Conjuring Her Deepest Fears

Chapter 4

Brian tossed and turned in his bed. He kept hearing his name being called, but only in a whisper. "Brian..." He tossed and turned even more and started to talk in his sleep. "No..." he said. "Brian..." "S-stop..." "Brian...Brian!" He jerked up in bed. He was breathing hard and sweat rolled down his face. He looked around the room. Nothing. He turned toward the window and saw the curtains standing wide open. He got up and closed them. There was a very eerie feeling and he didn't like it not one bit. He looked over his shoulder and saw a shadow. It was a dark figure standing in his bedroom doorway. He bolted towards the lamp on his nightstand and jerked the string. The light suddenly filled the room, but there was nothing there. After standing straight up again, he slowly walked towards the door. Was he scared? Of course not. Why would he be scared? Why would a 32-year-old man be scared of the dark? He stopped at the door way and hesitated. Then, he peeked out into the hallway. Brian looked one way and then the other. Once again, he found nothing.
He turned back around and walked towards the bed. "Brian..." He spun around staring back at the doorway. Was that his imagination? If it was, was it because of what happened tonight? No, he really heard it. Or did he? He swallowed hard and slowly made his way to the closet. He opened it and grabbed the steel baseball bat he kept inside it. The thunder boomed and the lightning flashed outside adding to the creepy feeling Brian had. He walked out of his room and slowly down the hallway. He didn't like this. He's in the house all by himself and now he's hearing voices. After the events tonight, it kind of scared the hell out of him.
Holding the bat tightly in his hand, he walked down the stairs. The thunder sounded once again as he made it to the foot. What was he doing anyway? No one's in the house. But he still felt like he had to know that no one was in the house. He looked around the dark living room. It seemed to engulf itself in shadows that only disappeared when the lightning flashed. The only sounds that were audible was the heavy rain and thunder. He lowered the bat. "What are you doing?" he asked himself. "Go back to bed."
Just as he turned to go up the stairs, something stopped him. He jumped as he heard glass shatter in the kitchen. He quickly turned his head towards the kitchen. At this point, sleeping wasn't an option. He held the bat up and walked towards the kitchen. Slowly and quietly, he made his way. When he made it to the corner, he hid behind it. He took a few deep, silent breaths, then jumped around the corner and flipped the light switch on. Brian didn't see anyone. He sighed in relief and walked over to the counter. He stopped when he looked down and saw a broken beer bottle on the floor. He looked around once more and picked the broken pieces up. Brian threw them in the garbage and ran his fingers through his hair. "I can't take this."

It was morning when he woke up on his couch. He was still holding onto the bat. He noticed then scoffed and threw it in the floor. After leaning forward, he put his face in his hands. He sat there still for a moment, then stretched out and yawned, then rubbed his neck.
Brian wondered how Matt was doing. Did he hear voices last night, too? He had to know if it was just his mind playing tricks on him. He looked on the floor where Matt had dropped Brian's phone. The sound of it buzzing filled the room and it lit up. He was quick to walk over to it and grab it up. He unlocked his phone to see a text message from Matt.

9:36 a.m.
Matt:
get ready. gina & zacky want us to be at the coffee shop. DO NOT speak of it

He sent back:
why do they want us at the coffee shop

He waited a few minutes for a reply. He said on his couch and held his phone in his hands until it buzzed again.

9:42 a.m.
Matt:
just to hang out. get ready

Then he replied:
what if they ask about you know who

9:45 a.m.
Matt:
make something up...

Brian sighed then headed upstairs to get ready. He grabbed some clothes out of his drawer then turned around. There was Rain's stuff, still sitting there packed inside a few suitcases. Guilt washed over him and a lot of it. Once again, he said 'sorry' in his mind. It's too late to apologize.
He shook his head trying to get her voice out of his mind, then headed into the bathroom. He sat his clothes on the toilet seat and turned the faucet on. He splashed water on his face and opened the medicine cabinet. He grabbed a pain killer and closed the cabinet. When he did, he saw it. A person standing behind him. He screamed then jumped back. Brian covered his face with his hands. Her pale face. Her gray eyes. Her dirty hair. Her lips. Her cold, dead lips. He didn't want to move his hands away, but he forced himself to. He slowly moved them away from his face to see that what was standing behind him disappeared. She disappeared. Brian... He blinked several times to make sure. But then he finally realized...he might be going insane.

Notes

I changed my mind about waiting until tomorrow. I couldn't leave you hanging with just that.
