Chapter 5

Jeremy’s POV

It was hard. With each day that was passing by with Katie being in coma I was dying a bit more. Seeing her like this, the tube down her throat, the needles piercing her skin, it was breaking my heart and I blamed myself for this. If I had stopped her she wouldn’t have crawled out from behind the counter to protect that child. She wouldn’t have gotten shot.
This was however the only thing I regretted. I wanted her safe and being treated like the queen she was. I knew I could give her that. When I sat on her bedside, holding her hand, I knew it was right. We were meant to be. Our friendship wasn’t the plain and innocent one. It was more than obvious in Vegas that we would make an amazing couple.
It’s been almost two months now that Katie has been residing in this hospital bed, fast asleep in an artificial coma. I was with her all day every day and I would continue to be there no matter how long it would take for her body to fully recover.
“Oh baby. I really wish you would come back to me. I’m so sorry for everything. I should have protected you.” I whispered, caressing her hand with my thumb. Her skin was soft like silk but pale and ice cold.
“I promise you, honey. When you wake up I’m gonna take care better care of you.” I kissed the top of her hand.
“I don’t think that it’s your job.” Ivan’s voice reached my ears. I looked up and saw him enter the room with another bouquet of flowers. I rolled my eyes and turned back to Katie.
“I mean it, Jer. Don’t get caught up in this. She is Brian’s girl…”
“Can you stop mentioning that?” I pressed through gritted teeth. I was very much annoyed of him reminding me of Brian. “If he was so much in love with her then where is he?”
“I …” Ivan began but stopped.
“Exactly. It’s not my problem when he ignores my calls. And I tell you what.” I stood and turned to my best friend. “I can be a better boyfriend than Syn ever was.”
It was our old fight. Since I had told the medics that I was her boyfriend Ivan was pretty pissed at me. He was very good friends with M.Shadows and didn’t want to see him or any of his brothers hurt. Nevertheless, this was my chance to convince Katie that I was better for her. It was her decision after all.
“Whatever, man.” Ivan rolled his eyes and pulled a chair to the girl’s bedside. “As long as you called them …”
“I did!” I cut him off rudely.
“Alright, alright.” He raised his hands in defense. “Now tell me, how is she doing?”
I sighed but sat back on my chair, grabbing her hand again. She looked so peaceful, a real sleeping beauty, with her pale skin and softly glowing hair.
“She is doing better. Her heartbeat has been steady for the past four weeks. They want to do a few last tests to see if her brain received any permanent damage. If everything is fine they gonna wake her up in a few.”
“Wow, these are amazing news.” Ivan said smiling. “It’s been so long.” He looked softly at the girl’s face.
“Yeah …” I said, deep in thoughts.
I was actually thinking about the future; making plans for when she wakes up. Of course I wanted to take her home with me but my apartment was still more of a bachelor hole and not fitting to accommodate a beautiful girl like Katie. I was thinking about refreshing the paint on my walls and the furniture. In addition there were my two dogs Bean and Bella that felt a bit abandoned but they would get a new mommy and that’s what definitely makes up for it.
Over all I just wanted her better. I wanted her awake and see the beautiful smile of hers. I wanted her back in this world, amongst the living, brightening our days with her shining personality. I still had that picture in my head, when she was lying on the floor of the airport, the light leaving her eyes. It was a horrific image that haunted me until I saw her smile again. That was all that mattered to me.

Katie’s POV

Darkness and silence. These two things were my only friends. They had been feeling me up until I had lost track of time. I couldn’t even remember why I was here in the first place. All I knew was that this darkness was soothing the pain in my heart, holding me tight in a safe embrace and the silence calmed down my raging soul. After a long time I finally felt at peace.
But this peace had a price. At first I had tried to fight it but in the end I didn’t have the strength to hold onto it. But it did me good. My heart didn’t feel as scarred and shattered anymore. It was like a healing wave that washed through my body. It made me smile, feeling the constant throbbing slowly fade into nothing but a small tingling sensation.
I had always been a happy person, living and enjoying the light. California had giving me the opportunity to start all over. But the darkness I was in right now gave me so much more comfort than the living world ever could. Yes, I was lonely but it was a consent loneliness that I didn’t mind at all. I would rather be alone in a dark place like this than invisible in between a group of people.
The good thing was I didn’t really care about all this. I was floating, feeling content and at peace. And this was all that mattered to me.
