From All Ends

Matt dialed the number and as the phone rang I became so nervous. “Hello?” He answered, “Hey Papa Gates how are you?” “I’m well, what do I owe this pleasure of speaking with you today?” “I wanted to talk to you about something and don’t bullshit me.” “Of course, what is it son?” “Tell me about your daughter?” “McKenna? What for?” “No Brian, your other daughter..........Braelynn. Don’t deny her, she’s here with me.” We heard stuttering on the other side before hearing, “How do you know? Brae, is she really with you?” “Yes, she is sitting right next to me hearing everything you are saying.” Matt said. “Braelynn, baby girl, I can’t believe it. Where are you I’ll come out right now and see you! I’ve missed you so much.” I looked wide eyed at Matt and furiously shook my head no, I didn’t want to see him let alone talk to him. Matt sighed, “Hold up Papa. She doesn’t want to see you right now; she wanted me to call and see if you remembered her since you missed meeting her twice growing up. She wanted to hear why you gave her up and if Syn knows; if anyone knows.” There was a long pause before Seniors voice came through the speaker again, “Matt I don’t really want to discuss this with her in front of you. If she wants to know give her my number and have her call me.” “Brian, I understand that you don’t want me to know all the details that you want to talk to Braelynn about; know this though we she is ready to sit down and face you, really hash everything out she won’t do it alone. If it’s not myself, it will be her brothers or her parents. She hasn’t told me that but knowing her for the short time I have known her I know that the first few times she will not be alone. I do suggest you tell Brian soon; he’s my bandmate and my brother I will not keep secrets long from him.” “You wouldn’t dare; he wouldn’t believe you.” “Seriously? Do you even hear yourself? Sure sounds like you want to keep her your dirty little secret. I bet Suzy doesn’t even know, and for him not believing me; I can get proof. Do you want to answer her questions now?” I looked at Matt knowing he could see the tears pooling in my eyes. I silently begged him to get off the phone, hearing the words spoken by my birth father made me regret even trying and even letting the secret out. I knew that I should have lied about the situation with Brian but I knew that if I did and Matt and I got more serious he would find out and be mad for the lying. “I’ll call you back when I am ready to talk to her.” “Fine, just know that even if you call me back she won’t be with me. She leaves me in a few days.” With that the line went dead and I shattered knowing that I was never to come face to face with biological life. Matt calmed me down right as both of our phones rang. Mine was a text from Luka stating he felt off and wanted to make sure I was okay; Matt’s was Brian asking him where he was saying he all the sudden felt ill. Made me wonder if Brian and I had a twin connection even though we never grew up together.
We met up with the guys for dinner and as soon as I saw Brian I knew he was still a little off kilter, he looked at me and asked if I was okay; I knew right then that he knew something was up but couldn’t figure it out. During dinner we discussed out tours and how everything was going. They talked about my concert the night before, it sounded as if I had some sincere new fans; not fans by association. They made me promise to attend one of their concerts as payback which I had no reservations. I knew at the end of their tour I would be in the same town but not for a concert so I could potentially surprise them, just had to get the Berry’s phone numbers. Two days later the guys loaded up and we said our goodbyes as I headed off to an interview. I never imaged how hard it would be to say bye to Matt now that it seemed we were on a whole other level with each other. A couple of days later Matt texted while I was doing sound check to call him ASAP. Once I finished up I headed to my dressing room and sat with my momma who joined me a few days prior. I told her that I needed to call Matt but she was welcome to stay though she chose to go for a walk. I quickly dialed his number seeing several texts coming in, “About fucking time you called. Holy shit what the fuck were you doing?” “Fuck Matt, I have a concert tonight, something’s wrong with the soundboard that we had to fix.” “Still, I needed you.” “Matt if this is how you’re going to act knowing what touring entails I’m done.” “No, no, Brae come on baby girl. I’m sorry.” “What did you want Sanders.” I heard a sharp intake on the other line knowing I hit a nerve, “I’m not going to deal with receiving a guilt trip miles away before a concert.” “Brae, I’m sorry. It’s just Senior called me back flipping out demanding to talk to you, he thinks I’m lying when I say that you’re not with me and is flying out to see us which has Brian questioning motive which is then stressing Senior out because he doesn’t want to tell Brian anything right now.” “Matt, calm down. You said it yourself that Brian needs to know, Senior also needs to know who I am besides his daughter. Matt, it will be okay.” “I know, just we as a band have so much going on; writing for the new record, interviews, concerts, meet and greets. We don’t need the extra stress.” “Matt, it will be fine. Call me if you need me. You know my schedule. Just don’t be a complete jerk to me again.” He apologized again and we just talked about random stuff for a while; I was called to stage and he was called by the guys. I told my momma what had happened on his side and all she could do was shake her head.
A couple of weeks later I was sitting in my hotel room relaxing when my phone rang, I didn’t recognize the number so I ignored it but they kept calling so I finally picked up. “Hello?” “Braelynn?” “Who is calling?” “It’s Brian, Syn, the guitarist from your boyfriends’ band.” My nerves heightened, only one reason he could be calling and Matt didn’t even give me a heads up. “Oh, hey Brian, is everything okay?” “Matt broke his phone if you are wondering why he didn’t call for a heads up.” “How’d you know?” “My dad was here, told me everything. I’m still kind of in shock. Why didn’t you say anything?” “What did he exactly tell you?” “You’re my sister, my twin sister, and our parents are fucking jerks and stupid and I can’t believe I went this long without knowing. Is this why you always walked away when I was with Matt? Why didn’t you say something?” “Brian it wasn’t my place to say anything, and if I did you would have thought I was crazy. I wasn’t ready to face you; I knew that you lived in California but I didn’t think I’d run into you; at least not that fast.” “You had to have known when you met Matt, Larry must have said something.” “Larry never told me he was managing your band Brian; he only told me that he knew you and my biological family. I’m sorry Brian, I hope that this doesn’t cause problems; if it’s going to be awkward between us I’ll end things with Matt. I don’t want to break something.” With that I heard a loud WTF, knowing it was Matt, not knowing he was listening in. “I assume Matt has been listening the whole time?” “Yes, he pretty much begged. I’m sorry.” “It’s alright. Let’s leave things as they are for now and we can talk later. Tell Matt I will talk to him only when he gets a new phone.” “Okay, goodnight.” “Night Brian.”
