Not only your burden to bear

Brian’s POV
Matt was pacing the hall, keeping his ears open to a car arriving at the mansion, I, on the other hand, was trying to keep my cool, trying to keep from freaking out, trying to just be angry at Arin for letting this happen to Jacky. How could he have put her into danger?! But the largest part of me was trying to hide the fact that I was worried to death about Jacky, about my…. Girlfriend? Damn, I should have gone myself, wherever they headed this morning.

It had been 10 minutes ago since Arin had called that they had tried to take Jacky away. Matt had turned quiet, and we all knew him well enough to know that was never a good thing. He would erupt at one time, and by the look on his face, that wouldn’t take long anymore. Good. Arin needed to know that this was not acceptable, that this was the worst situation he could have gotten into, he could kiss ever being a bodyguard goodbye after today.
“What the fuck is going on?” Zack came jogging down the stairs, Johnny hot on his heels.
“Arin got Jacky into trouble” I groaned
“What?! He got her pregnant?” Johnny chuckled.
I gave him an annoyed look and smacked the back of his head “No jokes dipshit! One of those guys found her, they tried to take her, don’t know any details yet.”
“Shit” Johny and Zack both got worried looks on their faces.
“This is getting out of hand, we need to do something” Johnny replied
“I know, we should-“ I stopped mid-sentence by the sound of an arriving car

A few large steps made me reach the door a split second before Matt did and I quickly opened it, just in time to see the car come to a halt in front of the house. Matt’s face looked like a thunderstorm waiting to happen, and I saw him dart forward the minute the doors opened. But I was oblivious to everything that happened in that corner, I had only one goal, I ran around the car and got a hold of Jacky who just got out of the car.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” I rushed to pull her close and linger in the feeling of having her safe in my arms.
“Brian, I’m fine” I heard her sigh “I’m just a little shaken up, that’s all”
I held her away from my body a little and looked at her, searching for scraps, scratches or wounds. I turned her in my hands, trying to find if she was hurt anywhere. When I was satisfied that there indeed was nothing wrong with her, I put my hands around her face and stared at her closely.
“Don’t ever do that again, don’t ever go anywhere without me, don’t ever-“ I stopped my whispering and just pulled her close to me, letting my hands go over her back in comfort.

A sob broke the moment and I realized she had started crying. Apparently it finally got through to her what happened, I wanted to kick Arin’s ass for making her feel like this, for putting her into danger.
“I was so scared Brian, I didn’t know what to do” she whispered in between sobs.
It broke my heart to see her like this and I bend down to kiss all her pain away. Just before I reached her lips, I heard Arin’s apologizing cry.
“Matt, I’m sorry!”
Suddenly I realized I couldn’t do this here, I couldn’t be this affectionate with her, or at least nothing that would even give an idea of more than comfort. How would I handle Joe if this had happened to her? Shit, I wouldn’t and this was different. Ah fuck, if someone would think something of it, it would be their problem.
Still trying to handle it a little subtle I pulled Jacky close again, the scent of her hair entering my nose. I closed my eyes for a bit, happy to have her with me. I looked up and found Matt’s eyes, one brow cocked.
“She is upset Matt, I think we’d better go inside” I replied to his look.

Matt turned around and grabbed Arin by his elbow and walked straight to his office, looking over his shoulder, making sure we followed. Johnny and Zack walked after us, but Matt stopped them at the door
“Not you. I will talk to Brian, Arin and Jacky alone. We will discuss everything else later”
I stood in the middle of the office, watching the other two guys turn away from the office.

“Sit down!” Matt barked to the three of us. I looked over at Joe, who sat up straight, trying to figure out what was going on.
“Joe. Get out” Matt lowered his voice, but it was still dripping with anger.
“What?! No, I’m working” She replied annoyed.
“Work anywhere else, I need my office!”
“It’s my office too, and I’m not leaving!” Joe had stood up now and her eyes were shooting fire.
Matt stepped to meet her halfway the office and towered over her “Don’t test me Joe, I’m warning you, you are not going to like the person you are going to find there”
They got caught up in a staring contest until Joe backed up, grabbed her laptop and cell phone. She muttered “Ass” under her breath and headed out of the door, slamming it shut behind her.

I stared at the door, as Jacky softly sobbed next to me, I turned to look at Arin, who was staring at his hands. I avoided Matt’s eyes, because I knew what was going to come, and I didn’t want to be the one who started it.
Matt sat down, but got up again, not able to contain the anger. Arin looked up, big mistake buddy, big mistake.

“WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING! I TRUSTED YOU ARIN! YOU BROUGHT HER IN DANGER! THE ONLY THING I TOLD YOU TO DO! AND YOU FAILED!”

