Conjuring Her Deepest Fears

Chapter 6

Brain drove until he finally come upon the wooded area that he and Matt had buried Rain. He could barely look in that direction, the direction her grave was. Stared straight forward until he forced himself to turn his head. He could barely make out the still fresh dirt patch on the ground.
He quickly got out of the car and opened the trunk to reveal her suitcases. I can't believe I'm doing this in broad daylight, he thought to himself. He grabbed two bags and headed towards his buried wife. After reaching it, he sat the bags down and knelt beside the grave. He placed his hand on the dirt and tears fell from his eyes. Pull yourself together and finish this. He stood up and looked around. About five feet from Rain's grave was a very large bush. Perfect. He grabbed the bags and hid them in it, then went to the car and grabbed the other two and placed them in the same spot. Brian backed away to see if he could see the suitcases. They were perfectly hidden away from view by the leaves. He walked back over to the grave. "It's all here, baby," he said. "I brought your stuff to you. It's here." For some strange reason, he wanted to dig her up. He wanted to just get her back. But he knew if he did that, he wouldn't like what he saw.
Shaking the thoughts from his head, he turned and walked back to the car. He walked around to the back and closed the trunk. When he walked to the side of the car, he heard someone drive up next to him. "You need some help, sir?" He turned to see an old man in a pick up truck. He looked to be in his sixties and had paper white hair. "Uh...no. Thanks for the offer, though." The old man nodded. "I can't help but to ask what you were doing in the woods." Brian gave him a smile. "Had to release a few beers," he said. The old man chuckled. "What was your trunk doin' open?" Brian felt a little nervous. "I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but that's kind of my business," he said. The man nodded. "Sorry. I am being kind of nosy. I'll be on my way. You have a blessed day," the man said. "You too," Brian said and watched the man drive away. He felt relief as the man disappeared from sight. He sighed and got back in the car and drove home.

The voices came back to him that night. "Brian..." He started tossing and turning again. "Brian..." "G-go away..." "Brian..." "Shut up," Brian groaned. "Brian!" He jumped up again. His heart was pounding in his chest. He put his face in his hands. "Leave me alone," he said. His breathing calmed down a little, but then he felt the eerie feeling. "Leave me alone!" He moved his hands from his face. There was someone there. He felt it.
He jumped up out of the bed and ran down the stairs. Brian stopped when he reached the living room. "What the fuck do you want?" He spotted a shadow in the corner of his eye. He turned his head, but he saw nothing. "What do you want?" he repeated. "Brian..." He quickly looked around the room, his eyes moving from one object to the other. He stopped when he reached the mirror. There she was, smiling at him. Her gray, empty eyes pierced his soul. "Please..." he said. "Leave me alone..." Her smile grew wider. Brian quickly turned around to see that she wasn't there anymore. "Where did you go?" he demanded. Then, there was the bottle breaking. He bolted to the kitchen to see nothing but a broken bottle on the floor. Brian backed up to the wall and slowly sat down on the floor. He pulled his knees to his chest and stared at the ground.

Matt grabbed his jacket. "Val, I'm going to check on Brian." Valarie walked into the living room. "Why do you need to go check on Brian. Is there something wrong with him?" she asked with a concerned look. "Oh, no. He's fine. I'm just...going to see if he's doing okay with Rain." Matt felt horrible. Here he was, lying to his wife. "Oh, okay. Well, don't be long," Val said. Matt nodded and walked out the door then got in his car.
After pulling into Brian's driveway, he had a bad feeling. He ignored it and got out of the car. After walking onto the porch, Matt knocked on the door. There was no answer. He knocked again. "Come on, Brian. I know you're home." Matt turned the door knob. It was unlocked. He opened the door and stepped in. "Brian?" No answer. "Man, where are you?" He began to grow worried and walked through the living room to the kitchen. He slowed down when he saw puddles of blood on the tile floor. Matt's eyes widened and he ran into the kitchen. He stopped and didn't see anyone. He felt something touch his foot. "Shit," he said as he jumped back. But it was Brian. He had his knees up to his chest and his arms over his face. He looked like he had just gotten out of bed. Brian had on nothing but a pair of gym shorts, which were covered in blood. He was rocking back and forth with the blood running down his arms. Matt knelt down beside him. "Brian," he said as he placed his hand on his shoulder. "Syn, talk to me," he said. Brian looked up at him. His eyes were puffy and his face was red. "Is she gone?" he asked in a whisper. "Is who gone?" Matt asked. "I saw her. I saw her..." Matt saw slashes in Brian's wrists and they were deep. He grabbed his wrist. "Man, what did you do to yourself?" "She made me, Matt. She told me to do it," he answered. Brian was shaking violently and he was rocking back and forth. Matt turned his head and saw the bloody knife on the kitchen counter. He turned back to Brian. "Come on. Get up, Syn." "No!" He grabbed Matt's arm and held onto it tightly. "No. I can't. I'll see her..." He let go of his arm and started rocking back and forth again. "What are you talking about?" Matt asked. "The mirrors..." he answered. "She's in the mirrors..." He shook Brian. "Get a hold of yourself! She's dead. She's gone, Brian." Brian shook his head. "No...no..." "Yes, she is." "No, she's not. She's in the mirrors. Don't look in the mirrors, Matt." "She's not in the fucking mirrors," Matt said. "See?" He stood up and stared into the mirror on the wall. He expected to see nothing...but that's not what he saw. He saw a crooked smile, green decaying skin, blue lips, and her pale face. Matt froze and stared into her eyes. "Syn..." Brian just kept shaking and rocking. "I told you..." he said. "She wants us to die. She wants to kill us, Matt." Matt blinked, and the figure disappeared. He shook his head and looked down at Brian. "I didn't see anything," he told him. "You're a liar..." Brian replied. "Come on. We need to get you patched up." Brian finally agreed to stand up. He was weak and Matt had to practically pick him up. He wrapped one of Brian's arms around his shoulder and helped him to the kitchen table. After Brian sat down, he looked at Matt. "Do you know what it's like?" Matt grabbed a rag from under the sink and ran it in cool water. "Do I know what what's like?" There was a silent moment before Brian answered. "To be scared to see." "You're talking nonsense. Just be quiet." Brian stared at the table. "I'm scared to open my eyes most of the time. I can't even close my eyes without seeing her. I hear her when I close my eyes." Matt walked over to Brian and grabbed his arm. "Shut up," he said. "She hates me." Matt wiped the blood from the injuries. "I said shut up," Matt demanded. Brian kept staring at the table and went silent. After the blood had been cleaned from Brian arm and Matt stopped the bleeding, he tossed the rag in the sink. "I'm scared to be alone," Brian said. "Well, you're not going to be alone. You're spending the night with me tonight." He still wouldn't look up from the table.
Matt was trying to figure out if it was his mind or if he really saw her. It had to be his mind. How could she possibly disappear like that if she actually was standing there? SHe wouldn't be anyway. She's dead. There's no way it could happen. But her face was still glued into his mind. Her face.
