Fresh Start

Matt and I have been in the car for 10 minutes with nothing but silence.

I can’t take it anymore.

“Matt, you can talk to me ya know?”

“Oh, sorry Jade. I just didn’t want to make you uncomfortable again.”

“I’m sorry Matt I just can’t stand the silence. You don’t make uncomfortable Matt. You make me nervous and confused.”

Did…did I just say that?

“What? Why?”

“Oh, look! We’re here!”

Dropping the subject.

Matt just stares at me weirdly but I guess he decides to let me be and we both head into the store.

“So what are you going to buy? I thought you didn’t know the gender until next month?” says Matt as I grab a shopping cart.

“I don’t know the gender so I’m going to buy everything in a color that can be for both sexes. I won’t paint the room and get clothes until I know the gender.” I say as I head toward the cribs.

Does Matt really like kids? I wonder if Johnny was lying or not?

I mean not that I care or anything, just wondering.

He probably has girls lined up for him, just look at him!

That’s it! I’m done lying to myself. Matt is cute. I mean attractive…I….okay, he’s sexy!

Never saying this out loud. It’s not like anything will ever happen between us.

“Jade, are you okay? Your spacing out?”

“Umm, yea, I’m just going over what I need.”

I stop and look at the cribs trying to decide between white and black.

“Jade, what about this one?”

I turn to Matt and see he found the crib I was eying online.

Damn, can he get anymore perfect?

“Whatcha think?” says Matt.

“This is the one I actually had my eye on. Thanks, Matt.” I say as I look over the crib. I glance at him and see him smile as if he’s proud of himself.

Wow, he actually has good taste.

“Anything I can help the lovely couple out with today?” says a man around his 40’s.

I just freeze, did he just say couple?

“Actually, yes. We would like to buy this crib please.” Says Matt as he smiles at the man.

“Of course, I’ll have it put in the front for you. My name is Alex if you need anymore help.”

Alex and another worker put the box onto a cart and leave.

I just stare dumbfounded.

“Umm so, What’s next?” says Matt with a smile and…..is that a….blush?

Ignoring what just happened.

Even though I can tell Matt knows I’m hiding something, our time at the store was actually fun. Matt actually asked questions and was very helpful.

I was shocked Matt wasn’t asking anymore questions but of course I spoke too soon.

On the way home my paranoia got the best of me while driving and I kept looking in my mirrors, making sure no one was following me.

I thought he wouldn’t notice.

I park and Matt helps me unload everything into the house but I can see him overthinking things.

“Jade, that’s it.”

“Thank you, Matt. I had fun today.” I smile at Matt as he leans on the doorway.

“Jade, why….why did you keep looking to see if someone was following you?”

“I don’t know what your talking about.” I say as I give him a glare. I understand the curiosity but this is taking it too far.

“What are you hiding? Are you running? Tell me.”

Oh, now he’s accusing me?

“I think you should leave Matt.”

I walk away from him away so he won’t see my tears.

“I’m not trying to be nosy. I just want to help Jade. I want to be here for you, you just have to let me.”

I let the tears fall as I hear the door slam.

If only he knew.
