*~*Zacky’s POV*~*

“You have got to be fucking kidding me? Again, really?!” Matt said.

“Shhhh man. Let them sleep. They look comfy. Makes me wanna get in on that.” Johnny added.

“Fuck you Johnny.” Matt replied.

“Ow man. I was just joking. For real though, they look comfy.”

“Matt, nothing’s gonna happen. They’re asleep. I’ll be here. Go get some sleep before we gotta leave. ” Jimmy said.

I felt the bed dip a little as Jimmy must have climbed in the bed next to us. I wasn’t sure if I was dreaming or not until I felt his movements. Kamalei was holding onto my bicep around her and I felt her tighten her grasp with Jimmy moving next to her. I opened my eyes a little and looked sleepily at Jimmy.

“Sorry man.” He whispered lying on the pillow.

“It’s all good. Thanks for getting them to go.” I whispered back.

“No problem. You guys do look comfy.” He smiled.

I snuggled into her more as I looked over at the clock on the bedside table. It was already 1am. I already knew Matt was going to be one grumpy ass motherfucker when we leave and him seeing me and his sister like this is going to put him in a worse mood.

Note to self: Stay the fuck away from him in the morning.

“You guys go drinking?” I quietly asked Jimmy before he fell asleep.

“Yeah a little bit. Johnny’s idea.” He said as I nodded and let him fall asleep.

I closed my eyes again and started to drift back to sleep when Kamalei stirred in her sleep grabbing my arm more desperately, “No. Zacky don’t. Please don’t go…”

My eyes shot open again and I looked down at her shocked.

What the hell is she dreaming about? This girl has some wild dreams…

I didn’t want to wake her so I tightened my hold on her waist a little, “I’m not going anywhere unless you want me to.” I whispered in her ear.

She smiled in her sleep and rubbed my arm with her soft fingers. That on its own was enough to get me back to sleep.

“Come on Zee. Wake up.” Kamalei said gently rubbing my shoulder.

“Huh? Is it time to go already?” I asked.

“Yeah. Come on. Are you going to ride in the back with me?” she asked as she got up from where we were sleeping taking the blanket with her.

I looked down and grabbed the other blanket Jimmy had earlier, hiding my morning erection. She looked at me and I could tell she was about to laugh at me.

“Zacky boy are you having naughty thoughts?” she teased as she got her clothes from her bag.

“He better not.” Matt said from the doorway with his arms crossed.

“I’m not. I just woke up man. Shit.” I replied.

“Boy problems.” Kamalei said as she walked over to Matt giving him a kiss on the cheek before heading into the bathroom.

I rubbed the sleep from my eyes as I got up and grabbed my own clothes for today.

“You didn’t do anything did you? She’s in your shirt. Don’t lie to me Zack.” Matt asked.

“No I didn’t. We were watching movies with Brian and Kelly. Ask them. She left her sleep shirt in her other bag, so I let her borrow my shirt. She was hurting so she took some pills and crashed out. I didn’t want to wake her up. I know what you said. I’m letting her call all the shots.” I told him.

“Alright. Thank you. I’m sorry. I just worry about her.” He said.

“I know.” I replied as Kamalei came out of the bathroom.

“Matty can you help me with the tape please?” She said lifting her tank top up and handing him the tape.

I went into the bathroom and washed my face before changing my clothes. I looked in the mirror and ran my hands through my hair. I looked like a mess but it was 4am so honestly, whatever. I came out of the bathroom and Matt was trying to not hurt her as he put the tape on her ribs the way the doctor told us to.

“Zacky, can you help him please? I don’t think Matt was paying attention.” She giggled.

I took the piece he was trying to put on and laid it on her ribs gently at the correct angle. I smoothed it out with the palm of my hand before taking another stretch of tape and repeating it. She shivered lightly and goosebumps started forming on her body.

“Sorry my hands are kinda cold.” I said.

“It’s fine. Thank you Zee.” She replied as I pulled her shirt back down.

We grabbed our things that we were taking with us, locking up all of our extra stuff in the safe in the hotel room. We would be back in the day before we flew home, so we didn’t need to take everything to Hana with us. Matt put his arm around Lei’s shoulders, chatting with her as we walked out of the room and down the hall to the elevator.

“You’re riding in Mama’s truck with me.” He told her.

“I can’t ride inside the truck. I’ll get sick. The road is too windy for me. I have to sit in the back in one of the chairs.” She looked up and told him as we walked into the lobby.

“You can’t sit back there.” He said.

“Why not? I always do and Zacky will be with me. Right Zee?” she turned and asked me.

“Uh…yeah.” I answered her.

“I want to ride in the back with you guys too!” Jimmy jumped up from the couch in the lobby.

