Hostage

Alicia’s POV

I woke up the next morning and still had a nightmare, seeing the face of Carl before my eyes, crouching over me.
My eyes popped open and I breathed deeply in and out, just a dream… just a bad dream. It was over everything was over.
I grabbed for my phone and saw a message.

Will be there in 10, maybe we can have breakfast before going to the hospital? Zee

I frowned and looked at the message again. Zee? Who the fuck was Zee?
I heard the doorbell and then Caroline opening the door.
“Hey Zack, you are early. I don’t even know if Alicia is up, yet.” Caroline said and I said up straight.

“Shit.. shit shit shit!” I jumped out of bed and grabbed the clothes lying around and headed to the bathroom.
“Alicia? Are you awake?” I heard a knock on my door.
“Yes, I’m in the bathroom.” I yelled back.
“Alright, I tell Zack to wait in the living room. I have an appointment at Jamie’s pediatrician. Will take some time… You have fun with Zack. We will see us this evening. Love you.”
“Thanks, tell Zack I need a moment. Love you too.” I yelled back and sighed.
“Will do, bye.” I heard Caroline walk away.
I took a quick shower and pulled some fresh clothes on, when I walked out of my guestroom I looked at the clock. It was 8:20, he wanted to pick me up by 9.
Why was he so early?

I walked into the living room and saw Zack standing in front of the family pictures.
On a huge picture wall were a lot of pictures from me and Caroline, we traveled a lot when we were younger and when Brad and Caroline married we did a lot together as three.
I smiled remembering all the evening with us two or three… and then when Jamie was born even four of us.
“Since when are you and Caroline friends?” Zack turned around and I smiled.
“Along time…. About 15 years.” I replied.
“And since when are they married?” Zack motioned to Brad and Caroline.
“5 years, I guess. But they are together way longer…” I smiled.
“Why are you here so early, Zack?” I asked him.
He shrugged his shoulders, “I brought us some breakfast I thought it would calm you down a little.”
I looked at him surprised and just realized that I really was calm, that I wasn’t already freaking out because of the thought to go to the hospital again for tests…
Zack’s early appearance had me so confused that I forgot about it.
“I can’t eat now.” I replied with a shrug. “But you can of course, come on let’s sit down.”

Zacky’s POV

“Come on, just a small croissant? Just a little bit.. you need something in your stomach.” I sat down with Alicia and she smiled at me but shook her head.
“Nope. Thanks.”
“Why not?”
“Zack, because I need to have an empty stomach when I make the tests at the hospital...”
I was about to bite off my croissant and then looked at Alicia.
“Oh shit, I haven’t thought about that. I am so sorry… and I am eating here in front of you. Shit, I am sorry.” I put the croissant back down and Alicia shook her head.
“Don’t. That’s not your problem, go ahead and eat. I don’t eat in the morning anyway…” She grabbed my bag with the croissants and put it back into my hand.
When I didn’t move my hand she laughed softly and grabbed my hand and brought it to my mouth, holding the croissant in front of my mouth, putting it directly in to my lips and gently grazing my lips with it.
“Open up. Come on…” I rolled my eyes and bite off.
“See, was that so hard?” Alicia smiled and I had to smile back.
“How did you sleep?” I asked her and saw the dark circles underneath her eyes.
“Not so good.” Alicia looked down and saw her breathe in deeply.
“Will you tell me what you dream was about?” I asked her quietly.
“I.. I..” She looked up and I saw her smile. I frowned. “Why do I have the need to tell you everything? Why do I feel like I can tell you everything?”
I smiled back and shrugged my shoulders “Ask the others I am a good listener…”
“I dream… I have nightmares… I wake up in the middle of the night. The first night I screamed and Caroline had to come and wake me. This night I had the face of one of the Abductors in front of me…” She looked deeply into my eyes and I saw some tears building up.
Damn it, I got up and pulled Alicia off her chair grabbing her into a hug.

I had no idea, why I was here so early, why I wanted to see her again, but I knew that I liked her company that she was so easy to be around with…

And after I went yesterday over to Matt’s house and wanted to see if Matt was alright, if he wanted to talk, if he needed some company but he wasn’t home.
And when I then called Brian and he told me Matt would be coming over for some kind of double date with Michelle and Val and spend the evening together I thought better as to interrupt.
I guess Matt was trying to get back into his life, maybe Val was his way to normality?

This made me even more aware that maybe Alicia needed some more friends and since I knew so much about her through the time I spent with Brad and Caroline I thought this would be a good idea.

I sighed and pulled away from Alicia, “Are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m okay. I guess I needed that. Now, finish your breakfast, we need to be on time for my tests… oh and Zack?”
She looked up “Yeah?”
“Thank you for being by my side today... and for trying to get me to other thoughts, I wasn’t this calm before going to the hospital since… ever, I guess…”

“I’m glad to help you. Now, let’s go or we will be late.”
“You are right. Let me grab my jacket and bag and we can go…”Alicia moved back to her bedroom and grabbed her things.
I walked towards the front door and waited for her.

We drove to the hospital and the further we got the more nervous Alicia behaved, the calmness seemed to be over.
We went to the reception and they told Alicia where she had to go and at which room she had to announce her arrival.

We sat in the waiting area and the nurse told us that it would take them a few minutes before Alicia would be shown to a room where all the tests would take place.
“Do you want to wait? Or would you come with me inside?” Alicia asked and she watched all the nurse and doctors walking around.
“If you want me to wait, I will wait. If you want me to come with you and tell you something to distract you I will do that… If you tell me to fuck off, I will leave… It’s up to you.” I grinned at her and she wrung her fingers.
“Mrs. Davis, please follow me to the laboratory.” The nurse said and I saw her glancing from Alicia to me and back.
Alicia stood up and looked at me with uncertainty and I waited for her decision.