Matt’s POV
“I CANT FREAKING BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE THAT STUPID ARIN! I TRUSTED YOU!” I couldn’t keep my voice down, could only think of the moment I lost Joe on the airport, the ice cold fear that froze my veins, realizing she was taken, right in front of my nose.
And now, it nearly happened again...
I saw Arin flinch when I started yelling, and saw the split lip, a little blood on his shirt and his knuckles were red.
He had to fight apparently, and I was glad that we took the time to give him fighting lessons in different kind of arts when Arin joined us.
“I know...” Arin said quietly his head hanging low, but he didn’t seem to realize what had been at stake.
“YOU KNOW? YOU FREAKING KNOW? I DONT THINK SO! Arin, do you have any idea what could have happened when they got their hold on Jacky? Do you have any idea what they would have done to her?” I asked him, my voice getting lower with my anger.
“I.. No..” Arin began but I held my hand up. “GOD DAMN IT...” I didn’t even want to think about what could have happened.

I looked at Brian, his arm was around Jacky’s shoulders, he held her close, and I frowned a little. Maybe she was feeling safer with her original bodyguard at her side?
Why did I let her leave without Brian, fuck this was as much mine fault as Arin...
I let him talk me into this...
“Damn, Arin... How could this happen, how could you leave her alone? HOW?” I yelled again, didn’t really know where to put my anger.
“It wasn’t his fault.” Jacky spoke up suddenly and my, Brian and Arin’s head snapped towards her.
“What?” I asked and Arin shook his head at her “Don’t... Jacky... please.”
“It wasn’t his fault.” Jacky repeated, meeting my eyes but I shook my head and I saw Brian leaning towards her.
“When you get nearly kidnapped and hurt, it is his freaking fault, Jacky. He was responsible for you. He took the responsibility, so he will be the one to blame.” Brian snapped and she shook her head “But-” Jacky began again but this time I shook my head and motioned towards the door.
“Brian bring Jacky to her room. Jacky, you calm down, and relax a little. Everything will be fine, I will talk to Arin about this alone.” I said and tried to let my voice sound a little softer than I felt.
I didn’t want to upset Jacky even more, I saw Jacky wanting to say something, but Brian shook his head at her.
She got up and leaned to Arin “I’m sorry.” She mumbled into the hug she shared with Arin and then left together with Brian and I made sure the door was shut when they left.

“NOW, I WANT TO HEAR EVERYTHING!” I raised my voice again.
“Matt, listen.. I am really sorry. I never meant for this to happen. I was never far away from her, really. There was just this one moment... I lost track of her.. I swear this will never happen again...” Arin rushed out and I shook my head.
“You are right, this will never happen again, you know why? Because you will never get on such a mission again. You will keep to your job behind the desk and in the mansion... I will never let you talk me into this again... this is as much my fault as it is yours... I should have known better...” I shook my head being disappointed, not only at Arin... but at the whole situation, whenever we just thought everything was working out good, we got such a reminder, that it wasn’t good at all.
“Now, tell me how it all came to this.” I asked and Arin started to tell me what this whole day was about and how the guy approached Jacky and tried to drag her out of the room, how Arin had fought with him and got the help of Jacky’s friend Dean.
I sighed at the end and looked at Arin “Get your face and knuckles cleaned up, kid.” I opened the door and send him outside, seeing Joe standing in the kitchen, her eyes met mine, she shook her head at me and approached Arin, who pulled the first aid kit out.
I walked into the corridor having a look on them. Arin sat down on one of the chairs, while Joe nursed his wounds and spoke to him softly.

When they were done I saw Arin walking towards his room and Joe walking towards me.
“Can I now get in YOUR office?” She asked not really looking at me.
“Yes, go ahead.” I replied and felt exhausted as hell.
She walked past me and I followed her into the room, but Joe didn’t go behind her desk, she waited for me to walk inside and closed the door.
She approached me and pushed me towards my desk, I nearly fell into my chair and frowned at her.
She surprised me and sat down opposite of me, leaning on my desk, looking at me with a frown, but didn’t say a thing.

I gave up and took her hand in mine, tugging until she sat in my lap.
“I’m sorry, Joe... I didn’t mean to yell at you earlier... I just... it was a serious situation.” I sighed and put my head into the crook of her neck and shoulder.

Reluctantly she put her hand up and let her fingers run through my hair and I enjoyed to feel her soft hands on me, after all of the events from before, I needed her touch, needed to feel her...
“What are you thinking, Joe?” I asked her but she didn’t reply just kept on stroking me.
“Josephine?” I asked again and she sighed.
“I don’t think you want to hear it... but... I think you were too hard on Arin. I don’t know what really happened today, but I bet Arin did his best, and that he never wanted to get my sister into any kind of trouble or dangerous situation. He even saved her, Matt... he got hurt doing that. Remember how you felt when they almost took me.” Joe finished and I buried my head in Joe’s hair inhaling her scent and felt better right away.
“What do you think I should do?” I asked and it felt weird, to ask someone else what I should be doing, normally I was the one to decide, alone.
“Calm down a little... and then talk to him again... I thought you guys were a team and you should handle it as one.” Joe finished.
“Thank you.” I looked up to her and pecked her lips, this was really enough action for one day, maybe a good night’s sleep would help me figure out how to handle the situation.
