Grim As Ever, I'll Gladly Take Your Soul

“Shit! I had no idea. It’ll sound really bad but I was kinda looking for my phone, sorry.” He started. I huffed and started walking away, “Hey!!” He shouted. “Where you headed? Can I give you a lift, ya know, make it up to you?”

I slowed down, considering the idea. I was exhausted from the lack of sleep and if he was a creep I could just kill him.

I turned on my heels and walked towards him, “Okay, I’ll take you up on that offer. I need to go to Huntington Beach High, it’s off Main St and—“

“Really? I used to go there! It’s a shithole!” He laughed.

I chuckled too, “That’s the one!” I walked past him and grabbed the box of donuts.

“Whoa…. Don’t eat them all..” He said rather seriously.

I sat in the passenger seat of his muscle car, “Dude, there’s like 30 donuts in here…” he sits down, “…how could I possibly eat them all?”

“I do it all the time, it’s cause their warm donuts, taste so much better.” He justifies, he turns on his car and he speeds out of the parking lot.

Music comes blaring out of the radio, I recognize the band somewhat as I pop a donut in my mouth and instantly crave another even though I already had breakfast. “You’re right.. These are delicious!” I say with a mouthful. The guy laughs and I can’t help but smile when I look at him and listen to his laugh. “Who is this?? Is it Mr. Bungle??” I question as the bassline catches my attention.

Jimmy glances at me, “Yeah.. It is, good guess. I take it you’re a fan?”

“Yup! I used to listen to them all the time, haven’t heard em in ages.”

“They would put on the best shows.”

“You’ve seen them live???” I say surprised and eat one final donut.

“Of course! Shame they broke up..”

“I’ll say.” I nodded my head and realized we were getting close to the school. I gather my bag and get ready to step out as he pulls up to the curb. “Thanks for the ride.”

I step out and see my best friend Abbi offering me one of her cigarettes in return for a light for her. I pull out my trusty Zippo, and light up our cigs.

“HEY!!” I hear from behind me. I turn around to see the guy waving me over. I walk closer to his rolled down window and bend over to see his face.

“What’s your name by the way??” He asks.

“Nix.”

“Cool, I’m Jimmy.” He says in response.

“Yeah, I know. Drummer for A7X, right?”

He nods his head slightly, surprised almost, and gets ready to say something but I cut him off.

“Thanks again for the ride…and the donuts.” I say as I take the cig from my lips. I hold up the box of donuts I stole from him and hand it to Abbi as she laughs and runs to our usual spot to hang out.

He laughs, shocked that I swiped them without his notice and I blow a kiss to him as I walked away.

I walk around the school perimeter to find Abbi sitting and snacking on the donuts. I drop my bag near by and start stuffing my face with her.

“You get a new boyfriend and didn't even tell me??” She asks, faking hurt.

“Hell ya! I’m only in it for the money though.” I quip back and she laughs. I’ve known Abbi since I got here. She was one of the first to talk to me even though rumors spread that I was some kind of freak as soon as I got here. Together we ditch school and drink our asses off on the beach. Turns out we were meant to be best friends. The similarities we have are crazy and she’s really one of the very very few that I trust besides Eryn and Pam.

“What happened?”

“Oh, he almost ran over me and I found him then he gave me a ride.” I explained.

“Then stole his donuts.” She added.

“Exactly, then stole his donuts.” I repeated. The school bell rang and after 15 minutes of trying to finish donuts, we got up and drug ourselves to class.
