Until The End

I Know Its Hard

Daphne and Zoey never really had anything in common; they were complete opposites. Today though, they shared the same facial expression; angst and shock.

“Bri, I don’t think that’s such a great idea!” Zoey said through gritted teeth.

“Besides, we have a lot of catching up to do,” Daphne smiled sheepishly as she motioned to her parents.

“It’s a great idea and you guys have forever to catch up. Now slide in,” Brian smirked as he slid over to the wall.

Kim and Gary sat next to Zoey.

“Hi Brian!” Misty smiled as she plopped down next to him.

“Hey kiddo,” Brian smiled as he tickled her side.

Daphne reluctantly sat next to Misty.

“So how have you been Bri?” Gary asked.

“I’m great, I’m just glad that Daphne’s finally home,” Brian smirked.

Daphne scoffed and rolled her eyes as she looked over her menu.

“How are you Zoey?” Kim asked.

“Fine thanks,” Zoey muttered.

Daphne felt a gaze on her and chose to ignore it. Even though she already knew what she wanted, she looked over the menu a few more times. A crumpled up napkin landed in front of her, distracting her.

“He is so childish,” she thought.

She sighed and unfolded the napkin. His messy handwriting was scrawled across it.

Ready to talk yet?

Scoffing, Daphne crumpled the napkin and dropped it on the table. Frowning, Brian huffed and sank back in the booth. Smirking, he leaned down to Misty and whispered something in her ear.

“Mommy, why won’t you talk to Brian?” she asked after Brian whispered his request.

Daphne’s eyes widened as she glared over at Brian.

“You two aren’t talking?” Kim frowned.

“You wouldn’t understand mom,” Daphne muttered.

“Is this about what happened before the funeral? Daphne that was so long ago!” Kim scolded.

“I tried apologizing yesterday,” Brian shrugged.

“Come on Daphne; Brian feels bad about it,” Kim pressed.

“Mom! Can we please not talk about this?” Daphne snapped.

An awkward silence fell over them until a waitress came over to take their order. They all quietly told her their orders and Daphne refused to look at anyone when the waitress walked away.

“So are you going to look for a job Daph?” Gary asked, desperate to relieve the tension.

“Uh yeah, I want to look around the salons and see if any are hiring. I don’t want to mooch off Matt and Jade too much so I want to start working as soon as possible,” Daphne shrugged.

The awkward silence returned until their food came.

“Well we better get going, we have a lot of shopping to do,” Kim grinned once they finished eating.

“You two coming?” Gary asked Daphne and Misty.

“Not today dad, I’m really tired and I just want to go home. We’ll catch a cab,” Daphne told them.

“Are you sure?” Kim asked.

“Yeah, you two have fun,” Daphne smiled lightly.

“Alright, we’ll see you two later. Don’t be a stranger Daph,” Kim smiled as she stood up and kissed Daphne’s and Misty’s cheeks.

“Love you girls,” Gary smiled as he mimicked Kim’s actions.

“Love you too,” Daphne smiled.

Once they left, Daphne stood up from the booth and laid the money for her food and Misty’s on the table.

“Its time to go baby,” she announced as she held out her hand.

“Bye Brian!” Misty smiled as she got out of the booth and grabbed Daphne’s hand.

“See ya Misty,” Brian smiled.

He glanced up at Daphne. She held his gaze for a few moments before walking towards the doors. Brian sighed and watched the two walk out. Daphne and Misty walked out of the diner and Daphne immediately blew out a sigh of relief. They stood on the sidewalk and waited for a cab to go by. After waiting for about ten minutes, Daphne felt sweat begin to form on her. She groaned and swiped her hand across her forehead.

“Mommy I’m hot,” Misty whined as she leaned against Daphne.

“I am too baby. Here, let me pull your hair up,” Daphne muttered as she pulled one of the hair ties off her wrist.

She combed her fingers through Misty’s hair before pulling it up in a pony-tail.

“Daph!” a familiar voice called.

“Great,” Daphne mumbled as she watched Brian walk out of the diner with Zoey in tow.

“Let me give you a ride,” he offered as he approached them.

“Bri you have to take me to my sister’s!” Zoey protested.

“I’ll drop you off and then take them home. How about it Daph?” he asked.

“We’re fine,” Daphne muttered.

“Daphne its hot as hell out here and you know you’ll be waiting forever for a cab. Just get in the truck,” he insisted.

“We’ll be fine,” she told him.

