Turn The Other Way

The sun was setting, the air getting crisp, and the scent of the ocean was becoming potent. People were walking around the pier conversation never running dry. Couples holding hands, kids being rowdy, people enjoying the company of someone. Meanwhile two women were sitting on a bench silently contemplating the possibilities of activities for the night.

“We can go crash Syn’s party.” The short red haired woman said. The taller auburn haired one contemplated it.

“Why the hell not.” Sloane said. “Does this have anything to do with Brian having a date?” She asked her companion.

“Nope.” Danie said popping the “p”. Sloane knew that she was hurt that they were not invited. Zacky had extended his invite to them. Brian and Danie had been fighting because his girlfriend didn’t like the two women very much. She seemed to think that Danie and Brian had a thing which was incorrect. They had been like siblings since they had met. Miranda, Brian’s new girlfriend, didn’t like how close the two women were to him. They had all grown up together. They cherished the fact that they had regularly done beer runs before band practice and would go sit at the park and drink 40s until they couldn’t really walk.

“You just wanna piss Miranda off don’t you?” Sloane finally spoke up once the two women abandoned the bench they had been occupying for what seemed like hours. Danie just shrugged.

“She’s a skank bag dude.” Danie said as they walked to the black impala that Danie bought in high school. “Besides, Matt is there and he owes me a rematch on the shot challenge.” She said with a smirk. Danie and Matt had always flirted, but nothing ever happened. Whereas Sloane and Zacky had been together since high school. Sloane felt bad for not going to the party with him, but he understood that she couldn’t leave Danie out all because of hoe.

“Fair enough dude.” Sloane said opening the door to the car and getting in. Once Danie fired the car up Metalica blasted through the speakers. Danie rolled the windows down and peeled out of her parking space and zoomed off. She pulled up in front of the house and almost hit Matt in the process.

“Jesus! Where the fuck did you get your license? A cereal box?” He shouted as the two women exited the vehicle.

“I got it from the same person you did...only difference is I didn’t almost flip the fucking car!” Danie said and Sloane began to laugh.

“You’re here late Matthew….care to explain?” Sloane asked trying to make the two forget what they were talking about. Sometimes it worked, but other times it just made them argue more.

“Because I don’t like this chick that’s why.” He said looking at Danie, who just rolled her eyes.

“You better be talking about hoebag in there and not me.” She sneered at him, and he rolled his eyes. Sloane just sat there watching the two.

“Good Christ will you two just fuck already!” They all turned around they saw Jimmy standing there with his usual shit eating grin on his face. Danie and Matt both rolled their eyes while Sloane laughed with him. “Good thing you guys are here. I mean for entertainment purposes.” Danie and Sloane looked at him.

“What do you mean?” Danie asked him and he shook his head.

“Bitch has been ragging on us the whole night. You guys won’t believe what the worst part is.” Sloane looked at him.


“What might that be James?” She asked him while Danie just looked at Matt who she knew already knew the answer.

“No booze man!” Danie and Sloane gasped and looked at him.

“What kind of creature deprives this group of man-children their need of alcohol?” Danie asked with mock shock. Jimmy frowned.

“Exactly! This bitch is a monster!” He said sounding upset. Everyone knew he was actually upset. Jimbo loved his beer and Jack. He was always a ball of energy but with those two drinks he was the life of the party.

“Excuse me?” The whole group stopped laughing and stood straight.

“Not you.” Jimmy mumbled. “The photographer we are replacing for the tour.” He said. He was rather convincing, but Miranda wasn’t one to always believe him.

“What are you doing here?” She said looking at Danie who just rolled her eyes in response.

“Dropping Sloane off to see Zacky.” She said walking back to her car. She wasn’t going to cause a scene in the middle of the street. “By the way Miranda. You may want to watch for tornadoes, I hear they are dropping houses on bitches….Oh I mean witches.” The rest of the group came out and this one comment made everyone laugh, including Brian.

