Where Are You Now

"Well, it's too late now, Haner."

Brian's Point of View

I walked away from the door shaking the things Kim had said from my mind. She doesn't get it. She doesn't know.

"Hey, I caused a fuss didn't I?" Marilyn asked with a expression I couldn't quite place.

"She'll be okay. Ready?"

"Yeah, lets go." She gave me a slight smile before starting to walk towards the park.

"So, what did you want to talk about?" I asked after a few minutes.

"I just wanted to see how you were doing." Marilyn stated with a shrug.

"I don't really know how I'm doing. I miss him. I've never missed someone I never even met before." I said honestly. If there is one person that I can talk about this with it's Marilyn.

"I'm sorry, Brian. I know that this is all my fault and I know that you hate me but just know that I loved him more than anything and I wasn't like this with him."

"I believe you, 'Lyn." I said, I knew it would do no good to try and talk her out of believing those things about herself. It's planted to deep in her mind to just be talked away.

We fell into a silence and walked the rest of the way to the park that way. We were about to sit down on a near by bench when I realized that I never got an answer to the one thing I've been dying to know since she left.

"Why'd you leave me, 'Lyn?"

"You know why." She stated after sitting down.

"Not really, no. Why didn't you stay with me and let me know my son?" I demanded.

"Brian, lets not get into this right now." Marilyn stated.

"No, we're doing this now. You have a history of running away when I least expect it." I spat.

"Fine, I left you because you would've told me to leave anyway."

"What?!"

"You heard me. I almost told you and I decided to ask you first and you said I don't want kids at all. I'll be too busy for that kind of life. Which is fine by me."

I remember that day. I had no idea.

"Marilyn, I didn't know."

"Yeah and those words are why I never wanted you to know before or after I lost him."

"I was stupid then." I explained.

"It's done Brian. Let's just leave it alone."

"I looked for you, ya know." I said.

"I know. I hated you, Brian."

"I hated me too."

Marilyn laughed a small laugh.

"What?"

"It's funny cause we switched place."

"What?" I asked with a small laugh of my own.

"Now you hate me and I hate myself." She explained before pulling a cigarette and lighter from her pocket. As she put it in her mouth I saw the track marks on her wrist that were once hidden beneath her jacket.

"Is that what the drugs are for?" I asked.

"I guess." She said with a shrug.

"Your mom told me about you overdosing." I stated.

"I'm not surprised she likes telling you my secrets."

"Don't be mad at her, 'Lyn. She was just trying to help."

"Why is it that people think I need help? I'm fine." She said taking a drag off her cigarette.

"Yeah, you're the poster child of fine." I said sarcastically.

"Well, I didn't come here to talk about me and my mental state."

"No, you came here to see how I was doing." I reminded.

"Actually no. I came here to give something." She said like she just remembered.

"What?"

"It's back in my car."

We started back towards my house in a comfortable silence. I miss her. This isn't the Marilyn I remember. I miss that girl.

"Marilyn!" Someone yelled.

We stopped and turned in the direction the voice came which was across the street.

"Charlie, go home!" Marilyn yelled back.

Oh, I remember this asshole.

She started walking again.

"Not without you, Mari!" He yelled before he started running towards us.

Marilyn turned around and looked at me before speaking again, "Are you coming?"

"Uh, yeah." I replied as I caught up to her and we continued to walk back to my house pretending that this Charlie guy isn't following us.

"Marilyn, stop ignoring me." He said from behind us like he could read my thoughts.

"I'm not ignoring you I've said all I have to say to you." She replied as we continued our walk home.

Thank god, we're half way there.

"So, who is this guy?"

"That's none of your business, Charlie."

"What's your deal with him? You fuck him and he gives you Tar?" Charlie asked.

"Alright, that's enough. You heard her why don't you do like the lady asked and go home." I said.

"Lady? She ain't no lady!" Charlie exclaimed with a laugh.

I was about to step closer to him when Marilyn reached out and grabbed my hand.

"Hey, let me handle this, okay?" She asked.

"You know what he's about to say, don't you?"

"Yeah, the same thing your girlfriend said about me earlier. I'm used to it. Just go on ahead wait for me at my car, yeah?" She asked with a smile.

"You sure you'll be okay?" I asked.

"Yeah, I know how to deal with this."

I gave her a smile and nodded before starting my journey on home. Thankfully it wasn't far, I reached my driveway in about five minutes.

"Kim
?" I called out the woman sitting on my front steps.

"I was waiting for you to come home." She stated once I was close enough for me to hear her soft voice.

"Why?" I inquired.

"I called my dad and I'm going to go stay with him in L.A. for a couple of days." She stated as she stood up.

"Please don't. I want you here with me." I reasoned as I reached out an took her hand in my own.

"Do you?" She asked as she finally looked me in the eye.

"Of course. Look, I didn't mean what I said earlier. I was just, well I don't really know what I was. A dick, I guess." I stated with a chuckle.

"Yeah, I agree with that but that's not why I'm leaving."

"Then why?"

"Whatever it is that you're hiding from me seems big and important and if I don't leave and give you some space to think things over then I'm gonna pester you to death. It's killing me that you don't think you can tell me whatever it is."

"Babe, it's not that I don't think I can tell you. I just, I need to think about it."

"I know. I'm gonna go. Daddy's expecting me tonight." She said as we started walking to her car still holding hands.

"Okay, call me when you get there." I said once we reached her door.

"I will." She said after turning around to face me.

"I love you, Brian." She said with worry in her eyes.

"I love you too, Kim." I said before leaning in and kissing her lips.

She pulled back after a minute and sighed before speaking, "I better go before I change my mind."

I watched her get in her car and pull out of the driveway and take off down the street. I'm going to miss her but I know she's right. I need to decide who else needs to know about this or if anyone else. I don't even know if I have it in me to talk to anyone else about it and answer the same questions again.

"Hello?" I heard Marilyn say while waving her hand in front of my face.

"Hey, I didn't see you walk up." I explained.

"Clearly." She mocked with a smile.

"So, I take it you got rid of your douchebag." I stated.

"Yeah, looks like you got rid of your bitch too." She replied in a bitchy tone.

"Kim's not a bitch." I defended.

"Charlie's not a douchebag." She replied back.

"Oh come on! He is a piece of shit!"

"Oh, let me guess Mom told you all the horrible things he's done, right?"

"I don't know about all but she told me enough. He's a fucking drug dealer, 'Lyn!"

"How do you think we met, fuck face! He's a drug dealer and I'm a drug user! All he's done was what I asked him to, he threw mom out because I told him to! None of you guys know him so stop judging him." She exclaimed.

"Fine, I thought you were making progress but I guess I was wrong."

"I'm not your fucking problem, Haner. Your fucking problem is that perfect little rich girl that just left you." She spat.

"She didn't leave me."

"You know I don't really care either way. I came here to do two things, one of which is done." She said as she walked over to her car and opened the front passenger side door. She pulled out a box of stuff and sat it down away from the car.

"And now so is the second. You can keep all of that, it's my mom's copies." She stated.

"What the fuck is it?" I asked.

"It's pictures and home videos of him. I thought it might help. I can take it back if you don't want it. I mean after all you didn't want us either." She spat bitterly.

"I want it. I wanted it then too."

"Well, it's too late now, Haner."
