Oh My My My

"Matt, get back here!" AJ giggled as she chased her best friend around the yard.

"Catch me if you can!" Matt called back at her as he ran around a tree. AJ was able to catch him due to some quick thinking to go the opposite way around. She tackled him and they both laughed as they stood up in the late morning sunshine. They both stopped and AJ turned to face him, her eyes wide and sparkling at him. He smiled looking down at her. He was considerably taller than she was, as he was nine and she was only seven. AJ absolutely adored him--he was her best friend, and she looked at him like the stars that shone in the sky.

"They're going to grow up and get married," AJ's dad said as he and Matt's father watched the two kids from the back window in the kitchen sipping coffee while the two mothers sat at the table and shook their heads as the men laughed.

"Oh my, my, my," AJ's mother smiled as Matt's mom rolled her eyes and shook her head, smiling.

Matt ran up into the tree house at the top of the tree he had run around from AJ. Once he got to the top, he turned around to find the little girl standing right behind him.

"What're you doing up here? I'm the captain of this fort!" Matt declared, putting his foot down onto the wood.

"Well I'm co-captain!" AJ stated, stomping her foot down in a similar fashion to Matt's.

"Hey, I can beat you up--I'm bigger than you!" Matt said, with slight irritation. AJ took a hesitant step back away from him and Matt stayed mad for a second before smiling, causing AJ's face to light up.

"Hey, what if I stayed up here and I was the trapped princess! You can be my knight in shining armor and fight the dragon to save me!" AJ grinned, throwing her hands up into the air.

Matt smiled and shook his head before saying, "Okay," and jumped down out of the tree house. He picked up a stick to use as a sword and AJ started putting on her damsel-in-distress act and pointing out where the dragon was. At her direction, Matt would swipe and stab and jump to defeat the dragon. AJ would call out the hits and Matt would adjust his moves accordingly. Once she called out that the dragon was dead, Matt struck a heroic pose before giving her a "now what?" look.

"Now you save the princess!" AJ answered in a "duh" tone.

Matt jumped up the wood ladder nailed into the tree, grabbed AJ, and had her hold onto him as he climbed back down. Once they were safely on the ground, he looked to her once again for instruction.

"Now you kiss me," she replied, clasping her hands behind her back.

"Kiss you?" Matt asked, looking at her uncertainly.

"Yes, Matt." Then, with a smirk, she added, "I dare you to kiss me."

Never one to turn down a dare, Matt hesitantly closed his eyes and leaned down towards AJ, who quietly began to run away, giggling. When Matt opened his eyes, he saw her on the other side of the yard, laughing and waving at him. He got a mischevious grin on his face before running after her and starting the chase all over again--but this time, in reverse.

"Did you two see that?" Matt's dad grinned at the two mothers, jerking his thumb in the direction of the window. When the two women gave him a questioning glance, he laughed, "Matt tried to kiss her."

Matt's mom chuckled as AJ's mom smiled. "They are too sweet."

"I'm telling you," Aj's father grinned, "they're going to grow up, fallin love, and get married. I'll bet you anything, that's what's gonna happen."
