She's Only Happy When She's Crying

GRACE

I couldn't believe that bitch. Are you fucking kidding me?! After all of the fucking bullshit she spit to me about never letting a man lay his hands on her, after all of the fucking times that I heard her scoff and watched her roll her eyes whenever a woman would stay with an abusive boyfriend in a news story or on a movie. I saw the fear in her eyes. I saw the destruction that her soul was drowning in, and I was sure that she was brainwashed by that piece of shit.

As much as I didn't want to forgive her for sneaking out to run back to him, I couldn't hate her. I couldn't help but want to protect her and bring her home. I'd take her ass back to Florida if I had to. She was my sister. My best friend. I wouldn't abandon her now.

I watched as the guys buzzed around the living room, figuring out a game plan on what to do about this. There was no telling what kind of shape Carinna would be in when we got to her, and there was no telling what Matt would do if we busted into his house, demanding for him to let her go.

Zack was standing at the kitchen counter with Gavin and Evan, explaining everything he knew about Matt's house and what their schedule looked like for the next couple of weeks. It sounded like we were planning a black ops mission...a fucking horrible rendition of Call of Duty.

Zachary was sitting in the arm chair with his back to the kitchen, still refusing to talk to Zack. I knew shit would hit the fan eventually about whatever had gone down between Zack and Lana, but this was not the time nor the place for them to hash that shit out. Besides, Lana seemed perfectly fine.

Actually, she seemed a little too fine for my liking.

I glanced over to the couch where Lana was sitting, texting on her phone and seemingly oblivious to the chaos that was unfolding around her. Her thumbs blazed across the screen, biting her lip gently and looking a little nervous. I frowned, my eyes narrowing, and I moved across the room to sit next to her. When I sat down, she gasped, quickly locking her phone to disguise whatever she'd been doing, and looked over at me with a bright smile.

"Hey," she breathed, "you scared me. What's up?" I scanned her face and searched her eyes. "We're still looking for Carr, if you haven't noticed."

She frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?" I had apparently offended her, but right now, I didn't give a shit. She hadn't said two words since she had arrived with the guys, and didn't seem the slightest bit worried about Zack being in the house or Carinna missing.

"It means exactly what it sounds like, Lana. What's going on with you? Carinna is missing. Probably back over at that house with that psychotic, abusive asshole. Ringing any bells or am I fucking keeping you from something?" I asked her, not giving a shit if I was coming off a little rude or sounding like I was accusing her...because that was EXACTLY what I was doing.

"What the fuck is your problem, Grace?" She asked, slipping her phone in her pocket. Don't think that didn't fucking bother me, because I had a strange feeling that whoever she was texting had something to do with why she didn't seem concerned at all.

I stood up, and I prevented her from following my pushing her back down on the couch. I felt Zachary's looming presence behind me and felt him grab my arms before I could launch myself at her. I didn't trust that glint in her eyes, and I didn't like the way she hadn't been worried about Carinna's situation at all since she'd been living with Matt.

"Grace, what the fuck? Calm down," Gavin said softly, stepping up to put himself between me and Lana.

"She's hiding something...she knows something about this bullshit!" I spat, struggling against Zachary. "LET ME FUCKING GO!" I tried to kick him and he easily side stepped me. Ethan came up next to him and shook his head.

"What do you mean? Why would Lana keep something from us about this? She cares about Carinna just as much as we do," he tried to reason softly, looking between my writhing form and her hunched up one on the couch.

"Check her fucking phone!" I screeched, trying to dig my nails into Zachary's arm. Zack stood across the room, watching Lana with narrowed eyes, but Gavin shook his head. "Grace, chill the fuck out. She's on our side!"

ZACKY

"Wait a minute, she might be right about something." I interrupted, moving forwards and placing my hand out. "Give me your phone, Lana," I said, staring into her frightened eyes. Why in the world would she be scared about anything unless she was hiding something from us?

She scoffed, glaring at her brother over Grace's shoulder. "Tell him to fuck off, Zachary! I don't have to give you shit!" She said through gritted teeth, turning her attention back to me. I narrowed my eyes and leaned forward, grabbing her wrist gently but firmly to pull her up off the couch.

Ethan went to move in, trying to come to Lana's aid, but I had snatched the phone out of her pocket and dropped her back on the couch before he needed to do anything. She yelped, attempting to rocket herself back up to me to grab her phone, but I turned my back to her and slid my finger across the slide lock at the bottom of her screen. No one moved as I opened up her most recent text message. No one moved as I turned slowly, pivoting on my heel, to burn holes through her flesh with the glare I was shooting her. No one spoke as I stepped forward, placing the phone in front of Zachary. He released Grace, as we all huddled around the phone.

Before anyone could stop her, Grace launched herself at Lana with an intent to kill, dragging her to the floor by her bright coral hair and landing fist after fist into her pretty face before Gavin dragged her back. No one scolded her. No one attempted to help Lana pick herself up off the floor.

I turned back to the phone as a new message came in, my blood running cold and my vision clouding to red.

You did great, baby. No one has to know anything. Carinna's going to get what she fucking deserves, and you'll get what I promised. I love you. - Matt.

Notes

Okay, so this one is super short, I know. But it's a filler to set up of the unfolding drama in the next one.