“Are you going to let her talk to me that way Bri?” She said turning towards him fuming. No one was sure if it was embarrassment or the fact she just didn’t like Danie, or even the group in general. Brian did the only thing he could do in this awkward situation. Walked down the stairs.

“Yeah actually. You want to know why?” When she went to answer Brian cut her off. “Because you need to support me and my friendships no matter what. That’s what we do as a couple.” He said. SHe just looked at him in awe, while Danie looked on with a smirk. Then Miranda’s look changed and she gave him a certain look which made him turn to Danie. “Sorry dude, you gotta go.” He said and it was Danie’s turn to give him a look of awe.

“Brian, man.” Jimmy started but Danie put her hand up.

“It’s cool. I guess pussy from a hoe is more important than a life long friendship. We are done Haner.” She said getting in her car and peeling out. The whole group just watched. Matt turned and looked at Brian.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” He roared. Sloane jumped at Matt’s sudden outburst. “You know what? Fuck this!” He said getting into his car and heading to the one spot he knew Danie would be. The rest of the group sat there in shock. Matt had always been the one to try and be the sound of reason, but there were still times he would have enough of the shit.

Brian looked at Miranda and at the rest of the group. Sloane rolled her eyes. “Let’s go guys. We obviously aren’t good enough to be here.” She said glaring at Brian and Miranda. She had had enough of the bull that came with their very one sided relationship. Brian loved Miranda, but Miranda loved Brian’s money and fame. Everyone but him could see it. Brian watched his friends all walk off to their cars. Jimmy put a hand on his shoulder.

“You know where we will be. If you decide to show up don’t bring her, because you know damn well Danie will beat some ass. And you know none of us will stop her.” He said loud enough for Miranda to hear.

“Brian you WILL not go.” Brian rolled his eyes. The whole group stopped at this point to watch what was going to happen. To their dismay nothing happened. Zacky opened Sloane’s door and let her in. Once he rounded the car and got in he sighed before putting the key into the ignition.

“Well, that was interesting.” Sloane said with a chuckle. Zacky starting laughing and shook his head.

“It was doomed from the beginning.” He replied still laughing. Sloane looked over at him as they drove to Johnny’s, their favorite bar. When they arrived they saw that Johnny and Jimmy were there. They got out of their car and walked into the loud bar. The sound of The Misfits blasting from the speakers. They smiled as they walked to the table where two of their friends were.

While the four drank they had no idea that Danie sat at the beach with a bottle of Jack under a pier. Matt walked up slowly and quietly, watching her actions quietly. He noticed her red and black hair was in a messy bun on top of her head. Her beanie was sitting next to her in the sand. Her shoulders heaved and he knew she was crying, and he hated when she cried. He watched as she brought the half empty bottle to her lips. He figured she had gone home to get it because her car wasn’t in the parking lot. He watched as she huffed and kicked the sand. Matt finally walked closer to her. He sat down next to her and pulled her close to him. She started to sob harder. The air was getting chilly and they can smell the salt from the ocean.

“What’s troubling you Dee?” He asked her and she shook her head in response. He sighed and took the bottle from her taking a gulp.

“Can’t a girl get drunk in peace?” She asked him and he shook his head handing her the bottle.

“Not a chance.” He replied softly. “Besides we have been friends for too long.” He said as he moved some bangs from her face.

“Yeah friends.” She mumbled and took a gulp from the bottle. She knew he wasn’t into her the way she was into him. He was M fucking Shadows. He was built and he had an amazing personality. She was just a journalist who worked freelance and she was a basket case.
Matt shifted slightly and looked at her. She had puffy eyes and some mascara running. He decided it was his moment. He went ahead and leaned in and kissed her. She sat there shocked and then she kissed him back. She put her arms around his shoulders and deepened the kiss. They pulled away and Danie still had her eyes closed, savoring the feeling she had just witnessed. It was like an electric shock, and she could still feel the tingles. He pushed some bangs from her face and she opened her eyes. The two stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity. She shifted and grabbed the bottle of Jack and took a drink then handed it to him.

