Alpha and Omega

By 2 in the afternoon, the next day, Matt and Brian received news that the special embryos have been planted in the surrogate. It happened quickly so the news of whether it’s successful or not will be announced could arrive before Brian’s ‘so-called’ week is up.

The surrogate is a woman named Elsa. She’s 22 years old who chose surrogation to help families. She has green eyes with dark brown hair and is little less than six feet tall.

*Three days after the surrogation*

Brian sighs, “Why is it like pulling teeth when I tell you to go eat something?”
“Because I’m scared to leave you alone,” Matt mutters, “What if today is the day, ya know?”
“Mattie I feel fine,” Brian replies, “I swear I’m fine.”
Matt pushes his lips to a thin line before nodding, “Okay. I’ll go.”
Matt gets off the side of the bed and stands up, “I’ll be back in a few.”
“I love you Babe,” said Brian.
Matt brushes a lock of hair out of Brian’s face before kissing Brian’s forehead, then Brian’s nose, and then Brian’s lips.
“I love you too Bri,” Matt replies.
Brian lightly smiles. Matt smiles back before kissing Brian again then leaving for the cafeteria.

Matt goes for a chicken sandwich and heads to the condiment table.

“Excuse me?”

Matt looks down to see a young boy with a tray of hamburgers.
“Can you help me please?” The little boy asks.
“Sure,” Matt answers.
Matt puts the tray on the table and picks up the boy. The boy puts the works on his hamburgers.
“Thanks Mister,” said the boy.
“You’re welcome,” Matt replies.
“My name’s Castiel,” said the boy, “What’s yours?”
“Matt,” Matt answers.
“You seem sad Matt,” said Castiel, “Why is that?”
Matt took a deep breath, “It’s my… my husband.”
“Oh I see,” said Castiel, “I don’t judge that kind of thing.”
A crooked smile appears on Matt’s face, “I appreciate that.”
“What’s wrong with your husband?” Castiel asks.
Matt presses his lips to a thin line, “He’s… {clears throat} he has limited time.”

“What happened?”

“He got hurt protecting me.”

“That doesn’t sound right. How come he’s being punished for protecting the one he loves?”

“I don’t know Castiel. I wish I could help him.”

“If you don’t mind, may I ask what your husband’s name, so I can say a prayer?”

“I don’t mind, his name is Brian Sanders. I appreciate that Castiel.”

“You helped me. It’s the least I can do.”

Matt smiles, “Well thank you.”
Castiel nods then checks his wristwatch, “I need to get going. It was nice to meet you Matt.”
“Nice to meet you too Castiel,” Matt replies.
Castiel walks away and Matt tends back to his sandwich. Then, Matt heard a noise that sounds like a herd of galloping horses. He turns around to see multiple doctors racing across the cafeteria. All. Matt heard is “Emergency at Room 446!”

……

The sandwich hit the floor at the same time Matt exits the cafeteria… to Room 446… Brian’s room. Matt couldn’t wait, fuck the elevators, he went for the stairs. He ignores all doctors and nurses to be by Brian’s side.
“Brian what’s wrong?” Matt asks as tears pool at the corners of his eyes.
“I’m sorry Mattie,” Brian groans weakly, “I can’t hold on much longer I… I just can’t… it hurts too much.”
Matt’s bottom lip quivers as tears roll down his cheeks, “Okay Bri… It’s okay. I don’t want you to go, but I don’t want you to be in pain. I could never stand to see you in pain… you know I love you, right?”
Brian squeezes Matt’s hand, “Of course I do, I love you too Baby.”
A doctor shoots a needle in Brian’s I.V., “This will help with the pain. I’m sorry there isn’t anymore we can do.”
Matt just nods before resting his forehead on Brian’s forehead. The doctors and nurses step back to give the couple some room.

“Is this a bad time?”
It was Elsa.
“This is Brian’s last moments,” Matt says softly.
“Then I should tell you guys now,” Elsa replies, “I’m pregnant. It’s a success.”
Brian smiles, “That’s so great.”
“I know they are only a day old,” said Elsa, “but would you like to talk to them?”
“I’d love that,” Brian answers.
Elsa walks to the head of the hospital bed and faces her tummy by Brian.
Brian places a hand on Elsa’s stomach, “You be good for Daddy… okay? He’s a very good guy. Papa loves you very much and I have no doubt Daddy will tell you everyday. I know you’ll grow up to be great.”
Brian lightly rubs Elsa’s belly before pulling his hand away.

“Mattie?”

“Yes Brian?”

“I love you… like I love you times infinity to the infinith power.”

Matt chuckles a little, “I love you times infinity to the infinith power too Brian.”
Brian eyelids start to droop, “Tell everyone… I love them, okay?”
“Of course I will Baby,” said Matt.
Brian’s face begins to looks peaceful and his grip, on Matt’s hand, loosens. Matt begins to grow more and more scared.

