When Sin's Deep in My Blood; You'll Be the One to Fall

Slave...

9:30 PM

Matthew materialised in the main dining hall. Zachary was at the other end balancing a platter of food in one hand and waving his hand at the servant who was attempting to take the tray from him. The master vampire smirked faintly as he watched on.

“Master, let me carry that for you.”

“No. I will be fine...just go do something else...this isn’t for me.”

“But, master...I must carry it for you...it’s my responsibility.”

Zachary groaned his eyes shifting from green to yellow.

“No. No one goes near my patient except me or Shadows.”

The servant stopped badgering him at the mention of the master vampire’s name.

“I apologise, master...” he bowed and scurried away. Zachary sighed and shifted the tray of food glancing toward Matthew.

“You been there the whole time, Shadows?”

“Yes. Who’s the food for?”

Zachary darted his eyes back to the platter.

“This is for you and Jonathan...the pig ears are for Jonathan. The rest is for you.”

Matthew blinked.

“What for? I just fed.”

The younger vampire smiled, showing his fangs.

“This food is not for sustenance, Shadows. It’s got healing qualities.”

“Alright...I can understand why the wolf needs it, but me?”

Zachary stared hard at the master.

“You’re under a lot of stress.” He paused then ploughed onwards, knowing that what he was about to say could anger the older vampire, but also knowing that he needed to say it. “You have a lot of conflicting emotions warring inside you that normally would not be there...the fruit...” he indicated the fleshy peach and juicy watermelon, “will settle them so you can handle them more easily.”

Matthew narrowed his eyes at the other vampire.

“How do you know what I’m feeling?”

Zachary’s features took on a serious cast.

“I can read you, Shads.”

Matthew growled low, the muscles in his neck tightening. Green eyes flashed at him.

“Don’t worry, I can’t read your mind. I just sense your feelings; that’s all.”

“That’s all?”

“That’s all. Look, they’re all over the place and you need to get them under control.”

The master vampire heaved a sigh.

“Fine. We will go to my chambers now then.”

Zachary nodded and vanished, tray and all. Matthew rolled his eyes and followed him.

When they arrived in the master’s chambers they found Jonathan sitting on the rug back in human form. He was picking at his teeth with a toothpick and wearing a deep frown on his face. He glanced up as they materialised and shifted slightly.

“Pup, what are you doing? Zachary said-”

“I know...” Jonathan cut in softly. He kept picking at his teeth. “But...I needed to change.” He noticed the platter in Zachary’s hands and lifted his head slightly, nostrils flaring. “Do I smell ham?”

Matthew folded is arms.

“Yes, pig’s ears. Why did you need to change?”

The young Were licked his lips shrugging a little.

“I...had a feeling...” He glanced warily up at the master vampire. “Something’s going to happen.”

“You are right there.” He looked at Zachary. “Just put the tray on the bed. I will make sure we eat what’s there. I need to talk with him first.”

The green-eyed vampire nodded silently and did as Matthew instructed, before vanishing in silence. As soon as he’d gone, Matthew returned his attention to Jonathan. The young male sat peering up at him warily.

“What do you need to talk about, master?”

Matthew folded his arms and glowered down at him.

“Like I said, I have decided to keep you around.” He sank down on his haunches staring directly into Jonathan’s deep brown eyes. The youngling swallowed hard the hairs on the back of his neck rising, and bristling from the tension that began to build in the room between them.

“How do you mean...?”

Matthew sucked on a fang before answering, the words he spoke sending chills through the Werewolf’s body and a horrible sense of despair descending on his heart...

Meanwhile, Zachary reappeared in the soldiers’ quarters. The Rev and Synyster were standing in the centre of the large room glaring at each other. Zachary frowned sensing the tension in the atmosphere. He lifted his head, feeling his fangs beginning to ache. Bad feelings always caused his fangs to ache; and this was not the tingling ache that a vampire experience just before feed. It was a sharp ache that remained for several seconds, and then disappeared. He swallowed hard licking his lips, clenching his jaw and bracing a hand against the wall, watching the other two vampires.

The Rev stepped close to the more muscled vampire and leaned into his face.

“You are a fool. If you do that Matt will rip your throat out.”