Thank God. Matt knows Jimmy is the watchful eye. Little does he know that Jimmy is also on my side too.

“Alright. As long as you ride with me.” Matt agreed.

We took our bags out and to the trucks. I jumped into the bed of Mama’s truck and Jimmy grabbed Kamalei by her hips and basically handed her to me. We set up the three beach chairs against the cab of the truck and sat. Matt and Val got into the cab as Brian and Kelly got in her truck. Johnny opted to sit inside the cab of their truck even though Kelly told him he would probably get car sick. Kelly started up her truck and Matt followed suit.

“Wait! I need something!” Kamalei yelled to Matt.

“What do you need Lei?” Val asked getting out and walking to the back.

“A blanket please? It’s gonna be cold until the sun comes up.” She asked as Val got one and handed it to her. “Thank you.”

“You guys ready?” Brian yelled from the other truck.

“Let’s go! Hana bounds!” Kamalei yelled back as Kelly pulled out of the parking lot and Matt followed.

It was about an hour and a half into our trip before things started to look new and we ventured to places we hadn’t seen yet. It was still pretty dark out but you could tell the sun was coming up soon. Kamalei sat in the middle of Jimmy and I and she was wrapped up in the blanket with one of my earphones in her ear, sharing music with me. Jimmy outstretched his arm from the side of the truck and attempted to grab some of the hanging vines and leaves as we passed closely to the mountainside. Kamalei was right, it was like a jungle and it was a windy road.
We slowly started to slow down and I leaned over the side to look ahead of us. Kelly had pulled over up ahead and Matt followed. We stopped and stood up in time to see Johnny open the door and puke all over the ground.

“Dammit Johnny! You better not have puked in here! I told you to ride in the bed of the truck!” Kelly yelled at him.

Jimmy, Kamalei, and I couldn’t help but laugh at him. Brian watched him and shook his head as he handed him a napkin when he was finished.

“Come on short shit. I’ll ride with you in Kelly Beans’ truck.” Jimmy said grabbing his chair and jumping down.

They made some space in the back of her truck and sat down. I felt a hand reach into my hoodie and jumped a little.

“Whoa at least buy me dinner.” I joked with Lei.

“Sorry. I wanted a different song.” She laughed grabbing my I-pod and unlocking it changing the song.

“Good choice.” I said as Misfits filled the earbuds.

We rode for another half an hour listening to the music before we again began to slow down. The sky was beginning to brighten up as Matt followed Kelly to a spot on the side of the tiny road. Kamalei must have known what was going on because she pulled the earbud from her ear and started to try to get up. Her ribs were still pretty sore and I stood up to help her.

“Here, let me help you.” I said as I picked her up by her waist, setting her on her feet.

Matt got out of the cab and walked to the back of the truck, “Come here. Hands up.” He said lifting her out of the truck.

I jumped down and we walked over to Kelly’s truck. I knew then what we were doing.

“Isn’t it pretty Zee?” Kamalei leaned her head against my shoulder.

“It is.” Was all I could say as we all stood around and watched the sunrise up from around the mountainside.

“Picture! We need to take a picture! It’s too pretty and this is probably the last time we will see this for a long time.” Kelly cried out as she pulled out her phone and we all huddled together.

Kamalei reached out and grabbed my arm putting it around her shoulders as her arm reached around my waist. I looked down at her and Matt had his arm around her waist as well as around Val’s shoulders. Kelly and Brian were in the same kind of position with Johnny on the other side of Brian down in the front of us. Jimmy took the first picture before Johnny took over and Jimmy bounded behind Kamalei smiling as he put his arms around me and Matt’s shoulders.

“Send them to everyone!” Kamalei said as she bounded over to Kelly to see the pictures.

“How you doing?” Jimmy whispered to me as everyone walked around to stretch.

“I’m good. Why?” I asked unsure of his meaning.

“Just checking. You look really happy. Those pictures show it.” He said opening one of the coolers and grabbing a water.

“I am. Thanks for riding with Johnny.” I told him.

“Hey, I wasn’t going to make him ride alone in the back. That’s just sad. Plus, I figured my little Lei-Lei wanted to ride with you.” He winked.

“She would have rode with you too if I went with Johnny.” I said.

“No she won’t. I bet you she won’t.” He stated.

“Watch.” I replied, “Lei, I’m going to ride with Johnny. You ride with Jimmy?”

She turned and looked at me pouting, “Awww. You don’t like riding with me Zee? I guess I can ride with big brother Jimmy.”

“See told you.” Jimmy leaned over and said quietly.

“Nah I was just playing little Lei-Lei. I want to shake short shit until he pukes again.” Jimmy yelled back out to her.