He took the bottle and took a gulp. “Remember when we were in high school and you had the bright idea for us all to sneak to see Pantera? Danie laughed lightly. “You told Bri that if he wasn’t down at the park thirty five minutes before the doors opened that you were going to hunt him down and kick his balls in so much that he would taste them for the rest of his life.” Danie laughed that time a little louder. “This bitch is a phase you and I both know it. He is going to end up dumping her and we all know it is bound to happen soon.” Danie nodded, but couldn’t help but feel that this was going to last forever. “Right after you bailed I yelled at him.” Danie looked at Matt with surprise evident in her eyes.

“What the fuck Matt!” She exclaimed and he looked at her with surprise and as if she were reading his mind she went on. “Why would you do that? I mean shit, she is his girlfriend and I’m just some bitch he has known most of his life.” Matt rolled his eyes and helped her up.

“You’re not some bitch okay? You’re our best friend and you, Bri, and Jim have been inseparable for our whole friendship.” She looked at him.

“Why did you kiss me anyways? I’m not a pity fuck got it?” He smirked at her and shook his head as they walked down the street towards Johnny’s for a few drinks with their friends.

“No one said anything about you being a pity fuck Danielle. I like you and you are going to be stuck with me.” He said throwing his arm around her and pulling her close to him with a wide grin on his face, showing off his dimples.

“News flash Sanders maybe I don’t wanna be stuck with you.” She said rolling her eyes and he squeezed her a little bit as they walked into the bar. They were easily spotted and Sloane raised an eyebrow at the scene in front of the group. It only took Jimmy thirty seconds to comment.

“Jesus! It’s about time bitches! Shots all around!” He yelled and everyone smiled and hollered in excitement. Danie and Matt rolled their eyes as they began to take shots with the small group, the one person who was missing showed up.

“Starting without me?” Danie smiled at her best friend, but she still felt a little sad. They all began to talk while Danie sat there with Matt’s arm around her bringing her some comfort.

“Guys! We forgot to tell you! We finally set a date!” Sloane said with a triumphant smile. She and Zacky had been having issues setting a wedding date because of touring. So it was no surprise that they had finally set one.

“When is it?” Danie asked leaning forward to grab her beer and also so she could her best friend over Sir Mixalot’s “Baby Got Back” which had been played nine times within the past hour. Just as Sloane was about to answer she felt a tug on her hair which caused her to wince.

“Bitch! I fucking warned you!” She heard Miranda’s voice over the song.

“Oh for fucks sake! When did they start allowing demon sluts in this place!” Danie responded with a smile. Sloane tried her hardest not to laugh but couldn’t help it.

“What about band sluts? You are one after all.” This time the bitch had crossed a line. Brian did nothing but sit back. Danie jumped over the bench she was sitting on and grabbed Miranda by the hair and pulled her close. By this time everyone in the bar was watching and the bouncers did nothing. Danie wasn’t one to fight unless it was provoked. They just watched as Danie threw her to a wall and started pounding her face in. Miranda had attempted to fight back but everyone assumed she was too worried about breaking a nail. Matt had finally pulled Danie off of Miranda.

“Brian get this bitch out of here! Make a fucking change to your priorities because a life long friendship over a quick fuck is not worth it!” Matt said and Brian helped Miranda up. She immediately pushed him away.

“Make a choice now Brian!” She screamed at him. “Them or me.” Brian didn’t have to think about his decision. If she had really loved him as much as she claimed she wouldn’t be making him choose.

"Them now get your shit and get out.” He said calmly. Everyone knew it was the calm before the storm. They knew Brian was hot headed when he got angry and knew a whole new world of shit was probably going to open up. Miranda huffed and stormed out. She knew she was not going to win, but she also knew that she wasn’t going to give up her free ticket so easily.
