Wish You Were Here

But My Hands are Busy in the Air Saying:

I kissed Brian goodbye, and watched as he left and walked to his car. Matt had called him and asked him to pick them up from the airport. I would of gone, except that it probably would have been really awkward, and both Brian and I didn't want to explain their situation to them. Instead, I stayed behind and started to clean Brian's house. I almost felt like I lived here, because I was over here more than he was at my house.

I straightened up the living room, folding the throw and placing it back over the couch. I walked into the kitchen and put all the dishes in the dishwasher. I then walked into Brian's room, and sighed. It was the most messy and I didn't really feel comfortable enough to go through his stuff. Though, before all this happened, he was my closest guy friend. I started picking up our clothes (and no, we haven't had sex... yet), and putting them in the dirty clothes hamper. I made his bed, and put some of the books away that I had gotten out to read when a book caught my eye.

It was a black bond book, with no title and a piece of string hanging out at the bottom as his book mark. I looked around, making sure no one was looking when a wave of paranoia washed over me. I realized I was being silly and started to put the book back when something fell out of it.

It was a picture. It was all of the guys and I, so it must have been before I had met Nikki. I stood between Matt and Brian with Johnny, Zacky and Jimmy standing behind us. Johnny was standing up on his tip toes to see over Brian's shoulder. What was strange was that, Matt was laughing and looking down at me, but I was looking up at Brian, with his arm around me.

The day itself was so long ago, the memory of it is hazy. I think they were just about to go on their first tour and we had someone take the picture of us together. Jimmy had cracked a joke about Johnny not being tall enough to get into the picture and we all started to laugh. Matt looked down at me and before I looked up at him, Brian placed his arm around me. I looked at Brian and smiled, and then the camera flashed. The guy handed the camera back to Matt but Brian and I held our staring contest a few seconds after the picture. I don't know what to think about this whole situation, anymore. I quickly put the picture back in the book and put the book on the shelf, leaving the room. I sat on the couch, but I couldn't take my mind off of the picture.

Soon, I heard Brian pull up and three people got out. I panicked, not knowing what to do. I didn't really want to see Matt or Nikki, but I don't think I was ready to see Brian either. I sighed heavily, wiping my shaking hands on my jeans and put on a smile when the door opened.

“Katie?”

“In here,” I called, quickly running into the kitchen like I had been there the whole time. I pulled a glass from the cabinet and filled it with some cranberry juice. The three of them walked into the kitchen and I waved awkwardly.

“Can we talk?” Nikki asked, nodding her head towards the back sliding door. I nodded and followed her out there, leaving Matt and Brian in the kitchen. I looked back, looking at Matt's confused expression, but shot a small smile to Brian which he sent one in return.

The air was crisp, it was still a little early in the morning, so the sun had warmed up the earth yet. I pulled my cardigan around my torso a little tighter, and held my drink with both hands letting it distract me from Nikki. She seemed to be thinking over everything before she turned to me.

“I'm sorry,” she said, and I snapped my head up to look at her in bewilderment.

“What?” I furrowed my eyebrows down over my eyes. “I should be the one sorry.”

“No, I'm sorry for overreacting. Ever since I met Matt, I've always known that there was something between you guys. I was jealous and I thought that when you finally admitted your feelings he would of ran to you.”

“Are you crazy?” I asked, setting down my drink and crossing my arms. “Matt is crazy about you. He doesn't love me like that and I'm perfectly okay with that.” I looked into the kitchen through the door and smiled a little to see Brian laughing with Matt.

“Alright, I'll accept your apology if you accept mine.”

“Deal,” I stepped forward and hugged her, glad that we had made up.

“So, what's going on between you guys?” she hinted over to Brian and I couldn't control my blush. I tried to shrug innocently, but she just smirked in return. We walked over to the door and walked inside, and she went to stand next to Matt.

“Hey Mattie,” I smiled leaning into Brian's side. “How was the honeymoon?”

“Hey, listen,” he looked over at Nikki and she smiled. “I'm sorry about the other night, I started drinking and it all spilled out like word vomit.”

“No worries, it's over with.”

The rest of the day was spent with Matt and Nikki telling us all about their honeymoon and everything they did, except the nasty parts. I sat with Brian the whole time, looking at Matt and seeing if there was anything there anymore. I was glad to realized that there wasn't and there probably wasn't anything there to begin with. I just made myself believe that I loved Matt, when it's really been someone else all this time.
