Two Worlds
An Epic Waste Of Time
I watched as the sun lit up the room and shone the people that slept soundly in their beds. Sometimes I wish I could sleep like them but I know I won't be able too. I pulled myself from the smothering bed trying to be as quiet as possible but I hit a weak place in the floor and it creaked loudly. I cursed myself inside my head for forgetting about that fucking thing.
"Vi? What are you doing?"
"I'm fixing to go and see Kalico. Since you're up you can come with me." I said smiling at Brandy. She was a lively person when she woke up and I don't see how. Especially whay she went through. She grabbed some clothes from her bag that always sat beside her bed and went into the bathroom to change. As I was putting on my shoes, she came out fully dressed and ready to go. We left our room quietly and crept down the halls and to the room Kalico shared with 4 other girls. I pushed open the door and seen her bed was empty but I knew where I would find her.
"She's not in there?"
"No she's probably outside like every morning. I really don't know why we keep coming over here." I said laughing and we left the upstairs. The kitchen area was busy with the staff getting ready to prepare breakfast but I never eat the food here. I know this might sound a little weird but I never cared much for breakfast food anymore. Now I have this weird and wacky obsession with eating sunflower seeds for breakfast. Most of the other kids around here try to bum some off of me but I always tell them to fuck off and go buy their own.
I opened the doors to the front of the building letting in the warm rays of sunshine and the salty air brush over my face as the wind lightly blew. Brandy and I made our way across the yard and over to that huge Oak tree that sat in the furtherest corner of the building and it always provided the best shade on the hottest days of the summer. As we got closer to the tree, I spotted Kalico with her sketch pad.
"Hey Kali." I said plopping down next to her along with Brandy.
"Hey guys. What are you doing up so early?"
"Kali you know I never sleep...much. I accidently woke up Brandy with that damn squeaky floor in our room." I said pulling my sunflower seeds from the pocket of my dark jeans.
"You don't even need a squeaky floor to wake me up." We all laughed and I almost choked on a sunflower seed. I filled the cap of the bottle full of the kernels and proceeding in eating them as I looked out over the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and while Kalico showed Brandy the picture she was drawing. I do a little bit of art but it's not as good as Kali's. Oh man she could really get into the profession of being a genuine artist. She certainly has the skills.
I finished the capful of my delicious breakfast and slipped the bottle back into my pocket before taking out my cigarettes. Yeah, I know I'm only 13 but I have my ways of getting my cigarettes and no it's nothing inappropriate either. One of the staff who used to live here in this place always give me half of his carton of smokes since he only smokes a little. I flipped the lid on my Harley-Davison Starburst lighter and spun the small wheel that ignited the flame. I puffed on the cancer stick until the tip turned a bright orange and red color before blowing the soke through my slightly parted lips.
"When are you going to quit smoking?"
"I guess when I feel like it. These damn sessions aren't relieving any of the stress." I said taking another puff.
"Oh shit! Today is Wednesday and I forgot all about those damn sessions. I really hate fucking doing that shit."
"You and me both Kali...you and me both." We all sat around talking about how shitty the day is going to go with these damn sessions and everyone in this place knows that it's nothing but an epic waste of time.
"Vi? What are you doing?"