“Obviously you won’t; you both are sweating bullets. Stop being so stubborn!” he spat.

She glared at him before reluctantly nodding. Brian unlocked his truck and hopped into the driver’s seat. Daphne and Misty climbed into the back and buckled in. Daphne combed her fingers through her hair before pulling it up in a pony-tail. Once Zoey angrily climbed in the passenger seat, Brian started the car and blasted the air-conditioning. The car ride to Zoey’s sister’s house was awkwardly silent.

“I’m going to need money for the mall,” Zoey announced once they stopped.

“Where’s your card at?” Brian asked.

“Its maxed out,” Zoey shrugged.

“Zoey,” he groaned.

“What?” she spat.

Brian sighed and shook his head before pulling his wallet out and handing her his credit card. Daphne bit her lip to stifle a laugh.

“I love you!” Zoey smiled as she leaned over and pecked his cheek.

“Love you too,” Brian muttered.

“Bye Zoey,” Daphne smirked.

Zoey sent her a glare before getting out of the car.

“You getting up front Daph?” Brian asked as he glanced at her in the rearview mirror.

Daphne hesitated before unbuckling her seatbelt and climbing out of the truck. She got up and front and buckled her seatbelt. As Brian drove, he couldn’t help but steal glances at her. He sighed as he noticed how tense she was because of him.

“Mommy can we get ice cream?” Misty asked as they passed Coldstone.

“Maybe later baby,” Daphne told her.

“We can go now; I could go for some anyway. I’ll buy,” Brian offered.

“You don’t have to,” she muttered.

“I want to,” he insisted as he made a U-turn.

He parked in front of Coldstone and got out of the truck. He quickly strode over to Daphne’s side and opened the door for her before she could. Daphne was shocked to say the least.

“Uh, thanks,” she muttered.

She got out of the car and opened Misty’s door. Once Misty got out, Daphne led the way into the store. Brian slowed his stride as he caught sight of something on the back of Daphne’s shoulder. He noticed it was a tattoo of a pink flower with Misty’s name written inside of it.

“When did you get this?” he asked as he ran his fingers over it.

Daphne shuddered and felt goose bumps form where he touched her.

“When Misty turned one,” she told him.

“I’m going to go use the bathroom,” she muttered as they waited in line.

She quickly walked over to the bathrooms and walked inside. She sighed and leaned against the door. She walked over the sinks and looked in the mirror. She fixed her smudged make-up and let out a deep breath.

“You can do this,” she muttered.

After giving herself a pep talk for a few more minutes, she walked out of the bathroom. She saw Brian and Misty sitting at a table with their ice cream. Misty was sitting next to him pointing to his tattoos and asking about them. Smiling lightly, she walked over to them and sat across from them.

“I got you your favorite,” Brian smiled as he pushed a cup of cake batter ice cream with rainbow sprinkles towards her.

“You remembered?” she asked.

“Of course and I remember when you were little you hated the chocolate sprinkles because they looked like bugs,” he laughed.

“Oh my God,” she laughed.

As they ate their ice cream, Daphne found herself easily falling into conversation with Brian.

“Remember when Jimmy chased that goose and called it a stallion duck?” Brian laughed.

“That was so hilarious!” Daphne laughed.

“God I miss him,” he muttered as he leaned back in the booth.

“Me too,” she muttered.

“You two want to go to the park?” Brian asked as few minutes later.

“Yes!” Misty answered.

They looked over at Daphne.

“Uh, sounds fun,” she nodded.

They got up and threw their trash out before walking out. They walked down the street towards the park. Misty grabbed Daphne’s hand and Brian’s hand. Brian’s eyes widened and he questioningly looked over at Daphne. Daphne merely shrugged.

“Just go with it,” she mouthed.

He hesitantly nodded. They made their way into the park and Misty ran off to the playground. Daphne and Brian sat on a nearby bench. Brian was the one to break their awkward silence.

“Talk to me Daph,” he pleaded.

“What am I supposed to say Bri?” she asked.

“You can start by saying something about our fight yesterday,” he suggested.

“Well it really hurt that you called me a stubborn bitch,” she shrugged.

“I know it did and I’m really sorry. I was just so angry,” he muttered.

“That’s the best excuse you have?” she laughed humorlessly.

“You know how I get when I’m pissed off Daph. I’m really sorry, I was just trying to apologize for everything but you weren’t listening,” he grumbled.

“Well I’m listening now,” she muttered after a few minutes.

He glanced at her and shifted closer to her.

