Conjuring Her Deepest Fears

Chapter 7

After they had cleaned the blood up, Matt wrapped Brian's wrists up. "Don't do that again," Matt told him. Brian was starting to act like himself again once he had gotten him calmed down. "I couldn't help it," Brian said. "Yes, you could. Don't do it again and I mean it." He sat down at the table across from Brian. "Did...did you see her?" he asked. "Did I see who?" Matt asked. "Don't play stupid with me. You know who I'm fucking talking about." He shook his head. "No, I didn't see her." Brian leaned back in his chair and stared at the table. "I'm going crazy. I'm fucking insane," he said. "No, you're not." "Yes, I am." "Syn, you're just feeling guilty. I know. I feel guilty, too." Brian shook his head.
Matt stood. "Let's just take you to my house and we'll talk there." "What about Valarie? What if she over hears us?" Brian asked. "Just come on."
The two stood up and walked out the door, then got in the car. Matt turned on the engine and pulled out of the driveway. "If Val asks any questions, let me handle it," Matt said. "No, I'll handle it. I'm not going to let you lie to your wife anymore than you probably have." "You're in no shape mentally. I will handle it," said Matt.
They pulled into his driveway and they noticed Val's car was gone. "Where the hell did she go?" Matt asked. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked it. He had a message from Valarie that read:

going to the grocery store. be back in a bit. love you <3

Matt nodded and got out of the car while Brian followed. They went inside and sat down on the couch. "How are we going to get out of this?" Brian asked. There was a silent moment while Matt thought. "Look, let's just wait until tomorrow and file a missing persons report." "I don't think that's a good idea," Brian said. "Got any better ideas?" Brian looked down at the floor and got quiet. Matt sighed. "Well, at least you're acting like yourself again. You were scaring the hell out of me." Without looking up, Brian said, "I was kinda scaring myself, too." "When did all of this start happening? You know, seeing her." Brian hesitated before answering. "The night it happened is when I started having dreams about her and hearing her voice. Then, the next morning is when I first saw her." "So, you've been seeing her ever since?" "Yeah," Brian quietly said. Matt cleared his throat. "When I came over, you said that she wanted to kill us." "Uh...I don't know. I must have been hallucinating." "Hallucinating?" The two looked up to see Val walk through the door with groceries. "What are you guys talking about?" "Oh...hey, babe. Do you need any help?" Matt asked as he stood up. "Yeah. Could you and Brian get the other groceries in the trunk. I'd really appreciate it." They stood up and walked out to Val's car. They grabbed as much as they could carry, which was all of them, and took them inside. Matt and Brian walked into the kitchen and sat the groceries down. Val turned and noticed Brian's wrapped up arm and held it with a gentle grip. "Brian, what happen to you?" she asked. "Oh...uh...I had a little accident." "Accident? Rain didn't do it, did she?" Brian looked at Matt, then back to Val. "Not technically," he said. Val looked confused. "Did she hurt you?" she asked with a concerned look. "No, she didn't hurt me." "Then what happened?" "I don't want to talk about it." Brian jerked his hand away and walked into the living room. "What's his problem?" Val asked Matt in a low voice. "I don't know. He's just been acting...weird lately."

It was about midnight. Brian was asleep on the couch and Matt was sleeping next to Val in their bed. He began to shift a little and tossed around. "Matt..." A voice whispered. It was only a whisper, but he could tell it was a female's voice. Val?No, It wasn't Valarie. But he knew the voice. He just couldn't quite remember who it belonged to. "Matt..." "What do you want..." "Matt..." Suddenly, Matt found himself in a pure white room. Nothing but white walls and white floors. There was nothing but a single mirror on the wall. He looked down to see what he was wearing. Matt wore a white dress shirt with white jeans and white shoes. What the hell? "Mathew..." He heard the voice call out to him again. Then, he remembered the mirror. He looked up and slowly walked towards it. He felt as if he was walking on air.
Matt finally made it to the mirror. He looked up and stared into it. Something wasn't right. His skin was a sickly green shade. His eyes were sunk in and were a light gray. He looked like...a zombie. Matt looked down at his clothes. Once clean, pure white clothes were now torn and stained with blood and dirt. Nothing went through his mind but confusion. He looked back into the mirror. Instead of being scared of what he saw, he was still confused. Rain stood feet away from him, also having the resemblance of a zombie. "Matt..." she said. She grinned at him, smiling right from ear to ear. Matt didn't do anything, but stare at her. She smiled wider then let out a laugh that sent chills up his spine. "R-Rain?" She giggled, but it wasn't a happy one. It was an evil one. Matt froze when she started walking to him. Step by step, she kept his eyes on him. Matt couldn't move. He just couldn't stop staring. She finally made it to him. "What did he tell you? Don't look in the mirrors." Matt's eyes widened. She quickly grabbed him and held a knife to his throat. "Never look in the mirrors." He let out a scream and all went black.
Matt jumped up and screamed. "Matt, it's okay." It was a different voice this time. He opened his eyes to see his wife, Valarie holding onto him. He grabbed her and pulled her towards him and hugged her tightly. "It's okay," she said as she rubbed his back. Matt was breathing hard and could feel his heart in his throat. "It's okay. It was just a bad dream." He swallowed hard. "What happened?" Val pulled away. "You were talking in your sleep. Then you started saying my name. You started tossing and turning, so I knew I had to wake you up." Matt sighed in relief. "I'm okay," he said. At that exact time, he heard a scream from downstairs. Brian screaming. Matt and Val looked at each other, then jumped out of bed. They ran down the stairs to see Brian sitting on the floor with his back to the couch. He was in the same position Matt had found him in earlier. Shaky and rocking back and forth. Matt jogged over to him and knelt beside him. "Brian? Brian, it's okay." Valarie walked over and knelt beside Matt. "Talk to me, Syn." He wouldn't answer. "What's wrong with him?" Valarie asked. Matt ignored her. "Answer me," he demanded. "S-she tried to kill me," he finally said. Val laid a hand on his shoulder. "Who?" she asked in a comforting voice. "Her. I can't get away from her." Val turned back to Matt. "Who is he talking about?" "I don't know," Matt answered. But he did know. He knew exactly who Brian was talking about. Then the thought crossed Matt's mind. We both might be going insane.
