The Way Your Heart Sounds

The next morning, Lauren was eating cereal in her kitchen when her phone rang. It was Dani, most likely calling to ask about Jimmy.

“Hey Dani.”

“How was your hot date last night? Spare no details.” Lauren rolled her eyes and smiled. Straight to the point, as usual.

“It was really nice. We went out to dinner and came back to my place to hang out for a bit…”

“He got you in bed already? Woah, This guy’s got moves,” she interrupted. Lauren sighed.

“I said we chatted, I did not say we had sex."

“But you wanted to. I can tell by the sound of your voice.” Lauren felt her cheeks go red and rolled her eyes.

“We just kissed.”

“How was the kiss?”

“Wonderful. Ten out of ten.”

“Oooooo you like him so much! This is exciting… Look I gotta run, I just wanted to see how it went. Let me know if anything else happens!”

Lauren got off the phone with her friend and smiled. She couldn’t believe that all of this happened in just a few days. As she started to think about Jimmy again, she couldn’t help but be curious about his band. She had heard one or two songs before that she thought were cool, so the other ones she hadn't heard were probably cool too.

She made her way into her bedroom and grabbed her laptop, typing in the band’s name. Dozens of songs came up, but she clicked on one that had an interesting name: “A Little Piece of Heaven.” Didn’t seem like the kind of song title you’d see performed by a metal band.

As the song started, she noticed there was an animated video along with it.

“Before the story begins…
Is it such a sin
For me to take what’s mine
Until the end of time”

An adorable couple. This seemed like such a cute video, but the song itself had a bit of an ominous tone to it. Maybe that’s what the parental advisory at the beginning of the video eluded to, she thought.

And then the killing started.

She couldn’t help but watch with her mouth wide open. What on earth was she watching? It was unlike anything she had ever seen in her life.

“Must have stabbed her fifty fucking times…”

Was that Jimmy’s voice? No, it couldn't be.

Before she knew it, the entire eight minutes were over. She sat and stared at the screen for a minute, trying to take in everything that she just saw and heard. That was definitely the most interesting song she had ever stumbled across. Looking at the recommended videos on the side, she decided to click on another: “Dear God.”

As the song started, a country guitar riff and gentle vocals filled her room. She looked down to double check that she was still listening to the same band. Yep, Avenged Sevenfold. How they could write two songs so astronomically different and pull it off was beyond her understanding.

She continued to spend the next hour watching music videos, drooling over Jimmy much of the time. Especially in Seize the Day, which was her favorite song and video so far.

Checking the time, she noticed it was only around noon. It would probably be a few more hours at least until she heard from Jimmy. She hoped that he would ask her to do something again tonight. Since she was off from work tomorrow as well, she wouldn’t mind having some company for a bit. It was getting kind of lonely there anyway. There was also no denying that she wanted to spend more time getting to know Jimmy.

The rest of the day seemed to drag on endlessly as she did housework and caught up on some reading. When her phone started to buzz, she nearly jumped out of her seat in anticipation and picked it up immediately.

“Hey Jimmy!”

“Lauren! I missed you today. How’s your day off been?”

“Good. Better now that I’m talking to you, though,” she smiled.

“Oh stop… you’re making me blush in front of my friends…” he mumbled.

“How was your recording?”

“Awesome, super productive. Hey are you busy tonight? I’d love to stop by and hang out for a bit if you’re up for it.”

Exactly what she was waiting for.

“I’m free, I’d love to have you stop over.”

“Yay! Listen I’m gonna stop home real quick to shower because I’m sweaty from drumming. I’ll be there soon.”

“Can’t wait.”

After hanging up, Lauren wasted no time making herself look cute. A little bit of makeup and a casual sundress would do. She hoped that she had some food laying around in the kitchen so she could offer him something to eat, since she hadn’t been shopping in a while.

Her doorbell rang about an hour after she hung up with Jimmy. She opened the door and smiled as he quickly scooped her up in a a strong bear hug.

“I’ve been waiting to see you all day! You look so cute in your little dress by the way,” he said.

“Why thank you. Come in, make yourself at home.”
