Out of Left Field

Chapter Two

Zack’s large, tattooed hand swiped through the condensation on the bathroom mirror, almost wincing at the dark circles under his eyes. He hadn’t slept much the night before. Instead he’d spent a good portion of the night tossing and turning as his mind had worked overtime thinking about the hot little waitress Scarlet, whom he hadn’t seen since the kitchen incident. Zack wouldn’t be surprised if she thought that he was just another sex obsessed man.

Yeah and when was the last time a woman wanted to fuck a man like you?the ugly part of his mind threw in its two cents, making Zack ground his back teeth together. His mind was right of course but that didn’t mean that it didn’t piss him off.

With a heavy sigh Zack tore his gaze away from the mirror and padded barefoot, dressed in only a towel into the kitchen. The dull ache in his right thigh making the limp a little more pronounced than usual. Zack’s constant reminder at how he managed to mess up his whole life.

He needed coffee – whiskey – coffee and he needed it now!

A freshly brewed, steaming hot coffee in hand Zack looked out of the picture window. He couldn’t believe his mother, of all people, managed to find a house with a miniature baseball field in the garden. Sure it wasn’t a full sized pitch but it would be great for practice. Zack closed his eyes at that thought. He didn’t know when the pain at not making it past the minor league would pass but he sure as hell wished it would hurry up. On his darkest days he thought the only reason Gena ever put up with him was to become closer to Matthew and that goes back to before the accident.

He remembers the day the surgeon told him he could never play again and he remembers the way Gena looked at him. It wasn’t a look of love or pity but something else entirely – revulsion. Mere months after that day whilst he was still in physical therapy Gena left him for his little brother and that was the first time Zack drank for the sake of getting inebriated. He’d never felt so alone and so broken. But then as the months wore on his ball buddies stopped returning his calls, his coach began feeding him bullshit promises of becoming the assistant coach, his little brother avoided him at all costs but none of that hurt as much as Gena looking at him with that cold gleam in her eyes as she told him she was fucking his brother.

Scarlet was parked outside of a large four storey boarding house on the outskirts of Sunnyville with her hand resting comfortably on the horn. She knew her Aunt Janie wouldn’t be mighty impressed with the noise nor would the soldiers that took shelter here whilst they were on leave. But Scarlet had another pick up to make and with only forty minutes before school started she didn’t have time to wait for her lazy cousin to drag his ass out of bed. When the main door opened she wound the window down and took her hand off of the horn long enough to bellow.

“Bobby Ray, get your ass out here!”

Bobby Ray Reed looked like all the Reed boys – tall, athletic build with a mop of dark brown hair and deep brown eyes. Even though it was only the first day of their senior year Bobby Ray emerged in full Falcons Baseball uniform, his mop of brown hair hidden under the matching baseball hat. Scarlet couldn’t help but laugh at her cousin. He was being a little bit presumptuous wearing last year’s uniform but she also knew that mentioning anything to him now wouldn’t make him change his outfit. After all since when hadn’t a Reed made first string on the team?

“Mornin’.” Bobby Ray muttered as he slung his gym and book bag in the foot well before hoisting himself in the ancient truck. “Momma is pissed at you.” He continued as Scarlet quickly pulled away from the boarding house.

“Well I wouldn’t have to honk if you weren’t such a lazy ass.” Scarlet grumbled concentrating on the beaten road ahead.

The drive across town to Aunt Francine’s was silent and as she glanced at her cousin her thoughts were confirmed – Bobby Ray had fallen asleep like he would every school morning. She couldn’t blame him, of course she couldn’t after all she was tired as hell. With a shake of her head Scarlet picked the twin Reed’s up, Rory and Louie who were dressed exactly the same as Bobby Ray. Once everyone was settled Scarlet once again set off but this time in the direction of school.

“How come y’all aren’t wearing your uniform?” Rory asked Scarlet breaking the silence making her shoulders slump and her eyes water.

Scarlet knew her cousin didn’t mean to upset her with his question but it had and it was always the same feeling for the last few summers. She didn’t think her fear would ever wane. The fear only she seemed to feel the moment her feet touched the pitcher’s mound. To Scarlet it felt like her lungs were made of cast iron making it harder for her to breathe, felt like her blood was pounding through her veins too fast and she can’t forget the full body sweating or the shaking and Scarlet didn’t know which was worse that or that little voice in the back of her mind whispering those awful, hurtful words.

This was the conversation that Scarlet was dreading all summer. But it would be the same conversation that she had had with the boys over the last two summers, but somehow this time it felt different. She just didn’t know why. With a heavy sigh Scarlet glanced through the rear view mirror at Rory.

