Life's a Game, but it's Not Fair

Two

Reagan rolled over in her spacious bed, groaning as her alarm blared in her ears. She threw off her covers and swung her legs onto the soft carpet and padded to the bathroom.

The tiles were cool under her feet as she turned on her shower and threw her pajama shorts and tank top into her hamper. The temperature and pressure of the shower was enough to wake her up quickly. After washing, she wrapped herself in a fluffy towel and padded back into her room.

After selecting her outfit for the day, she threw on a pair of shorts and a bra and turned back into her bathroom where she blow-dried and styled her hair. She changed into her clothes and sat at her vanity to do her makeup and chose her jewelry from her box. Slipping on her shoes and grabbing her backpack she walked quietly out into the hallway.

She passed the guys rooms, careful not to wake them and walked down the grand staircase and into the immense kitchen. Kappie was up already, cleaning dishes as the coffee maker brewed next to her. She looked up and smiled as Reagan walked in.

Reagan sat up on one of the bar stools at the island, where a plate of egg whites and toast greeted her. “Busy day today?” Kappie asked, preparing her coffee in a travel mug. Reagan shrugged “just getting ready for finals and stuff and we have graduation rehearsal on Friday.” Kappie nodded and left Reagan to finish her meal.

She shoved the last of the toast in her mouth and placed the plate in the dishwasher. She grabbed her coffee cup off of the counter and picked her backpack up off the floor. She yelled goodbye to Kappie and opened the door to the garage.

She pressed the button to open the garage door and turned to the wall where all the keys were kept. As she went to grab the keys for her Audi Roadster her hand paused on a familiar key with the BMW symbol.

Zacky never left the keys to his M6 convertible in the garage. She loved her little car, but she did love the engine on the Beemer. She glanced in the direction of her car and then her uncle’s, an internal battle ensuing in her mind. “Oh fuck it,” she grumbled, grabbing the keys and turning to the beautiful piece of machinery.

The engine purred to life as she slipped on her aviator sunglasses and pressed the button to pop the top. She peeled out of the garage, hit the button for the gate to open and sped to school.

Her best friend Blair was waiting for her in the senior parking lot as she sped in. Blair’s eyes opened wide as Reagan parked and waited for the top to come back up. “How the fuck-“ she began as Reagan swung out. “Zacky left the keys on the wall.” She explained, throwing her arm behind her to lock the car, “it’s his own fault.” The first bell rung and the girls hurried to class.

As her AP History teacher droned on about the Cold War, Reagan’s phone buzzed. She glanced down quickly beneath her notebook.

“You are so dead when you get home” from Zacky

Reagan snorted and replied

“I’m so terrified. Remember I hold the keys. Next time don’t leave them hanging in the garage.”

“Reagan.” Mr. Hennessy’s voice snapped her head back up. “When exactly did the Berlin Wall fall?”

“November 9th, 1989” she said sweetly not even batting an eye. Her teacher looked baffled, certain he had caught her. He turned back to his lectures. Reagan sighed and looked out the window, willing for the day to go by faster.

Two hours later she was zooming down the PCH after a small joy ride to get an iced coffee. She turned onto her palm lined street and turned onto the driveway. The gate was open as she swung around the circular driveway towards the garage.

As the door slid up, it revealed Zacky and Jimmy standing shoulder to shoulder, their feet shoulder width apart and their arms crossed.

“None shall pass!” Jimmy cried. Reagan rolled her eyes and turned to the passenger seat and held up the box.

Jimmy’s eyes widened when he saw what was in his niece’s hands. “Dude…” he said slapping Zacky’s arm. “I want one.”

Zacky rolled his eyes “holy shit Jim, you give in to cupcakes!?” he cried.

“But they’re Sprinkles cupcakes,” Jimmy whined.

“She’s not allowed in.” Zacky said turning to face her.

“I got red velvet.” She retorted. Both their eyes widened “This one’s good,” Zacky muttered and moved out of the way.

Reagan smirked as she pulled in and shut off the engine. “Keys,” Zacky commanded and she tossed them to him. Jimmy snatched the box out of her hands “CUPCAKES!!” he cried, sprinting into the house with Zacky on his heels.
Laughing, Reagan followed them in. She pulled the double chocolate from the box and headed down the long hallway past the staircase. She stopped at the large black French doors at the end and knocked three times. She heard the response and opened the door.

Brian’s eyes warmed as his daughter stepped into his office. “Hello angel,” he said smiling as she walked to his desk and kissed her cheek. “Hi daddy,” she said smiling and placing the cupcake on his desk.

“What’s this for?” Brian asked, picking up the treat.

Reagan relayed the story to him and he chuckled. Growing up with him and his friends had definitely made his daughter a smart, stubborn girl. He wished her mother had stayed around to see her grow up. He forced the bitter thoughts from his mind as he asked her about her day.

The two stayed and chatted for a few minutes and were soon interrupted by a knock on the door. Matt peeked his head in “Sorry to bother you Gates,” he said respectfully. Brian waved his hand dismissively, signaling it was alright. “Come in Shadows,” he said. He turned to his daughter, “I’m sorry princess, I’ve been waiting for something to come in.”

Reagan nodded and stood. She smiled at Matt as she passed; he returned her smile with his dimpled one. Matt was the one of the guys she wasn’t very close with. He had joined the group only recently, almost two years ago. Reagan liked him well enough and at times even thought he was cute. She headed out to the hallway, hoping Jimmy, Zacky and Johnny hadn’t eaten all of the cupcakes yet.

Matt sat in the chair Reagan had occupied and pushed a sheet of paper towards his boss. “Tuck sent me this.” He explained as Brian read the paper, his eyebrows furrowed. “What do you think?” Brian took a deep breath as he set the paper down.

“It isn’t probable that Tuck could have made this up, but it’s still pretty vague.” He said “But all the same, we may want to up our security. I don’t want to dismiss this and wind up being sorry for it.”
