Remembering The Dead

Chapter One of Three

“Come on May, no!” He shook her roughly. She wasn't responding, the white foam crawling out of her mouth. “Call an ambulance, hurry!” The bodies scampered all around her, no one knowing what to do. Finally one of the men pulled out a cell phone dialing quickly and stepping back to talk to the operator.

It seemed too late; she had stopped seizing. Her breathing was short, almost nonexistent as he brushed back her hair, his own tears falling on her face.

“Please... god... please...”
xXx
May opened her eyes slowly, the blinding light forcing her to squint. She rose up carefully, eyes traveling over the vast whiteness all around her. All she could see was white sky and flowers, million and millions of flowers.

She liked flowers.

She reached out brushing fingers over petals as she tried to think how she had gotten to where she was. One second she was in the kitchen, getting a drink and dialing her brothers number, the next she was here. Where ever here was.

“Are you lost too?” His voice floated in from behind her, and maybe he had too, she wasn't sure. She turned slightly, looking over her shoulder. He was tall, muscular, decorated, and skinny. She felt a small smile fill her features as she nodded; he smiled back.

“I'm Jimmy, you?”

“May.”
xXx
“She's... she's alive sir, but she's not responsive. Right now she's in a sedative coma.” The boy sank, covering his face with his hands as he shook in his seat. “You can go in and see her in a moment. The nurse is hooking up the last of the IV's.” He only looked up to nod to the doctor before returning his eyes to the linoleum floor.

They said it was cocaine. They said she OD'ed on it, and it was shutting down her system.

He couldn't believe that. Not May, not her. She didn't do drugs, she didn't even know where to buy drugs. So how had they ended up in her system?
xXx
“How long have you been here Jimmy?” May plucked another flower, handing it to him, watching as he worked glorious magic. He was weaving the flowers together, creating a chain of sorts. Whatever it was she thought it beautiful.

“I don't know really. I used to want to count the days but it stopped seeming important.” His voice dropped as he sighed, tying off the two ends. May watched with curiosity as he leaned forward and placed the chain of flowers in her hair. He had successfully created a headband for her. She touched it lightly, fingers drifting over the edges of the petals.

“Thank you.” He only nodded, eyes drifting past her into the vastness of the whiteness of the world. She turned slightly, glancing in the direction he was, only to see more and more flowers.

“Do you see something I don't?” She looked back, seeing the sad smile on Jimmy's face. A darkness was there in his eyes, reflecting off of his crystal blue beauties. He shook his head, reassuring her before rising. He held out his hand and she took it allowing him to pull her up.

“Come on I want to show you my home.”
xXx
“No mom... it's only been a week have a little more faith.” He rolled his eyes, moving away from the bed not wanting his sister, even if she was in a coma, to hear the negativity in his voice.

“I just... I don't understand why she would do drugs. It doesn't make any sense.

“Have more faith in her will you?”
xXx
“Jimmy...”, she called out, pulling herself from the giant bed she had been sleeping in. The house had manifested when they got closer to it that day, just formed out of thin air. She had been awestruck, staring up at the beautiful home.

It was night time, at least what she assumed was night time. He wouldn't explain it to her, only shook his head at her questions and changed the subject. She had found herself wanting to be frustrated but she couldn't. There was a feeling that came with his denial of answers, a dread that sank into her bones. It seemed so odd, the happiness of the place so bright and yet, there was his darkness.

Her feet padded on the wood floor as she left her room and darted across the hall to his. He was asleep, buried deep in the blankets. She crept forward, sinking down on the edge of the bed and watching him. His chest rose and fell, painted beautiful with colors. She resisted the urge to reach out and touch the ink that seemed to glow on his skin.

She found herself laying down beside him, mesmerized by the rhythm of his breathing. It lulled her to sleep as her eyes slowly closed shut.

“Wake up sweetheart...” May swatted him away, only receiving a chuckle in return. Fingers brushed over her cheek softly; her eyes snapped open. Jimmy leaned over her, sitting up in the bed she was now sleeping in.

“Good morning.” His grin grew slightly as she rose, yawning. The moment lasted for seconds, she could feel the darkness creeping in, wrapping around her rib cage as her chest started to ache. “Jimmy, can you just answer me one question?”

“Just one.” his eyes left hers as he fiddled with the comforter that was balled up around her legs. She didn't have to think about the question that had been plaguing her mind for this entire time. The question she couldn't ask before because it didn't seem... it didn't seem logical. But nothing here seemed logical and she couldn't help but just know. Even with knowing however, she had to be told.

“Am I dead?” His fingers stopped altogether as he sighed deeply, eyes refusing to meet hers. She felt so helpless, sitting there waiting for him. Without hesitation she shuffled forward, placing both hands on his cheeks forcing his ocean eyes to stare into her. The deep darkness was clouding over the beauty of them as he encompassed a sadness she hadn't expected to see.

“No.” He shook his head, taking her hands in his and sighing once again. “And yes... This is limbo I think. The in-between.”

“Are you... dead?” The question was a whisper on her lips as she released her left hand and brushed her fingers lightly on his cheek. She wanted to take his sadness, if not all of it just some of it. It didn't suit him.

“Yes.”

“That's sad.” May sighed, fingers dropping from his face as she frowned. Jimmy's smile startled her as he placed his hands on her face this time around, the darkness evading his eyes.

“No, no please don't frown. You're here now, it's not sad anymore.” The tears tumbled from her eyes before she could stop them and Jimmy surprised her by leaning in and desperately trying to kiss them away. His lips stumbled over her cheeks, over her closed eyes, brushing over her nose, along her jaw, and finally on her lips. Feather soft; her stomach fluttered at each light touch.

