Life's a Game, but it's Not Fair

One

It wasn’t the first time Reagan had been thrown into the back of a van.

“We’ve got her!” The man who grabbed her exclaimed, jumping into the passenger seat. “Drive!” The man behind the wheel hit the gas pedal, speeding off.

“Alright muffin top.” The familiar voice cackled into her ear “I’ve got your position, the guys will be there soon.” Reagan coughed to acknowledge the message and the guy who had nabbed her turned around.

“Now we’re not going to hurt you,” he stated “but you’re going to have to call your boy Vengeance to get us more time to give them the money. I’m sure we’ll get it in almost a month and he will miss you too terribly to object.” He high fived the driver.

“Closing in” the voice, said,

“Tell me dude!” The driver exclaimed, “was it hard to grab her?”
Her captor snorted, “It was simple. She’s sitting at the table all over Vengeance. Then she grabs her Marlboro’s and walks out without any of them. You’d think that these mobsters would pay more attention to their girls.”

“Actually we do.”
Suddenly, the sound of a very loud car engine was heard behind them and the driver looked out the side view mirror, his face suddenly paled. “Uh Dan?” he asked. Dan turned to face his friend “You said grabbing her was easy right?” he nodded, “well I think it might have been a little too easy.”

At that moment the van was hit from the side. Both men started cursing as the driver, whose name was Ted Reagan learned due to Dan’s screaming, lost control. Ted hit the gas again and the van was once again hit. This time, it crashed into something. Both men ripped off their seatbelts and jumped out of the van. Reagan heard car doors opening and slamming behind them.

Suddenly, the back of the van was jerked open and Reagan was staring into the bright green eyes of Zacky. He gave her a once-over. Not sexual at all, just checking for anything wrong. “You all good pipsqueak?” he asked, climbing into the van to untie her hands. “Peachy keen Uncle Z.” she said grinning.

She heard her father call out to Zacky; “got her!” he yelled back, “nothing wrong, these guys are fucking amateurs.” She put a hand to her ear “Hi Jim all good, see you back at the house.” She laughed at the familiar whoop that followed and climbed out of the van.
Twenty feet in front of the van stood Ted and Dan, surrounded at gunpoint by Johnny, Matt and her father. Brian Haner turned at the sound of her heels and checked his daughter for any markings, seeing nothing wrong her held his gun less arm out. Reagan ran into it, Brian crushing her to his side. He placed a kiss to her temple then turned to her captors.

“ You had a year to give me the money.” He started calmly, “I added two months onto that and then you have the fucking audacity to kidnap my daughter.” At the mention of daughter, Dan’s face paled. “We thought-“ “No one cares” Johnny growled, pointing his gun.

Dan dropped to his knees “Please Master Gates,” he begged “spare us. I will do anything. I will get the money” Zacky laughed, “I think it’s a little late for that. Your actions have shown us how we will not be seeing the money anytime soon.” The guns clicked. “Princess,” her father stated, “car.”

Reagan turned and headed to the Escalade as the shots rang out. In a way, she felt sorry for the men, but her father had clearly told them what would happen if they pulled stunts like this. She leaned against the large car and waited for her father and uncles.

She pulled the pack of Marlboro Reds out of her clutch, as their footsteps got closer. “Need these?”” She asked grinning as she tossed them into the air. Her father caught them with ease and tucked them into his pocket. Zacky, Johnny and Matt all climbed in. Brian grabbed his daughter’s arm and looked her in the eyes.

“Those fuckers didn’t do anything?” he asked one more time. She shook her head, relief flooded Brian’s face. He kissed her forehead again and she climbed into the huge truck. Zacky hit the gas once the doors shut and Reagan leaned against the window, watching the light of Huntington sped by.

The minute the Escalade swung around the circular driveway of the Avenged mansion the massive front door was thrown open.

Reagan swung herself to the ground with ease and laughed as her Uncle, Jimmy Sullivan swept her into his arms. “My Rey Rey is okay kay!” He cried spinning her around. “Of course Jim you knew that.” Jimmy pouted as he set her down. “Still it’s better to actually see that my niece is okay rather than just hear it.” Reagan laughed and turned to the other person standing in the doorway, Kappie.

Kappie had been working for the Avenged “family” since Reagan was two. Kappie’s real name was Kathy, her name a result from Reagan having a tough time making the “th” sound when she was younger. Her father had come to Brian her senior year of college for a small loan for her schooling fees. Brian had given it, with ample pay back time. However, Kappie’s brother was killed in a freak car accident that left her father no way of paying Brian back.
He had no choice but to go to Brian. He explained his situation and an idea he had. His wife had died when his children were 11 and 12; Kappie had risen to the occasion in cleaning, cooking and caregiving for her younger sibling. He asked if perhaps his daughter could be sort of a housekeeper for the gang and would pay off his debt that way since she was having a hard time finding a job.

Brian respected his honesty and agreed with the request. He ordered his fellow members not to harm her or violate her in any way with harsh punishments threatened. Kappie came and cleaned and cooked for the men. Then she found out about Reagan.

Reagan’s mother had left her daughter with her ex-husband and walked out. Brian, having no clue how to raise a child, let alone a girl called his mother for help. Mrs. Haner helped when she could and Reagan spent most of her baby days at her grandparents. One day when Mrs. Haner was visiting Kappie met Reagan and she decided to stay in the mansion and raise her so she could be with her father. Kappie had been a part of Reagan’s life everyday since.

Kappie looked over Reagan and held her face in her hands. “You’re alright?” She asked nervously. Reagan nodded. Kappie sighed with relief and turned to the five men “everyone! I made mac and cheese. It’s on the island in the kitchen.” Reagan and the guys cheered and raced into the mansion. Reagan shoved her way through the large men effortlessly in her heels.

Kappie watched her employer’s eyes follow his daughter into the house. The love and devotion he had for his child was eminent in them. “You know I hate when she helps you with clients Master Gates.” She said, looking up at him.

Brian looked down at the small woman next to him and sighed in agreement “I know Kappie, it scares me every time some bastard tries to grab her. I don’t feel right until she’s with me.” With that, the two walked into the house.

Reagan sat around the table laughing and talking with her family. No matter how dysfunctional it was, it was a family and it was the best thing any girl could ask for.
