Life According To Amber Lynn Haner

Spikeball

*Amber's POV*

Fast forward a few weeks (nothing exciting has really happened, to be quite honest), and today's the day of my big volleyball game. I've been practicing since 8am, and the match isn't till 10:30, so I'm pretty tired already.

And when I'm playing, I can't have any of my piercings in for health and safety reasons, so when Dad dropped me off this morning, we stood there for ten minutes taking out my earrings (which consisted of 4 lobe piercings (including my plugs), a tragus piercing, an industrial (I think that's the word) bar and several other piercings near the top of my ear) and then my lip studs were a treat to get out too. I had to put all my studs in my backpack so that they wouldn't get lost (or stolen, because the girls on the team seem to think that they're magpies).

-----

Come 10:15, we all took our spots on the court, with me as the server. It was only spikeball, and I was thankful. I have a pretty weak serve, so I could just throw the ball up without serving, which was pretty rad in a sense.

Id copped on to Dad and everybody sitting in the middle of the set of school bleachers, and Danny had made his way to the stairs, and sat there. I gave strict instructions to everybody to not embarrass me, or else I'll really have it in for them.

-----

Once the clock beeped at 10:30, the ref blew the whistle, and the other team served. Being at the back, I didn't get to volley it much, but I did get to hit it over the net, and if I do say so myself, it was a pretty decent hit. When I get up to the front, though, I'll be in my element.

By half time, we were ahead by six points, and now I was up the front. I was better up the front, and we just kept racking up the points, as myself and a girl called Kirsty were slightly stronger players, and we worked well as a pair. My hits were stronger in the second half, and I barely missed a shot. It was a bit of a decent achievement, in a sense.

We won that game, much to the delight of everybody else. We only had two more matches to play, and if we won those then the coach would love us forever.

-----

We did actually end up winning all of the matches that we played, and I was insanely proud. We played well, and we barely let the other teams get any points, which was good I guess. Coach was mega happy, and it was actually the first time that I've seen her smile in ages.

Once we were dismissed, Danny ran up to me to congratulate me, and we stood there hugging for ages, while I was slightly squealing and slightly struggling to stand because of how tired I was. Regardless, we were still hugging the hell out of each other, despite the fact that I was a bit of a sweaty mess. He said he didn't care, though, and that he'd still hug me if I had the plague. He had to go then, so I grabbed my stuff and joined everybody up on the bleachers, thankful that I could finally sit down.

"Where did you learn to play like that?" Kim asked, and I just shrugged.

"Just taught it, I guess." I replied, and began putting all of my earrings back in, but leaving my lip studs out until I got home.

"Your hit's pretty strong too, and you gave that girl on the other team a bloody nose!" Johnny said, and I nodded.

"She didn't hit it when she was supposed to, so it's not my fault, man."

"It's probably biased because you're my daughter, but I thought you were the best player on the team, and that blonde girl beside you wasn't half bad either." Dad spoke up, and I laughed slightly.

"I was ok I suppose, and I agree, Kirsty is a really strong player. We're good friends too, so we work well together."

"I've decided, after quite a while of deciding, that I'm starving. There's a Hard Rock Cafe about fifteen minutes away, so does anybody else want to come? Because I'm going there if you guys like it or not." Trust Zacky to think of his stomach over anything else. It's one of the many reasons that I think he's great.

"I'll agree with you on that, I haven't had anything to eat all day." I said, and everybody was a bit shocked.

"You haven't eaten all day?" Michelle asked me, clearly unhappy. I swear, she's my second mother.

"The coach said not to eat anything, because those x amount of calories will affect our playing." I said quietly, but everybody heard.

"Is that the same coach that said you couldn't have McDonald's?" Matt said, and I nodded. "That's pretty fucked up, she could do with a good-"

"Matt, just leave it." Val warned, and Matt shut up.

"I'm just going to go and get ready, I won't be too long." I grabbed my bag and went off to the changing rooms, and noticed that I was alone. Good, I thought, I'll be able to get changed faster.

-----

I'd shoved some clothes into my backpack this morning, and didn't really know what I'd put in there. I locked the door and put my clothes onto the bench, and saw that I brought a pair of dark skinny jeans, a cropped Nirvana tshirt (yes, I actually know who nirvana are, and yes, I know they have more songs than just Smells Like Teen Spirit) my black and white Vans and a long white cardigan, the same one that I wore on my date with...Ash. It brought tears to my eyes, and that ruined makeup.

Once I looked decent (and smelled better, due to having a shower there (shut up, I was desperate)) I went out to rejoin everyone, and then we all split up because we were carpooling (I think I used that phrase correctly).

With whatever way it worked, I somehow ended up in Matt's car with him, Val and the kids, and still hadn't figured out how i didnt end up in Dad's car. I mean, your first thought would be "Amber, wouldn't it have made better sense to go in your dad's car?" and you're right, it would've, but as I said, I don't know how I ended up in Matt's car.

Notes

I actually have spikeball matches next week for my school team, so this is where this inspiration came from! Then the concert will be a couple of chapters down the line, and there'll be a bit of drama for you guys (bc who doesn't love drama, right?)

The "Hard Rock Cafe" will be in the next update, as it would've been too long to add to this one

That's so sweet, thank you <3 Ive already restarted writing on a different fic, and I'm writing twenty chapters and see how it goes. If it falls apart, I'll continue this one. If it gets a better review, I'll continue it. Thanks again for the kind words though, they mean much more then you could imagine <3 xx

Noooooo you can't restart. I love this fic just the way it is. ;~; you're an amazing writer. Don't think differently. Everyone has their insecurities. I'm insecure about my writing as well, but you're amazing at writing and 100 times better than any other people whose fics I read.
