Tied to Our Fate

The next morning I wandered downstairs after I had a shower and got dressed. As I was coming down the stairs into the kitchen I heard someone laughing. A girl laughing…I knew that laugh. I had heard it a million time. Laney. She was sitting on the counter while zack appeared to be making breakfast. He never cooks. A smile twisted at the corners of my mouth, which I automatically tried to hide.
“Oh, hey!” Laney smiled, hopping off the counter.
“Hey” I smiled back.
“Since when do you cook Zack?”
He shot a look in my direction and then Laney’s. I knew why he was, I just like to embarrass him.
“Since now I guess.” He mumbled.
“So what do you wanna do today?” Laney asked.
I shrugged. There really wasn’t anything I really felt like doing today. The issue of my car weighed heavy on my mind. I still didn’t want to think about it but I couldn’t help it.
“Come on. There has to be something.”
“Something relaxing.”
“How about we get our nails done?”
I cocked a eyebrow. That did sound rather tempting.
“Ok, you talked me into it.”

“What color is that?” I asked Laney as we left the nail salon.
“It’s called Passion Purple.” She answered holding up her hands so they could sparkle in the sun.
“Nice. I should have gone with that.” I stated, holding up my black nails.
“Black suits you though.” Laney shrugged.
I pulled my sunglasses over my eyes as we walked down the street.
“So what’s going on with you and Brian?” she finally asked me.
I knew that question was burning in her mind.
A smirk formed on my lips.
“You’re totally fucking!”
“We are not!” I laughed.
“We just decided to be together last night.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“It happened just last night.”\
“But we’ve been out for like two hours and you haven’t told me yet!”
“You didn’t ask.” I chuckled.
She smacked me lightly on the arm, playfully.
“Don’t be a smart ass!”
I felt my purse vibrate suddenly and I carefully dug it out trying not to mess up my nails. The screen flashed Brian and my heart beat quickened a little.
“Who’s that? Your BOYFRIEND?!”
“Oh hush!”
“Hello?” I answered.
“Hey, what are you doing?”
“I’m out with Laney.”
“HI BOYFRIEND!!” she practically screamed.
Brian laughed on the other end.
“So I’m guessing you told her?”
“Yeah I did...”
“Cool. Well I guess I’ll be seeing you tonight girlfriend. Zack’s having a party.
“A party? What for? We had a BBQ a few days ago.”
“Said he felt like it.”
“I’m surrounded by alcoholics.”
“Pretty much.”
“Alright, well I’ll see you later then.”
“Ok. Bye.”
I hung up the phone and turned to Laney.
“Zack’s throwing a party. Wanna come?”
“He already told me.”
“When?”
“Earlier at your house.”
“Oh that’s right.”
‘Hey, I need to tell you…”
But the buzzing of my phone cut her off.
“Ah, hold on a sec.”
The screen flashed private number and I immediately answered this time.
“Look, I don’t know who the hell you are but you need to lose my number. I’m not interested in anything you’re selling!” I shouted angrily, then hanging up.
Laney just stood there looking at me.
“This private number keeps calling me.” I explained.
She nodded then we were on our way to the car.
