There Is No Me Without You

By the time we got to Glasgow Airport it was 16:25pm meaning we only had 35 minutes until we had to board the plane, we were currently checking our bags in to then go through security hopefully without a hitch then make our way to the gate. As we waited in line for it to be our turn to go through the metal detector i saw at least five people being ushered away for what i can only assume them to be trying to smuggle something across the water, really silly on their part if the Glasgow Security couldn't detect anything im sure the American Security would after all security all over the world was cracking down on smuggling. I shook my head and took my watch, ring and chain off as well as taking my shoes off and putting them in the little dish to get scanned, I got through security without any trouble and was now waiting on my mum to put her shoes back on and get her bag before walking to the gate. The current time was 16:45pm and the lady called for us to board the plane for California. I looked at my mum who was smiling and grabbed her hand "Lets get out of here Ang!" I said with a small smile and walked towards the gate and down the walkway to the plane, I was excited I always wanted to go to America and see what all the fuss was about but now I'm going to live in one of the most beautiful states ever, I handed my ticket to the stewardess and she showed both me and my mum to our seats. I strapped myself in and looked over to see my mum struggling with her all the while mumbling profanities at the seat belt, I chuckled at her and offered her help, this was the first time she had ever gotten on a plane so you could imagine all the things going through her head. After watching all the people board the plane and get comfy whether that be with a book, music or headphones for the onboard movie the pilot came across the intercom "Good Afternoon ladies gentlemen and children, this is your Pilot speaking. Todays weather is to be dry and clear making this trip almost a breeze. We will be ready for liftoff in 5 minutes and land in sunny California, you will be landing at 19:45pm their time. Thank you for choosing Thompsons. Enjoy your flight." I looked at my mum and smiled "Its crazy to think that we will be on a ten hour flight, and when we get there it will be quarter to four in the morning here and quarter to eight there" my mum nodded "I know it's really weird, but least it will warmer and nicer there than it is here, but hey I'm going to try and get some shut eye, we have to go straight to the house when we get home and start unpacking! You should try and sleep too honey!" she said leaning over and kissing my cheek, I nodded "ok mum love you" she gave a warm smile and closed her eyes there would be no harm in me closing my eyes for a while either, after all it's a ten hour flight and I don't like the take offs. I closed my eyes and soon enough darkness surrounded.

"Gemma, Gemma, GEMMA!!!!!" I tried to jump up from where i was sitting but i couldn't i felt trapped I felt like I was being wrapped up in two large vines, I could hear laughing as i thrashed around trying to get free, I opened my eyes to see my my mum and two oranged face ladies laughing hysterically at me, it took me a moment to realise i was still on the plane and strapped into my seat belt, I sucked my bottom lip in to stop myself from laughing as I felt my cheeks start to heat up "Awk it wasn't that funny, I forgot where I was!" I laughed and unclipped my seat belt standing up and maneuvering myself from the aisle to stand with my mum. "I must admit though it was quite fun watching you squirm and karate kick the air! I mean seriously you are a black belt in kickboxing you almost knocked the stewardess out with a left hook" I rolled my eye and pushed her "no its not funny I thought i was under attack! And she shouldn't have been so close to me then, plus there is other nicer ways to try and wake someone up rather than screaming there name!" I laughed as we walked off the plane and to the carousel to get our bags, "It's a lot more fun the other way though." my mum answered as i walked over to get a trolley for our bags, I shook my head and stopped beside her "I better remember that then eh" she turned and looked at me with narrowed eyes "watch it you know what happens when, ohhh theres the bags grab them!" I reached out quickly and grabbed them all off the carousel I guess I'll never know what will happens. I loaded all the bags onto the trolley and we made our way out to the front of the airport, my first thought was 'Jesus its warm' my second thought was 'what the fuck am i doing here?' I would never fit in here I was all pale considering back home i was the most tanned out of both Jason and Charley, but fuck me these people are beautiful! I looked over to see where my mum was and there she was flagging down a taxi like she had lived here all her life. I pushed the trolley over to the taxi as the man stepped out giving my mum a lovely white toothed grin "good evening ladies here on vacation?" he asked in his Californian voice my mum shook her head "no we have just moved here, heard a lot of nice things about this place and decided to move. Needed the change" My mum answered I knew it pained her talking about moving here but she didn't let too much out of the bag, she was always a keep it to yourself type person. "oh not from America, Scotland im guessing?" My mum smiled and nodded her head and stepped back as the man closed the boot of the car and opened the door for her then me, this was new to me the taxi drivers in Glasgow were nasty people like they were employed by the devil himself, this man was helpful cheery and talkative just what you want you are driving with someone. I suppose there will be a lot of things that will change.The driver got in and clipped his seatbelt in "where to Miss?" he asked as he started the car, "169 Main Street, Huntington Beach please" My mum answered the driver looked round at her and smiled "thats a long way away but since you are new here i will charge you half the price of the usual fare, call it a Welcome to America gesture." I smiled definitely different from Glasgow. I zoned out watching all the buildings go by as my mum spoke away with the taxi driver whose name was Devon.This place was beautiful I was glad to call this my new home I couldn't wait to see what the house looked like, to see what my new school looked like not that i really cared for school all that much, and meet new people hopefully I would be a little more popular than i was back home.