“…Good bye Mattie… I love you…”

Beep.

Beep.

Matt broke down in tears as he held onto Brian’s body, Brian’s head in the crook of Matt’s neck.
“Brian,” Matt sobs, “My Baby… I love you so much.”
Matt felt like the floor under has dissolved and he keeps on falling. His heart crumbling under the weight of Brian’s life fading away.
“I didn’t get to give you the proper honeymoon you deserved,” Matt whispered into Brian’s ear before sobbing again, “You’re a best friend, a best brother, a best son, a best musician… a best lover… a best husband. My beautiful loving husband who is so gifted… My Baby… My Brian…”
Matt feels a rushing chill from Brian’s body.

Matt looks at the heart monitor to see if he was really hearing it.
How is it possible?
Matt looks at Brian, who then gasps for air before slowly opens his eyes.
Brian looks around, “Oh god… is this Hell?”
Matt shakes his head, “You’re here… with me.”
Doctors check on Brian’s vitals.
“We need to check Brian’s conditions,” said one doctor.
Matt hesitates for a minute but he moves away. As doctors grab an ultrasound and prepare the X-Ray room and MRI.
Matt sits in the chair outside Brian’s room. Elbows on his knees while his hands are put together. He rests his forehead on his hands, eyes closed as he prays that this is not a dream.

Matt opens his eyes to see shoes before him. He looks up to see Dr. Maurice.
“It’s a complete miracle,” said the doctor, “His wounds… they’re completely healed and gone.”
“Thanks doctor,” said Matt.
“By the way,” said Dr. Maurice, “I found this note by your husband’s bed.” The doctor hands a folded piece of paper to Matt.
Matt takes the note, “Thanks again doctor.”
The doctor walks away. Matt stands up as he opens the note.

An angel’s prayer. It’s the least I can do.
May you and Brian grow old together and live happy lives.

There’s no signature, but Matt knew who it was from. He puts the note in his pocket before walking into Brian’s room and picking Brian up bridal style. Brian wraps his arms around Matt’s neck and puts his head on Matt’s shoulder.
“I might never let you go,” Matt says before kissing Brian’s forehead.

*At Johnny’s Bar*

Zacky is sitting at their usual spot waiting for Jimmy. He was told to wait because Jimmy had a surprise.
“Sorry for being a little late.”
Zacky looks to see Jimmy and another man.
“Zacky I’d like you to meet Arin,” said Jimmy.
“Hi,” Zacky greets with a wave.
“Hi,” Arin greets back who then blushes as he scratches the back of his neck.
Jimmy backs away, “I’ll let you guys get to know each other.”
Then Jimmy looks at Arin, “Take good care of him.” Then Jimmy walks away.

Arin has cocoa kissed skin and is about the same height as Zacky. He’s skinny with a few tattoos. Brown eyes that match his brown wavy hair.

Arin sits next to Zacky, “I’m somewhat new in town.”
“Liking Huntington Beach?” Zacky asks.
“Yeah,” Arin answers, “Meeting a bunch of nice people.”
“So I take it Jimmy is hooking us up?” Zacky asks.
Arin chuckles, “Yeah. Is… is that okay? I mean I just met you, but you are… pretty cute.”
Zacky smiles and blushes, “You’re not so bad yourself, but you should know, I… have some baggage.”
“I don’t judge baggage,” said Arin, “I mean doesn’t everyone have baggage?”
Zacky raises an eyebrow, “You have baggage?”
“None that I can think of,” said Arin, “but if I really judged what baggage someone has, then I’m would be totally single for the longest time.”
Zacky chuckles, “Well I know a great ice cream parlor by the beach. Wanna go?”
Arin smiles, “I’d love that.”

*That night*
*Sanders’ Residence*

After a couples bath together, Brian sits across Matt’s lap as Matt sits on the couch. Brian’s head is on Matt’s shoulder while his arms are wrapped around Matt’s waist. Matt has one arm holding Brian around the waist as his other hand is going through Brian’s dark shoulder length hair. Matt rests his head on top of Brian’s head, breathing in Brian’s clean scent and the smell of Brian’s shampoo.
“Soon we’ll be like this and then our little boy or girl will come running for a bedtime story,” Brian says with a smile.
“Yeah,” Matt replies, “and then we’ll get the best wake-up ever the next morning.”
Brian chuckles, “Yeah.”
Matt kisses the top of Brian’s head before standing up as he carries Brian bridal style, “Now to tuck YOU in.”
“Only if you read me a bedtime story,” said Brian, “and snuggle with me.”
Matt chuckles as he goes up the stairs. He sets Brian down in the bed and Matt slips in the bed as well. After covering them both, Matt spoons Brian.
Matt kisses Brian’s cheek, “I love you… times infinity to the infinith power.”
Brian smiles and giggles, “I love you times infinity to the infinith power too Mattie.”
