Just Friends
I wake up to the sun shining through the curtains and the bed being empty of a certain guitar player. Glancing around the room I don’t see Brian anywhere and the bathroom light is off. I sit up and stretch while letting out a yawn before swinging my legs off the bed and slowly standing up. I head to the bathroom to relieve myself, change back into my clothes, and brush my teeth. Afterwards I head downstairs to see if I can find Brian. After searching in all the rooms I decide to check in the backyard. I walk out the sliding glass door to find him lounging in a chair as he hums a tune to himself for a second before stopping and writing something down in a notebook. Smiling to myself I walk up side him placing a quick kiss on his cheek before plopping down in the chair next to him. He gives me a smile before closing his notebook and placing the pencil on top of it. I give him a small frown.
“Why won’t you let me see what you’re working on?” I ask while giving him the puppy dog look.
“It’s not ready yet Ads. I don’t want you to see it till it’s perfect.” He replies while standing up and grabbing the notebook before heading inside. Sighing I follow him into the kitchen where he opens the fridge, pulling out two bottled waters. He hands me one before he opens his own taking a swig.
“Well what do you want to do today?” He questions while leaning against the counter. I raise my eyebrow up while looking at him.
“Well I need to go home and clean and work on some of my artwork.” I reply with a shrug.
“Oh. Ok yeah that’s fine. I need to work on some songs anyways.” He says while looking out the window. I frown before nodding my head. I can tell something is bothering Brian so I decide to joke with him, hoping to make him smile.
“Plus I figured you would want to go out and find your future wife Mr. Gates.” I tease as he looks to me with an unexplainable expression. It almost looks like heartbreak. He quickly changes it to a smirk before scoffing.
“Please I don’t have to try and find her. I have plenty of women begging for the chance.” He jokes.
“Yeah if that’s the case then why do you always hang around me? I think it’s because you’re scared that if you put yourself out there then no one is going to come for you.” I say with a little more bite than I mean but something about what he said just got under my skin. I cross my arms across my chest and stand there waiting to see if he had anything to say. Then he does something I wasn’t expecting. He started laughing.
“What’s so funny?” I huff while frowning at him as he continues to laugh. I start getting angry the more he laughs which in turn makes him laugh more. I stomp my foot like a hormonal teenager and turn around heading into the living room to find my purse so I can leave. I hear Brian’s laughter die down, as his footsteps get louder as he makes his way to me. I quickly snatch up my purse and slip my shoes on.
“Ads I’m sorry please don’t leave here mad. I didn’t mean to laugh. You just are so cute when you’re angry.” Brian says as he tries placing his hand on my arm to stop me but I snatch it away from him. He gives me an apologetic expression while I’m sure mine was more of a hurt one.
“You know my feelings might be a joke to you Brian but I refuse to let you stand here and treat me like I’m someone to be stepped on.” I seethe as I open the door.
“Ads I really didn’t mean to upset you. Honestly I didn’t mean to. I would never hurt you on purpose. I don’t think you are a joke, far from it. Please don’t leave upset with me.” He responds while pulling me into a hug.
“Fine. I forgive you, Brian, but I really do need to go. I have a lot to do today.” I state as I pull away from his embrace. He reluctantly lets go of me while looking into my eyes. After a minute he nods his head before placing a soft kiss on my cheek.
“You know Adalay you’re becoming one of my best friends. I don’t know what I would do if you were really still mad at me.” He says while batting his eyelashes at me and putting on a fake southern belle accent to which I can’t help but let out a giggle before shaking my head at him.
Suddenly any anger that was still residing in me for him went away. I couldn’t stay mad at him even if I wanted too.
“I could never stay upset with you. I think it’s just my time of the month so I’m more hormonal and emotional than usual.” I reply to which Brian scrunches his face up in disgust.
“In that case I need to get you home so you can wreak havoc on your own house. I don’t want to have to clean up after you.” He goes to put his shoes on and I shake my head at him.
“First off what the hell do you think happens when a girl has her time of the month?” I question with a giggle.
“Umm duh… aliens come visit and take over your body. They cause you to flip out, cry, and laugh in the same breath. While making you crave chocolate because they personally don’t want to get fat so they get to enjoy it without the consequences. They also are bigger than you so they have to squat in your body making their knees be in your stomach which causes the cramps.” He replies with the most serious expression. I stand there blinking for a minute trying to comprehend what he just said. After a moment I just shake my head at him.
“That’s the most absurd thing I have ever heard. I don’t understand your mind most of the time.” I say still kind of dumbfounded by his ridiculous answer. He just shrugs at me and grabs his keys. I follow him out to his car, getting in and buckling up. He starts the car while pulling out of his drive way and heading towards my house. I watch the houses pass by as I think about how upset I got about the idea of other women being with him. I mean it’s not like I like him except like a friend so I don’t understand why it bothered me so much. I decide not to think about it and decide it was just a small lapse of sanity as we turn out of his subdivision. I focus on the music that Brian turned on and let it overtake my mind, singing along with it while ignoring the nagging voice in the back of my mind.