Devon turned into a little street it looked really nice almost like the suburbs, as we drove past some house he stopped in front of a lovely two storey high house that had a little white fence going all the way around the house and a beautiful garden. I opened the door and and walked round to the pavement and just stared at it taking my phone out my pocket i took a few pictures to send to Charley and Jason later, I looked to see if my mum needed help but Devon was helping her unpack them into the house I decided to go a little walk around the back as i approached the back garden gate i could hear the sloshing of water and i smell sea salt, I didn't know we were that close to the beach. I reached over to open the gate using the little handle and walked round to the patio where i saw a few chairs set up and a little shed along with an outside barbeque planked in the middle of the patio, i smiled i could get used to this, I walked a little more down to the back garden and saw an outdoor pool my eyes widened "Jesus Angie you kept that one quite!" I said to myself with a low chuckle the closer i got the more chlorine i could smell, but I was still getting that overpowering smell of sea salt, I turned my head to the very back of the garden where there was another gate "wonder where that goes" I walked to the bottom gate and opened it and there it was, the beach. "Holy Shit you really out done yourself on this one Angie!" It was beautiful the sun was just setting making it look like it was straight out of a movie, I pulled my phone out and snapped a few more pics of it. "Its amazing isn't it?" said a voice from the side of me, I jumped and turned to see a boy my age standing leaning against fence, he had longish spiky hair a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off and a pair of three quarter length ripped jean trousers and a pair of flip flops. It was his eyes as he looked at me that stood out lovely chocolate brown eyes peered at me waiting for me to answer "uh aye its lovely" I answered looking at the sunset and then back to him, this time he smiled "not from here i take it, vacation?" he asked his voice was smooth but husky like he was a smoker, I shook my head "no, just moved here. Mum needed to get away from Glasgow so we moved halfway around the world and here we are. Its a beautiful place, will take me a while to fit it." I answered folding my arms across my chest, he looked me up and down and then nodded "yeah you'll do fine here, were all very nice people. I'm Brian by the way, I'm your neighbour." He introduced as he held his hand out I smiled "nice to meet you Brian I'm Gemma." I took his hand and shook it he had warm, soft skin compared to my cold rough horrible skin, "look don't worry about your move here you will be fine here, I have a few friends in the neighbourhood that would be happy to meet you, I'm sure you will be going to the same school as me anyway so I'd be happy to show you around this place, show you all the cool spots" he said with a wink taking his hand out of mine and shoving it into his pocket, I smiled and nodded "thanks I'd really like that." It was quite as I looked over to the ending of the sun setting, if this is what everyone was going to be like then i was going to love it here. "GEMMMMMA!!!!!" I cringed, I love my mum but she has to ruin the good moments, I heard Brian chuckle, "take it thats our mom?" he jutted his finger in her general direction as i nodded "I'm afraid so" I laughed "well thats my cue to leave it was nice meeting you Brian." I smiled and went to walk through the gate back into my garden when he put his hand on my shoulder "It was really nice meeting you too Gemma, I'll see you tomorrow." he spoke in a soft tone and smiled before dropping his arm and turning round and walking back into his garden. I smiled and closed the gate making my way back to the house "GEMMMMMMAAAAAAAA!" My mums voice screeched I rolled my eyes "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WOMAN I'M COMING!" I screamed back, "DON'T BRING GOD INTO THIS HE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH!" she shouted back, i shook my head and laughed "what a red neck of a woman" I said to myself as i reached the back door "That is another thing I know about you, you like to talk to yourself!" I heard Brian say, I looked to the left and there he was sitting in one of the chairs on his patio smiling over at me, I could really get used to living next door to him. Its something good to look at "Good night Brian" I shouted and waved as I pulled the handle to the door down to open it "Good night Love". I walked inside and melted. He was something else.