“Breakfast!” His proclamation startled her into a fit of laughter as he continued to place soft kisses as he tried to rise. She followed him from the room, forgetting the darkness that lay in the corners.
xXx
“It's been three weeks man, you need to get out of this room. I'm surprised Dan even lets you take this much work off without firing you.” He grimaced, knowing what his friend was saying was truth. He didn't want to leave her, not if she was going to wake. He couldn't fathom her eyes opening and him not being the first thing she saw.

She'd be scared.

“Come on. She'll be fine.” He looked to his friend with a small hope that he would win this battle but the look said it all. Grabbing is coat, he leaned in and placed a small his on her forehead before leaving May all alone.
xXx
“Do you miss being alive?” Questions seemed to come so much easier, as did answers. May tucked a flower in her hair, leaning back into Jimmy's chest as his lean tattooed arms encircled her. She tilted her head back so she could watch his face.

“I miss my friends. That's really the only thing I miss. It's hard not seeing them daily.” She didn't have the words to express her sorrow for him as he stared into the vast emptiness of their new found home. She wiggled from his arms, turning herself around and studying him carefully. He stared into her eyes as she did his, fingers lightly trailing over his brows, running over his nose, thumb brushing over his lips.

“What are you doing?” His voice was deeper, huskier than she recalled; it was a dark whisper of it's usual tamber.

“I'm putting you in my memory. I couldn't stand to forget you.” He helped her reposition so she was straddling him, sitting in his lap. Easily he laid back, smiling up at her as she hovered over him, hand on either side of his head, fingers disappearing into the flowers.

“You're beautiful.” The blush rose on her cheeks and he chuckled, running a thumb over the red of her flesh. She sighed, eyes slipping shut at the feeling. Slowly she lowered herself, pressing cheek to his chest as his heartbeat lulled her into a peaceful slumber.
xXx
“May wake up, there's something...” Jimmy's voice was distressed, which caused her to rise quickly. She fumbled off of him but he quickly pulled her back into his lap, arms latching tightly around her. The light that surrounded was slowly fading in the distance, a darkness she could feel swallowing it up.

Jimmy rose quickly, pulling her with him as he headed towards the house. She stumbled along side, trying desperately to look at the change but he was making it difficult. With the door closed he gasped for air, letting her go and turning to lock the locks that started to appear as he reached for them.

“What is it Jimmy?”

“It's... it's nothing...”

“Don't lie to me.” He sighed deeply, running fingers through his tousled hair. He turned, leaning back on the door, eyes defeated and towards the ground. She moved forward, dipping down to look into his oceans. He looked up and she brushed fingers over his cheeks, giving him a small smile as she pressed her entire body against him.

His fingers slipped to her waist, sliding to the hem of her shirt as his lips descended on hers. She felt warmth, anxiety, pleasure, and desire as he tugged her shirt away and backed her up into the living room. The changing outside vanished from though as he kissed every inch of her there on the living room floor, fingers tracing his path.

She wiggled under his scoring hot flesh, trying desperately to have every inch of him touching every inch of her. She needed to feel him, to taste him, to breathe him in. Her desperation was present, his own matching as he shifted his hands all over her, never finding it enough.

She could feel the swell inside her as he devoured every inch of her flesh. She traced his tattoos with both her kisses and tongue, relishing in the fantasy she had been dreaming of since arrival. Each sigh, each kiss, each moan, each groan... she felt more and more alive. He reminded her every second on how beautiful she was, kissing away her tears as she pleaded for him to touch her.
xXx
“They said this was the last chance mom. I wouldn't of called you if it...” The air caught in his throat as he could see the tears welling up in his mothers eyes. She nodded, pulling her son in and holding him close. The pain of leaving him to this, of not doing what she should have done earlier mounted up inside her.

Their eyes together moved towards the glass as they watched the nurse stick the IV with a syringe, pouring the new confound testing drug into May's blood stream.
xXx
“I don't want to leave you Jimmy.” May tucked herself into the crook of his arm, spreading her fingers out over his naked chest. His arms were secure around her, the pounding of rain outside going unnoticed. She wasn't sure what had brought on the statement but it seemed to fit perfectly; his steady heart beat stuttered in her ear.

“You'll have to choose eventually.” His voice cracked. She glanced up, noticing the smile on his lips, the darkness in his eyes. She had hoped that the darkness would have left; somewhere deep inside she had hoped some of it had transferred to her.

“What do you mean I have to choose?” He didn't have to tell her though, she already knew. The truth of it all was always staring her in the face but she wanted to ignore it. She swallowed hard, the sadness she had been trying to put away creeping up on her quickly. “I don't want to leave you.”

“Do you want to live May?”

“Not without you.”
xXx
The blinding light returned all over again but this time it came with pain. May felt the scream in her throat as her world turned upside down. She gasped for air, her lungs raw to the substance entering them.

Her eyes quivered open, trying to bat away the light with each flutter. It was slowly vanishing, blotches and shapes taking form as she stared bewildered at the figures around her. She tried to comprehend, tried to understand as her mind raced over and over what she was sure had been real just moments ago.

Jimmy... his name seemed so vacant in her mind, so lost on her tongue but she knew it. Yes, she knew it.

“May?” She recognized that voice. Her eyes fluttered again, the shape hovering over her slowly taking form. She tried to call out her brother's name, tried to let him know she could hear him, she could see him, but her throat was too raw. But he knew, she could see it in his eyes, he knew.

The smell of flowers wafted around her as she looked around bewildered, trying to figure out once again, where she was.
