Chapter 8

I woke up my head laying on the kitchen table. I moaned, wiping the small amount of drool off of my face.
I looked down at the project I still needed to paint. Then, I thought back to last night.

Taking a deep breath I knocked on Megan's door, "Come in." She said, then mumbled something.
I turned the door knob and walked in on Johnny and Megan in a deep conversation, he whispered something in her ear that made her giggle then tucked a stray piece of her brown hair behind the same ear.
She looked up, seeing me and blushed, "Hey Devon, what's up?" She scooted slightly away from Johnny and placed her hands in her lap.
I gave Johnny a look and jerked my head towards the door. A signal that he could leave now. He blushed and mumbled something to Megan before giving me a slight nod and walking out the door, closing it behind him softly.
"I know what you're going to say and I understand where you're coming from, Dev." She and I both cringed at the use of my shortened name, "Sorry." She rubbed her hands on her jeans and looked at me, "I know you think you saw Bryan, Devon, but I don't think you really did, I think that you let your bad memories get the best of you. I know you're scared," She sighed and placed a hand on mine, I tried so hard not to cringe at the contact, "but there's nothing to be afraid of anymore. You don't have to pretend you have no feelings to be able to live. I know he hurt you Devon. No, I didn't tell the guys about him beating you."
I gave a little sigh of relief, "I felt him, Megan." I said, stubbornly, rubbing my hand across my face and through my hair.
"No, you didn't." She said gently, "Devon, I love you so much, you're my best friend, my sister. I know who you are. You let things get to you and then you bottle your emotions up inside of you. One day, that bottle is going to burst and you're going to be nothing but a pile of anguish."
I felt the tears in the backs of my eyes stinging, threatening to fall. I placed my face in my hands and let out a soft groan.
She was right, I let things get to me, I push people away and soon I wasn't going to be able to function anymore, "I guess you're right." I mumbled out stubbornly, hating to admit that I was wrong, "If he's dead then there's no way I could have seen him." I crossed my arms and looked at her, a pout on my face.
She gave me a small smile, "But aren't you happy that he wasn't actually there?" She asked, rubbing my back.
I gave an 'Are you dumb?' look, "Yeah, I am so happy that I sounded like a complete lunatic to the police today..er...yesterday."
"Well, other than that of course." She laughed and wrapped an arm around my shoulder.
I sighed and shakily let myself fall against her and hug her back, "Why do you always have to be the smart one?" I asked, furrowing my eyebrows playfully.
She chuckled lightly and laid her head on mine, "I'm just that awesome."
