Primal Instinct
“I’m telling you! They’ve just found her this morning!” Victoria almost shouted to an incredulous Emily.
“What’s all the fuss about?” Zacky asked once he got near them. In his mind he already knew answer.
“Mrs. Samuels was found dead this morning!” Her eyes showed panic, but Zacky could also see relief. Yes, he knew that deep down she felt relieved that he had done that, and that was all that mattered.
“Do you know how she died?” Emily asked.
Victoria leaned closer to her. “I’m not sure it’s true, but I heard that she was murdered, and…” She stood silent for a second “She was found naked,” Victoria whispered. Emily gasped, her lean fingers covering her wide open mouth.
Zacky involuntarily rolled his eyes. She was a filthy whore, why were they so shocked? She really had it coming and he knew that deep down Victoria thanked him for doing it.
“Well, I guess that’s karma,” Zacky finally spoke. Both girls looked at him with a horrified expression on their faces.
“However much you hate that someone, that’s a heartless thing to say,” Emily locked her gaze on him. In that moment she realized that that must had been the first time she had talked directly to him.
A smile lingered on Zacky’s face, almost like if he was mocking her. Poor thing; that creature didn’t even know what true love was about. He almost felt sorry for Emily’s misfortune. For knowing nothing about true love, for not being loved the way Victoria was.
His fingers curled into fists. She had no right to judge him for loving Victoria in his own way.
Victoria looked at her watch and suddenly got up. “Oh shit, I’m going to be late. I’ve got a class now.” She explained.
“I’ll take you to your classroom.” Zacky offered after Victoria said goodbye to Emily.
“There’s no need to.” She assured him, but Zacky placed his hand on her back and slowly forced her to walk.
“But I insist.” His words almost sounded like a demand, and Emily frowned at his back.
Once they got out of the building, Victoria dressed her jacket and, as they walked side by side, Zacky understood that that was the perfect time for his next move.
“So, Victoria, do you have any plans for thanksgiving?”
Her eyes quickly brightened up. “Oh, it’s going to be amazing! Emily invited me to spend a few days with her in Los Angeles!”
If Victoria had watched carefully, she would have seen Zacky’s jaw tighten and his nostrils widen. He couldn’t let Victoria escape from him, not now when he had planned everything so perfectly. Like an animal in the fight-or-flight mode, his muscles tensed up while his heart beat accelerated, trying to find a way to turn the game around. Emily had taken the best of him, but the fight wasn’t over yet. He just needed something to make her change Victoria’s mind.
“I’ve never been to L.A. before; it must be an amazing city!” She said, excitement filling her voice. Zacky really needed to do something about that and, while his mind raced and searched for a way to make Victoria change her mind, she spoke something to him.
“What?” He directed his attention towards her.
“Are you going home for thanksgiving?” Victoria repeated.
Zacky’s eyebrows rose in enlightenment. Thank you, Victoria. She had just given him the perfect excuse to make her stay with him.
“Oh… that. No, I don’t really do that.” He tried his best to seem uncomfortable. “My brother is studying abroad, in England, and my parents…well, my parents are divorced.” He lied effortlessly. “It’s always a mess, and one of them ends up being mad at me when I pick the other to spend thanksgiving day, so I prefer not to go.”
Victoria stopped in front of her classroom. “I’m sorry Zacky…I didn’t know that.” Her hand touched his arm and he smiled slightly.
“You don’t need to apologize. I’m getting used to it.” He tried not to sound too bothered, or too nonchalant. The right amount of both feelings had to be used in order to make her change her mind. “I was going to ask you to stay with me for a couple of days, but you have other plans. That’s okay.” He didn’t want to sound needy, or that would scare her away, but he had to make it enough for her consider his offer.
“Well…”She looked at the classroom door. “I really need to go now, but I’ll talk to you later, okay?” She said goodbye and opened the classroom door.
Now Zacky just needed to wait.
“What was so important that made you send me three text messages and having you waiting for me at my classroom’s door?” Emily asked Victoria as soon as she left her classroom and saw her waiting outside.
“I needed to talk to you urgently.” Victoria looked down at the book she was holding. “I won’t be able to go to L.A. with you…”
Emily’s left eyebrow shot up. “Why?”
“Because… I’m going to stay here, with Zacky… he’s going to stay on campus the whole week.”
“What?!” Emily was shocked. She would have accepted any excuse, except that. How could Zacky manipulate her that way? She was pretty sure that he had made some pretext, just to keep Victoria away from her, and possibly away from everybody.
She hated that guy even more now.
“I really wanted to go Em, but I just can’t leave Zacky alone. He doesn’t have nowhere else to go, and no one to keep him company.”
Her expression changed from rage to defeat in less than a second. “Fine. If that’s what you want…” She knew that when it came to fight with Zacky over her company, for her it was a losing battle.