“I’m really sorry for all the horrible things I said to you before Jimmy’s funeral. I had no right to and I should’ve realized that you were in as much pain as I was. I was just so upset and angry at the same time that I exploded. I just hadn’t seen you in so long and it was a surprise to see you. It was just the wrong timing. I felt terrible for it and I totally regret it because it drove you away,” he explained.

“I guess you kind of had a right to say all those things,” she admitted after she took everything in.

“No I didn’t! I was-”

She pressed a finger to his lips to shush him.

“Its my turn to explain now,” she smiled lightly.

Brian smiled and nodded.

“It was months since I last talked to Jimmy before that happened to him. I regret not talking to him everyday and not telling him I love him every chance I got. I regret not visiting more often and I understand now why you felt the way you did. It did look pretty bad that a funeral was the only thing that brought me home,” she shrugged.

“Don’t blame yourself for the way I acted Daph, I was all my fault. I wasn’t-”

“Bri?” Daphne asked cutting him off.

“Hmm?”

“Shut up,” she laughed.

Brian laughed and shook his head.

“So do you forgive me?” he asked.

Daphne hesitated. A shrill cry cut her off before she could speak. She looked towards the playground and saw Misty on the ground. She jumped up and ran over to her.

“What’s wrong?” she asked as she sank down beside Misty.

“I fell,” Misty sniffled and clutched her knee.

Daphne looked down at her knee and winced at the large scrape that was bleeding slightly.

“Its alright baby,” she cooed as she wiped away her tears.

“What happened?” Brian asked as he jogged up to them.

“She hurt her knee,” Daphne told him as Misty quietly cried in her arms.

“I’m sorry Misty,” he frowned as he knelt down next to them.

“It’ll be okay baby,” Daphne cooed as she kissed Misty’s forehead.

Misty finally calmed down a few minutes later.

“Better?” Daphne asked.

Misty nodded.

“Good now no more crying,” Brian smirked as he pressed a raspberry kiss to her cheek and tickled her side.

Misty went into a giggle fit and tried squirming away from him.

“Alright how about we go home and get your knee cleaned and then we go bother Uncle Matt,” Daphne smirked.

Misty smiled and nodded.

“Lets go then,” Brian smiled as he scooped Misty up and settled her on his shoulders.

They walked to the truck and got in. Brian drove off to Matt’s house. Once he parked, he got out and opened Daphne’s and Misty’s doors.

“Bye Brian!” Misty smiled as she hugged his legs.

“See ya kiddo,” he smiled as he wrapped his arms around her.

Daphne watched as she ran inside.

“I had fun today,” she smiled as she turned to Brian.

“Me too,” Brian smiled.

“Yes,” she answered a few minutes later.

“Yes what?” he asked, puzzled.

“Yes, I forgive you,” she smiled.

“Thank God,” he breathed out as he tightly hugged her.

Daphne couldn’t help but smile as she melted in his embrace.

“Thanks a lot Daph,” he mumbled into her hair.

She smiled and nodded.

“Love you,” he whispered as he kissed her forehead.

“Love you too Bri,” she smiled as she reluctantly let go of him.

“I’ll see you around,” he smiled as he walked to the truck.

She walked up the pathway and to the door.

"Hey Daph!" she heard Brian call.

"Yeah?" she asked as she turned to him.

"You look really great by the way," he smiled.

Daphne couldn't help the blush that tinted her cheeks as she walked inside.

“I saw that,” Jade smirked as she stood by the window.

“Stalker much?” Daphne laughed.

“Just a little,” Jade smiled.

Daphne laughed and walked up to her.

“Love you sis,” she muttered as she tightly hugged her.

“Love you too sweetie,” Jade smiled.

“Where’d Misty go?” Daphne asked.

“Downstairs, Matt’s down their in his man-cave,” Jade muttered as she rolled her eyes.

Daphne laughed and walked towards the basement steps. She walked down them and heard gun-fire coming from the TV. She saw Matt sitting on the couch with his head-set on and his controller in hand. His eyes were glued to the TV and his thumbs were rapidly going across the controller. Misty was sitting on his lap and she was watching him play.

“You are such a dork,” she laughed.

“Shut up Daph!” Matt yelled without tearing his eyes away from the TV.

She laughed and shook her head before striding over to him.

“Love you Matt,” she smiled as she swooped down to kiss his cheek.

He tore his eyes away from the TV to send her a questioning look.

“Love you too?” he questioned.
