Tied to Our Fate

Chapter 9

“Who the fuck would do this?” I repeated.
We were sitting on the hood of Brian’s car watching the cops look over the car and collect any evidence.
“I don’t know.” he replied.
“It was probably just some punk kid.”
I sighed heavily and took a drag off my cigarette.
“They’ll figure it out, Stacy.”
A cop started walking up to us and I hopped down off the car.
“Well, we couldn’t find any prints.” He stated, dryly.
I watched him closely as he fiddled with his notepad. He didn’t seem too interested.
“Nothing at all?” Brian questioned.
“No, nothing. I’m sorry. And without any evidence at this time we can’t really do anything but wait for something to come up.” He explained.
“But the stereo wasn’t touched.” He added.
“What?”
“If someone was looking to vandalize the vehicle they would have most likely taken the stereo and anything else of value.”
“So you’re saying you don’t think it was just random?” I injected.
He shrugged slightly.
“That is possible. Has anyone tried to hurt you or harassed you recently? Anything weird happened?”
“No.” I shook my head.
“We will give you a call if anything shows up.” He nodded in my direction, walking back to my car.
As soon as he was out of hearing range I turned to Brian.
“They don’t know a damn thing. They aren’t gonna find anything.” I huffed.
“You don’t know that. They could find something.” He assured me.
I shook my head in disgust and walked over to the passenger side of his car.
“Take me home?”
“Hey, where you been?” Zack asked as I walked in the front door.
I practically threw my keys on the table beside the door out of anger and stomped into the living room plopping on the couch with a huff.
“Someone pretty destroyed my car.” I stated.
“What?” Zack exclaimed.
“After we left the bar, Brian was taking me back to my car and we found it. All the windows were smashed in and the tires were slashed and it was dented all over.”
“Oh shit…”
“Did you report it?”
I nodded.
“They didn’t find anything though. The cop didn’t seem too interested in doing so either.”
“Wow, that sucks. You can use my car.”
“Really?”
“Yes, don’t wreck it please.” he laughed.
“Thanks.” I smile, half heartedly.
We sat there maybe ten minutes before my phone buzzed beside me. the screen flashed private number.
I sighed and hit the ignore button. A few minutes later it rang again. Once again the screen flashed private number. For the second time I hit ignore. After the third time I finally picked up.
“Hello?” I answered rather hatefully.
Nothing.
“Hello?! If you keep calling me it must be important.”
Still nothing.
I hung up and tossed it into the cushions.
“Who was that?” Zack asked.
“I have no idea. But that’s the fourth call from a private number I’ve got today.”
“Probably a telemarketer.”
I nodded.
“I’m going to bed. Night.”
“Night.” He waved his eyes still on the TV.

I lay down on my bed and breathed deeply. This had turned out to be kind of a shitty day. Who knows how much it was going to cost me to fix my car. I grabbed my phone and dialed Laney.
“Hello?” she answered after the second ring.
“Hey.” I mumbled.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“My car got fucking trashed.”
“What?”
“Someone smashed the windows and slashed the tires.”
“What?! Oh my God! Why?!”
“I have no idea.”
“Shit, I’m sorry. What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know. Zack is letting me use his car in the mean time.”
“Well that’s good. Did you call the cops?”
“Yeah, I don’t think they’re gonna find anything.”
“Damn, that really sucks. I’ll come over tomorrow and we can hang out, get your mind off it.”
“That sounds like a plan. I’ll talk to you tomorrow, ok? my brain is fried right now.”
She laughed slightly.
“Ok, talk to you later.”
“Bye.”
Sitting my phone on the bedside table, I rolled over and closed my eyes, trying to get the thoughts of my car out of my head. This really sucked and I had no idea what I was going to do.

Some time later, I woke to my phone ringing on the table beside me.
“Hello?” I groaned into the phone.
“Oh, were you asleep?” Brian asked on the other end.
“Yeah, I don’t remember falling asleep though.” I sighed.
“Oh, ok. well I’ll let you get back to sleep.”
“What did you need?”
“I was calling to check on you.”
I smiled sleepily and rolled over to my back.
“Well I’m alive.”
“Good, that’s all I needed to know.” he laughed.
“Come over in the moring?”
“Yeah, I will. What about Zack?”
“well, I mean it’s not like we’re together, together…” I chuckled, nerviously.
“True, true.”
We were quiet for a minute until he spoke.
“Do you want to be?”
My heart started to race at his words.
“Really?”
“Yeah, really. I like you, and I know you like me.”
“Ok.” I smiled.
“So you’ll be my girlfriend?”
I felt like we were in high school again; all giggly and shit.
“Yes, I will be your girlfriend.” I grinned giddily.