“Let him try.” Synyster sneered, lip curling savagely. “I will risk it to rid us all of that Lycan and any other that is a threat to us.”

The Rev seized the front of his shirt and hurled him close so his nose pressed against Syn’s.

“You even try that, and I will kill you myself.”

Synyster snarled and jerked away from the taller vamp, but he didn’t dare hit The Rev. If the Lycan’s feared the Lieutenant then it was nothing on the fear that the vampires felt toward The Reverend. James Owen Sullivan was Matthew’s assassin and he was the one who would slip a stake into the brain of any vampire who dared defy the master.

“Have you gone soft or something? This is what I do!”

“Not, Jonathan. He is Matt’s to deal with.”

Zachary shifted on his spot observing the scene before him. Synyster heard the sound of his feet shuffling against the floor and swung his head around, scowling.

“Vengeance.”

Zachary took a step back, holding his body stiff. The lieutenant smiled icily as he slowly walked over to him, brown eyes narrowed.

“Where have you been?”

“None of your concern, Haner.”

“You been with the Lycan?”

Zachary bit his lip. Due to his ability to tell whether people were lying, he was extremely accomplished at not telling the truth. However, he knew that this was not a time to lie.

“Yeah, Shadows and I both went to see how he is. And, Shads is up there now telling him what he has decided.”

Synyster licked his lips.

“And, that is?”

The Rev cut in coldly, “That is none of your concern, Brian.”

“Well, like I said, as long as it involves the dog’s death.”

“Well, I hate to disappoint you then, Brian Haner Jr.”

They all turned to see the master vampire materialise before them. His eyes were hidden by his shades, his lips drawn together in a tight line. His massive arms folded across his chest, his gaze fixed on his lieutenant.

“Shadows...” Syn’s voice came out in a savage purr. “I still say you should get rid of him.”

“No. I have made my decision.” His eyes flashed behind his shades. “Tomorrow, at dawn, he will be Marked.”

Marking a slave was an age-old tradition; a piercing was made in the left nostril, a ring inserted, as a sign of bondage. Syn groaned and slumped down on one of the beds rubbing his hands over his face.

“You are not joking.” It wasn’t a question.

Matthew just nodded face set like stone. The other vampire sighed deeply.

“Right, well if you don’t mind...I think I will make myself scarce...and I do not plan to be there in the morning.” He paused, and then added. “I will be hunting...”

Zachary shifted nervously on his feet, eyes going a deep burgundy red.

“Hunting what?”

Synyster rolled his eyes.

“What I always hunt.” He stood and made to leave. Matthew held out his right hand and growled low.

“You leave the Weres be.”

“What?”

“You heard me. Until Jonathan has been Marked, you will leave well alone. And you will be here tomorrow.”

The two vampire’s locked eyes; Matthew slid his shades down staring coldly at his lieutenant.

“Do I make myself clear, Gates?”

Synyster bowed low.

“As you wish, master.” He snarled then vanished without another word. Matthew let his arm drop, rubbing his hand against his leather pants.

“Damn him. He always has to make things more difficult.”

The Rev rolled his neck on his shoulders.

“Well, what I said before stands. I will kill him, if need be.”

Zachary nodded. “It might be necessary one day...he’s too much of a loose cannon.”

Matthew looked toward the taller vampire.

“You said that?”

“He starts getting on my nerves too much, then yes, I will...and yes, I did.”

The Rev stretched all of his muscles. Matthew nodded to him then looked to Zachary.

“You have the instruments for the Marking?”

Eyes shifting back to green, the younger vampire inclined his head in the affirmative.

“Yes, I do.” He licked at the back of a fang. “I had a feeling that you were going to keep him around.”

Matthew rolled his eyes.

“You and your damned feelings...”

The master vampire disappeared before Zachary could comment. Sighing he looked across at the Rev.

“I’m going to go prepare...what are you going to do?”

The Rev’s lip curled.

“Going to go keep an eye on Brian. I made a promise to Matt, and I do not plan to break it...”

“What was that?”

The older vampire just shook his head and with a pop disappeared. Zachary rolled his eyes at the spot where the others had been standing and with a heavy sigh vanished as well.