“Are you sure Jimmy? I don’t want you to think that I don’t want to ride with you too. It doesn’t really matter.” She said.

“Boo-yah.” I said quietly to him.

“Yeah little one. You ride with Zee. I want to talk to Johnny anyway. I have some ideas.” He said as he walked back over to Kelly’s truck, kissing the top of Lei’s head as he passed her.

“Let’s go guys! We have maybe another hour or two drive. Hopefully not too many tourists this early.” Kelly said as she got in her truck.

Kamalei came over to me at the side of the truck and wrapped her arms around my waist hugging me tight.

“What’s that for?” I asked her.

“Because you’re my best friend and I’m happy to get to ride with you again.” She replied smiling up at me.

“You’re so silly. I thought maybe you would want to switch it up is all.” I lied.

“Nope. I’m happy with you. Now help me up please?” she said putting her hands up as I grabbed her by her hips and lifted her up into the truck.

I climbed in and sat down next to her. I grabbed my I-pod out of my pocket and handed it to her.

“I’m done with it. I want to hear Old Hawaii again one last time. Who knows when I’ll hear the sounds of Hana again.” She said and I could hear the sadness in her voice.

I put my I-pod back in my hoodie pocket and put my arm around her shoulders, “Tell me about it all Lei.”

“All what?” she asked me.

“All of the stories from here. There has to be legends and stuff. It’s a long ride and I rather hear some cool stories about this place than music I can listen to anywhere. Tell me?” I asked her.

“Alright my Zacky boy. I’ll tell you some of the ones I know.” She said as she wrapped the blanket around the both of us.

“Thanks.” I replied as the trucks started going again and I listened to her story.

“There is a cave that we’ll take you to and it’s called Wainapanapa (Why-nah-pa-nah-pa). There was a young princess whose husband was a very cruel Chief. He became really suspicious of her and would mistreat her and beat her. One day she took one of her serving ladies with her and they found this cave. The entrance to the cave has a small pool of water and they would hide there during the day time and come out at night to get food. The chief took his men and would search for her and search for her. In the cave there are 2 small ledges across from each other and one day the princess and her serving girl were sitting on the ledges, the girl fanning the princess with a feather of royalty. The chief and his men saw the reflection of the two women in the water. The chief ordered his men to murder his wife and the serving girl. They say that their blood darkened the rocks in the cavern. The water turns red, usually in the spring, because of these tiny little shrimp that come up thru the pool of water but they say it is the blood of the slain princess.”

“Wow that’s sad. I wonder if we will get to see the water turn red. I’m glad you didn’t end up like the princess.” I said looking down thinking about it.

“I am too Zacky.” She said leaning over, resting her head on my shoulder.

“Do you know any more stories? I’d love to hear more. Any less sad?” I asked her.

“They usually end up kind of sad. I do know one that’s not as sad…” she said trailing off.

“Tell me please.” I pleaded with her.

“The legend starts with the daughter of the great god Maui, her name is Noenoe (No-eh-no-eh) and she once fell in love with a man named Kau’iki (Cow-ee-key) who was an adopted son of the menehune (Men-eh-who-ney). Menehune are said to be like dwarf sized people that were like the main builders and craftspeople in Hawaii. Kau’iki was brought to the menehune by the sea, the menehune believed that he was a blessing of the god of the sea, Kanaloa. This meant that he would one day have to return to the sea, so the love of Noenoe and Kau’iki could never be. Noenoe pleaded with her father Maui to use his magic to bring her and Kau’iki together. So although it hurt him, the god Maui turned Kau'iki into a small island off the coast of Hana and turned his daughter into a misty, gentle rain. The little island or Kau'iki, is almost always covered by a misty rain believed to be his lover Noenoe. It’s like she never leaves him.” Kamalei smiled at me.

“That’s a much happier legend. I like that one. Will you show me the island when we go by it?” I asked her.

“Of course I will. I never thought anyone would want to know any of this stuff.” She said happily.

“It’s interesting. I don’t have any legends about where I come from. At least not any that I know about. Do you know any more?” I told her.

“Yeah. Let me think…” she replied as she thought.

Kamalei told me story after story, pointing out places from the legends as we passed them, the entire way to the cabins. I was fascinated by all of it. They were simple stories of a native land that she made me feel honored to be in.

Man, am I glad I didn’t ride with Johnny instead. I never would have learned all of these cool legends of where we are. I love listening to her tell me about her home. The way the Hawaiian words roll off her tongue is so natural and…sexy. I hope she doesn’t feel too sad when we leave for California. I can really tell she loves her home, Maui. I hope we are enough to keep her happy and safe in California…