“I’m not trying out.” She mumbled. She heard his sigh and could tell that he was frowning without looking at him. “You know I can’t and before you say it, practice is different. Y’all ain’t expectin’ me out on the field for a big game.” Scarlet continued but as she heard Rory take a breath she cut him off. “And this conversation is over, ya hear me Rory Ray Reed?” she’d used the same voice as her momma – the one that was final with no room for argument.

“Yes’m.” Rory muttered before slinking back into the back seat. “Y’all are staying for tryouts?” Scarlet smiled before nodding. She wouldn’t miss tryouts for the world.

Zack looked around his new classroom; the room where he’d teach Sports Medicine to his students, the main importance for this semester being prevention, acute care, rehabilitation and counseling for all of his athletes, on or off his team. And who better to teach these kids than himself – a former athlete who has been through rehabilitation, physical therapy and counseling. Not that he’d divulge so much information of his private life or his injuries. The last thing he needed to see was pity or revulsion on his students faces.

The room was like any other classroom with the exception of the various sports posters adorning the walls and a television with DVD player set up in the far corner next to his new desk. He’d already scribbled his name on the white board in bold blue letters for his first class of the morning and he’d already placed the information sheets on each of the thirty desks. Today he wasn’t planning on making the kids run laps or quite simply do whatever the fuck he wanted them to do mainly because his leg wasn’t up to anything remotely physical. No, today he was going to start with prevention of injuries, a boring but necessary task.

Zack heard the loud chatter from his first class of the day as they lined up outside of the closed door and this was the only part he was dreading – having to open the door only to have the class watch him limp back towards his desk. Zack made a mental note to leave the door open for all other classes for the rest of term. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to hide his limp forever but if he could keep people from noticing it until at least the second week that would give him enough time to become familiar with his students and also be able to get to grips with his limp. But who was he kidding he’d been limping for ten years and he still hadn’t come to terms with it.

Before his anger and bitterness could take it hold, Zack made his way slowly and unsteadily towards the door, the students chatter becoming louder with each step that he took but that soon stopped the moment he swung the door open. The students all male – which didn’t surprise him – stared for long seconds making him a little uncomfortable. He cleared his throat and licked over his dry lips as he moved to the side, unblocking the doorway.

“Morning class,” he began as he gestured for them to enter, which they did and in utter silence. “Please take a seat anywhere.” With that Zack left the door open and ambled back to his desk before perching on the edge facing the room. “I’m Coach Baker but you can call me Mister Baker, Coach or Coach Baker – whatever you prefer is okay with me.” Zack looked at the sea of nameless faces. Some he could tell were athletes and some who looked like they’d taken a wrong turn into his classroom. And to say these were high school students they sure were behaved and that was something that made Zack slightly nervous.

Did they know who he was? Don’t be silly, you’re a nobody! His mind spat at him. They’re most likely waiting for you tell them your sob tale. Zack really hated his mind – hated the fact that it spoke the truth.

Barely concealing his anguished snarl Zack snatched the attendance sheet. The room was still silent; the boys only answering when he called their names for the attendance sheet and he’d asked them to say a little about themselves and to be honest he was already getting fed up with hearing the same replies. I want to be a famous ballplayer. Not one of his students so far had said anything different and he was already near the bottom of the list and thoroughly bored.

“Reed!” Zack called out and watched three male hands shoot up. “Erm…B Reed?” and just like that he watched two hands lower.

“Bobby Ray Reed, Coach.” His slow southern drawl seemed even slower than the rest of his class, like he could only just talk. But Zack instantly put it down to either him being plain lazy or tired. They were both much of the same. Although Zack smiled as he noticed the boy’s uniform – in fact the other two were dressed exactly the same which impressed him with their commitment to the game and the team, whether he was lazy or not commitment is commitment. “I just want to make this year’s team, Coach.” Well that was a little different from Famous Ballplayer.

“Okay – L Reed?”

“Louie Ray Reed, Coach.” A deep voice answered from the back of the room and from under a Falcon’s baseball cap. “Are you in charge of the tryouts?” well this kid certainly didn’t feel like sharing something about himself.

“Yes.” It was a sharp curt yes as his eyes scanned the attendance sheet again. “R Reed?”

“Rory Ray Reed, Coach Baker.” Rory shifted in his seat briefly looking from his note book and back again, like he was deciding what to say. “I’m his twin.” He pointed to his identical twin brother, Louie. “And he can’t pitch for shit so don’t let him tell ya any different.” That made Zack laugh out loud before he remembered where he was. He cleared his throat and composed himself once again.

“No cussing in class Rory.” Zack warned before glancing back at the attendance sheet. Good Lord another Reed! Are Reed’s the only family in this town that breed? “S Reed?” Zack scanned his class but nobody had raised their hands nor had spoken up. “Rory is S Reed related to you?”

