don’t think much when it comes to you, nice ass.” He says, “I mean, I don’t really know you although I wouldn’t mind getting to know you better if you know what I mean." He adds with a smirk even though she can barely see in the darkness. "What I really can’t understand is why you don’t have a problem with Jimmy.”

“What do you mean why I don’t have a problem with Jimmy?”

“After what he’s done to your sister. I know I shouldn’t tell you, he’s my best friend. Actually, I’m not even sure why I’m telling you. Why am I telling you?”

Gin smiles. “Because you’re drunk, Brian. Anyway, to answer to your first question, I don’t have a problem with Jimmy because I know Magdalena.”

“Magdalena?”

“Lena. That’s her name. Magdalena.”

Brian stays quiet for a brief moment. “Jesus. What a shitty name.”

“Yeah, she thinks so, too.”

“I’M COOOOMING!” Somebody says from outside.

Gin lowers her voice and moves her head closer to Brian. “Your father’s drunk.”

“I noticed.” He whispers back.

A strange feeling runs down their backs and they don’t know if it’s because they’re both drunk and have been sitting way too closer for too long or if it’s because it feels like they’re kids again, back in a time they didn’t even share together; they’re in fifth grade, friends, and are trying to hide from the big bad wolf that’s trying to catch them. The excitement is so much that they can barely hold back their laughs. Thankfully, after a while, they hear Papa Gates stumble up the stairs and exit the laundry room.

“I think I’ll find another hiding place.” Gin says, slowly moving the curtain to see if Papa Gates has really left. He has.

“Gin.” Brian suddenly says and as quick as he spoke, he regretted his own words. “Your sister almost killed herself for Jimmy.”

Gin is almost outside of the hiding place and is looking around; besides, in this position he can admire her butt that he likes so much.

“That’s one way of looking at it.” She replies before running away, leaving him there to reflect on her words.
Saturday, 12:33 PM – McKenna’s closet, second floor, Brian & Suzy Haner’s house

Gin runs up the stairs without even breathing. She notices Zacky hidden in the under-stair closet so she quickly waves at him; he simply smiles at her. Her heart’s beating incredibly fast and she’s really scared someone’s gonna get her. At point she noticed what appeared to be the bedroom of a teenager and she quickly got inside. She closed the door behind her and for a moment she looked around, noticing how the walls were painted in purple. So pretty. She saw a closet and quickly got inside, slowly sitting on the ground and running a hand through her hair.

“What the hell, Gin? God, you’re such a stupid girl.” She says, “Why did you even agreed to come back to Huntington Beach? LA or any place would’ve been much better. Stupid, stupid, stupid, Gin!”

“So many compliments.”

That voice, even whispered, is known to Gin. She quickly gets up, scared, but she’s able to hold a scream. “Hey, I didn’t wanna scare you, little fairy.” He says, putting his hands on her shoulders.

It takes her a couple of seconds to calm down. He doesn’t ask her what she meant with her words and she doesn’t tell him.

“Well, it seems like all you do is scaring me, James. You’re really good at it!” She says, a little bit too harsh maybe.

“Finally.”

“Finally what?”

“Some anger.”

Gin sighs heavily and runs a hand through her hair again. “I’m drunk and we’re locked into a closet.” She says, saying the obvious. He doesn’t say anything, though. He just stands there and she can feel his eyes on her. “I’m not mad at you about what happened with Lena, Jimmy.”

“I am. I’ve always been mad at myself for that thing.”

She sighs again. “Lena’s my sister. Don’t make me say things I don’t wanna say.”

In the darkness, thoughts are blurred by alcohol and tiredness. She smells the scent of leather jackets worn by a teenager and of cigarettes smoked by a man.

“I can smell My Little Pony shit in here.” He says. Gin stays quiet for a moment before starting to laugh, softly at first and then louder. She just can’t stop and Jimmy start laughing as well; he puts his hand on her mouth and tries to calm down.

“Shh, stop it or they’ll find us!” He says.

When they’re finally able to calm down, Gin sighs. Again. It seems like it’s all she does when she’s around him. Sighing and laughing. “Andrew is in Seattle.” She says, unsure why she felt the need to tell him this.

“Who?”

“Andrew, my–”

“Ah, right. Your boyfriend.” He says. “Mmh. What does this Andrew do?” He asks; Brian’s words about Andrew come back to his mind and suddenly, he agrees with him – Andrew is such a stupid name.

“He’s a medical doctor.”

“Mmh. I see.” He seems thoughtful for a moment and in fact he’s thinking of how classic their relationship seems to be. He knows nothing about him or even her for that matter, and yet he isn’t exactly surprised she’s dating a medical doctor. He didn’t expect anything less from her. “How long have you two been together?” He asks for no reason, really.

Gin bits her bottom lip, unsure if she should tell him the truth. “Four years.”

Jimmy widens his eyes for a brief moment, then closes them. “Fuck.” He whispers, “That’s a long time.”

She sighs. “It is.” She agrees. It doesn’t feel like a lifetime; it is like a lifetime. Not wanting to reply to any more questions about Andrew, she decides to change the subject. Kind of. “What about you?”

“What about me? Me and Andrew? Oh, we’ve never been together. I could never date someone called like that. Andrew.”

Gin laughs again. “No, I meant what about your love life?”

“Love. Not sure I’ve never been able to love, little fairy.” He says. “There’s this great quote from this Chilean poet that pretty much sums–”

“FOUND JIMMY AND… AND VERONICA!”

Jimmy and Gin laughs together as Papa Gates find them hidden in his daughter’s closet. The older man grins at them and then runs away, or at least, he tries to. The two watch him stumble out of the room and Gin chuckles, until Jimmy’s words make her stop.

“Virginia.” He says, looking at her. “Her name is Virginia.”

Gin smiles softly at him then looks away to straighten her dress. “So tell me, what do you even know about Chilean poets?”

“Oh, I know many things, little fairy. Many, many things.”