“Yes Coach.” Zack waited a few moments for Rory to elaborate but it seemed that was all he was going to say making Zack lose his patience slightly.

“Is S Reed joining us?” and as soon as the words were out of his mouth Zack noticed out of the corner of his eye a very familiar person dressed in a figure hugging lace blouse and denim shorts with cowboy boots completing the outfit. Zack didn’t want his shock to register on his face nor did he want to make a fool of himself but damn it he already had.

Scarlet was frozen in the doorway and she knew that shock and recognition showed on her face as she stared wide-eyed and open mouthed at her Hot Yankee, Zack. The same Zack who had lodged his erection between her ass cheeks just a few days before, the same Zack who had starred in her x-rated dreams. And now here he was looking as gorgeous as ever in a simple blue button down shirt and black slacks and perched on the edge of Coach Warren’s old desk with his name scrawled in bold blue letters behind him.

“Scarlet Sissy Reed, Mister Baker.” Scarlet almost whispered as she felt heat crawling up her throat before it settled on her cheeks. “I don’t want to be a ballplayer or be on this year’s team, I just want to learn how to take care of the injured athletes.” She admitted as she took a seat next to Rory at the back of the classroom.

Scarlet knew she had shocked her teacher with her appearance in the classroom and her words but the longer Zack stared at her without saying a word the more Scarlet wanted to bolt from the room and her cousin knew as well. So it didn’t surprise her when she felt Rory’s hand clamp down on her shoulder keeping her in place. The moment she had taken her seat Scarlet had averted her gaze from Zack’s intense gaze but that didn’t stop her belly muscles clenching in the way only he made them.

“Well it’s very nice of you to show up Miss Reed.” Zack spoke quietly, setting the attendance sheet beside him on the desk. “Alright class please read through the sheets and begin writing the five hundred word essay on Prevention of Injury.” Zack ordered the students.

He’d planned on walking them through the sheet, talk about every possibility that might result in an injury but the moment Scarlet had called him Mister Baker the only thing that was floating around his head was the fact that his cock had grown considerably and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it, except sit behind his desk and hide the large bulge.

The lesson had gone painfully slow for Zack and his cock hadn’t deflated since the moment Scarlet had walked into his room. He’d planned on letting her leave without a single word from him but the moment he saw her packing her bag the words were out of his mouth before he could stop them.

“Miss Reed, please stay behind.” The rest of the class dispersed with a few sniggers in Scarlet’s direction. “Please shut the door.” He asked quietly as he really didn’t trust his leg at the moment. It had been throbbing painfully so since he rolled out of bed this morning, the stifling heat was making his muscle swell and he wasn’t sure how long he could last walking on it. Zack waited for Scarlet to return to his desk and with the door firmly shut he didn’t have to worry about anybody hearing this conversation. This conversation he really didn’t want to have but he knew that he had to have answers. “Why didn’t you tell me?” he couldn’t look at her so he opted to stare at his tattooed fingers.

“I’m sorry.” Scarlet apologized her gaze trained on the floor. “I should of but I didn’t expect you to be the new teacher nor did I think that y’all was old enough to be a teacher.” She rambled as she shuffled her feet against the linoleum floor.

She didn’t think he was old enough to be a teacher? Well he certainly thought she was old enough not to be a student! God, he really was stupid!

“How old are you Scarlet?” Zack knew she was young but he’d placed her in her very early twenties and now he needed to know exactly how old she was, especially since she’d been in all of his fantasies since that first day he’d met her.

“Seventeen.” Was the mumbled reply she gave.

To stop himself from cussing like a sailor Zack pinched the bridge of his nose and squeezed his eyes closed as he let her age sink through his sometimes thick skull. He was appalled with himself, so much so that he was wondering if he could transfer her to another class – cheer squad maybe? He really didn’t think that he could cope with her being in his class looking and smelling so delicious. But the main part of his brain wouldn’t let him do that. The main part of his brain wanted to be selfish and keep her in his class.

“Alright.” He said after a long moment of pure silence. “Nobody and I mean nobody Scarlet can find out what happened the other day. Can you promise me that?” Zack continued in a harsh whisper as he let his eyes travel to her downcast ones.

He really did like her shyness and with that his cock seemed to swell further.
Scarlet didn’t speak but she nodded and without further word from himself she bolted out of his room leaving the door wide open. But Zack didn’t have time to mull over her reaction as his next class were already filing in, some of them chatting and others curiously glancing at him.

Damn this is going to be a long year!

The late afternoon sun burnt a lovely shade of orange whilst light white clouds danced over the crystal blue sky. Scarlet smiled dreamily as she leaned back on her elbows letting the sun dance over her heated skin as she ignored the excited shouts of encouragement from the boys who were lined up on the baseball field warming up with swinging a few rounds or throwing a few balls. Her three cousins were amongst the boys warming up and if anyone asked why she was here she had the perfect reason. Her deep brown eyed gaze flicked over the individual groups of boys from a range of different years all clustered with boys of the same age. Her gaze settled on the one person she had been seeking out.

Zack put a large hand atop of a small kid – Hayden Moore’s shoulder immediately halting the kids swing. A good thing too as Zack was sure he’d have done himself an injury with the way he was holding the bat.

“Hold it like this.” Zack spoke whilst showing him how to hold the bat correctly. “Otherwise you’ll be in my office receiving pain meds and an ice pack before tryouts has even started.” He continued with a smile and handing the bat over again.

“Coach!” At the bellow Zack turned his head to the right focusing on Louie Reed but not before catching the sight of Scarlet watching him. “Can I tryout now?” Louie continued to bellow across the field from first base.

With a curt nod Zack clapped Hayden on the back, almost pushing him over before spinning on his heel and strode across the field towards the shimmering beauty that is Scarlet. The way the sun glinted off of those sculpted thighs made his balls tighten with lust.

Scarlet’s pulse spiked as she watched Coach Baker stride purposefully towards her with an indecipherable glint in his eyes. She couldn’t help but shy away from his gaze nor could she stop her palms from growing clammy as the sinfully wicked thoughts surfaced. She could feel the heat crawling up from her suddenly heaving chest until it settled firmly in her cheeks. But in the last second Coach Baker veered off to her left. She couldn’t stop the sinking feeling like rocks had taken residency in the pit of her stomach nor could she stop the frown from gracing her lips. But what exactly did she expect – on the baseball field – on the school grounds? She wanted to be passionately kissed and to feel the cold steel from his piercings touching her lips. She wanted him to claim her, plain and simple. But it wasn’t plain and certainly wasn’t simple – he was her teacher!

“Hey heifer.” Scarlet’s eldest cousin Darla Mae greeted as she flopped down beside her. “What ya lookin’ so glum for shug?”

Darla Mae was the spitting image of Scarlet, they both had the long dark hair and deep brown eyes but Darla Mae had the deepest dimples she’d ever seen and where Scarlet lacked in the breast department her cousin was a little more stacked. Anyone who looked at the Reed family would notice the resemblance but what did everyone except when four sisters married four brothers.

“Nothin’.” Scarlet shrugged one shoulder. “Just sad that I can’t tryout is all.” She continued, which wasn’t a complete lie. Darla Mae’s brown eyes softened as she wrapped a slender arm around her shoulders before looking out onto the field at her brother, Bobby Ray.

This was what Scarlet liked about her eldest cousin; she knew when you wanted to talk and when you didn’t. But she wasn’t a big talker which helped. To anybody else Darla Mae seemed cold and detached but she wasn’t, far from it. And with her daddy being Colonel Butch Reed and growing up with him leaving every few months, Darla Mae had learnt not to show much of her emotions.

Zack was perched on the edge of the bench in the players pit with a clipboard and red marker pen in hand trying to concentrate on the students who had attended the tryouts. But his perverted mind kept roaming back to thoughts of Scarlet lay under the sun and that sexy little blush of hers. Thoughts of his large body covering hers as his hands skimmed along her skin and of how her moans of pleasure would sound against the shell of his ear. He needed to get his mind out of the gutter, he needed to concentrate on the task at hand but he couldn’t. And after being sat in the same uncomfortable position for a little over an hour he’d had enough. He’d just draft up the team when he was on his own without the distractions but he knew that even though Scarlet wouldn’t be within reach she’d still be a distraction.

“Alright guys bring it in!” Zack hollered from his spot and the students came running all red faced and sweaty. “The teams will be posted by the end of the week.”

“Do y’all accept bri-“

“No I don’t accept bribes.” Zack chuckled at Louie Reed. Zack had to hand it to the teenager; he really was committed to the Falcons. “Okay guys pack it up and I’ll see you all tomorrow.” With that Zack stood and hobbled out to the parking lot without a second glance in Scarlet’s direction.

For the love of Vengence please please please update soon! This story is one of the most descriptive, all enveloping stories I have found. It just sucks me in, like I'm actually there, and I love it! I may not comment all the time, due to technical issues, but rest assured that I am reading. So please update! I adore this story! And honestly due to the fact that you are only using names and somewhat desciptions of the guys in the band I think if you finish it you should look into getting it published! Yes it is that good. I'm very picky about grammar and spelling and all that and this is by far one of the best I have had the joy of reading!
