When Sin's Deep in My Blood; You'll Be the One to Fall

The sister

Somewhere on the Sanders’ Estate

8 PM

“How many, Vengeance?”

“Seven...cows.”

“You and your damned herbivores...”

“I doubt they are damned, Brian.”

“Shadows? When did you get here?”

“Just a moment ago. By the way, apparently Weres feed on cattle...”

“And how would you know that? Did that damned dog tell you that?”

“He’s not a dog, he’s a Were, have a little respect.”

“Respect? Why? I am not going to respect something I would tear to shreds. Anyway, you cannot talk, Shadows...you killed your own mother in cold blood. What was that? Disrespect all round.”

“She was a soft bitch; she did not deserve to live.”

“Oh, and you think that dog deserves to live? You are so deluded.”

“Deluded? I am not the one who skins his victims while they are still breathing.”

“No? But, ripping your mother’s heart out while she is still conscious is fine, is it?”

“Could you two give it a rest?”

“What did you just say to me, Zachary Baker?”

“I...I meant could Syn be quiet, Shads...no offence meant to you, of course...”

“Yeah right, you just said-”

“Enough, be quiet the both of you.” Silence. Then. “Where’s James?”

“Here, Sanders. I had eight deer. Venison is tasty...”

“What? Do not tell me you’re feeding on herbivores too?”

“Well, unfortunately, Brian, we are not allowed to hunt humans and you’ve taken all the predators. So, yes...I’m stuck with deer.”

“Deer’s not bad, Syn. You should give it a try.”

“No. I want to hunt Weres...”

“Speaking of Weres...what are you going to do about Jonathan?”

“Why do you care, Vengeance?”

“Because, Gates, I do. Shads?”

“I’ve decided to revive the ancient Sanders’ tradition.”

“You what?”

“Were slaves.”

“Hell. You’re pulling my fangs.”

“I am deadly serious. I wouldn’t question me on that, Brian.”

“When did you decide that?”

Another long silence.

“Matt? When?”

“Just now, James.”

At that instant, moonlight shone through a gap in the cloud-covered night sky, lighting the small glade where the four vampires sprawled out on the ground. They were satiated after their hunt and were conversing as they basked beneath the moon’s soft glow.

Matthew sat propped up against a tree picking absently at his fangs, blood spattered across his white shirt.

The Rev lounged to his right scratching at his neck a bored expression on his face. Zachary was crouched opposite them, green eyes glittering in satisfaction, fresh blood staining his fangs pink.

Synyster stood opposite the other three, arms crossed firmly over his chest a deep scowl set on his features, the tips of his fangs protruding over his lips.

“You’re mad. Are you telling me you are going to let that dog live?”

The master vampire shot an icy look toward his lieutenant.

“Yes, that is what I am telling you.”

“What the hell for?”

Matthew groaned.

“Do tell me, when have I ever needed to give reasons for the things I do?”

Synyster growled.

“Never. However, this is a little different, do you not think?”

“No. It is no different to any other time.”

The master vampire rubbed his shoulder blades back against the rough bark of the tree, hissing as he relieved an itch. The Rev glanced at him.

“Does it have something to with that document we found?”

Matthew snarled in response.

“Is that a yes, Shadows?” Synyster sneered.

The master vampire sprang to his feet with a loud hiss, eyes glowing blood red.

“Do not push me, Brian.”

Zachary frowned his happy expression vanishing.

“Hey, Gates wasn’t supposed to know about that...”

Synyster laughed bitterly.

“You must think I’m stupid, then.”

Matthew countered, tersely, “You’re more than stupid if you think anything you say or do will make me change my mind.”

Synyster swung around to face him directly, moving forward so they were standing extremely close to each other.

“You have no idea what kind of trouble that Lycan could cause if you allow him free rein...”

“I never said I would allow that. He will be my slave...my servant.”

The master vampire was almost thinking out loud.

The truth was that he had not really been thinking about what he was going to do; it had only just come to him whilst he had been feeding on a recently dead human that he had exhumed in the nearby cemetery. He wasn’t breaking any rules; after all, it wasn’t technically hunting if the human was already dead. Anyway, while he had drunk his fill, he had found his mind wandering to the young Were resting in his chambers.

“What does that mean?” Synyster narrowed his eyes at Matthew.

“It means if he ever does anything to betray any of us...or if he tries to escape, I will kill him.”

The master vampire tightened his jaw as he met Synyster’s gaze, daring him to push his luck. The other vampire backed up holding both his hands up in front of him as if warding him off.

“Okay...okay...as long as you have complete control over him, I have no problem with you keeping him around.”

The Rev gave a soft snort as if he knew that Synyster wasn’t being entirely honest. Matthew was a little more trusting than the elder vampire was; yet, he was still extremely wary. He growled low in warning his gaze burning into Synyster’s face.

“You will keep away from him.”

The lieutenant inclined his head in submission to the master vampire’s command, and then he vanished from the glade.

Matthew sighed heavily and massaged his biceps, jaw still clenched tight. Zachary stood and looked at him.

“So, Johnny’s going to be your slave...you told him yet?”

“No. I thought I’d wait until you’ve checked him over again.”

The green-eyed vampire nodded.

“Sure, want me to do it now?”

Matthew shook his head.

“Tomorrow.”

The Rev shifted on his spot leaves rustling beneath his lean body.

“So, what did that parchment say?”

The master vampire stared across the estate, body held still breathing slowly; a cold breeze blew across the glade. The other two shivered watching him warily.

“Matthew?”

Matthew squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his fists.

“On second thoughts...Zachary...go check on Jonathan now.”

He looked at The Rev.

“I need to talk with James...alone.”

Zachary frowned slightly looking between the two elder vampires, and then he nodded and with a soft pop disappeared.

As soon as he had vanished, Matthew turned and sank down on the ground, sitting cross-legged. He pulled at several tufts of grass gathering his thoughts. The Rev shifted position so he was more comfortable and waited quietly for the master to begin.

Matthew pressed his tongue against the base of his left fang before speaking.

“He’s a half-breed.”

The Rev stiffened.

“Human and Were?”

“No. Vampire, Werewolf.”

The colour drained from the lanky vampire’s face.

“Hell’s Bells...”

“Indeed.”

Matthew rubbed at his jaw.

“His...parents...”

“Which one is the vampire?”

“His mother...”

The master vampire paused a strained look in his eyes.

“His father is Richard Seward, Esquire.”

“Ah, he’s very important...who’s the mother?”

Matthew’s jaw tightened hard a tremor racing up his spine.

“Jimmy...” he bit his lip remembering the name on the bottom of the parchment, “do you remember my little sister...?”

The Rev’s eyes widened hugely, guessing exactly where this line of reasoning was headed.

“No, don’t tell me she’s-?”

Matthew answered flatly, “Yes. My little sister, Luna Sanders, is his mother.”

The Rev stood shock written all over his face.

“Hell...Hell...I knew your sister mated with a Werewolf...but...damnations...that makes Johnny your...your nephew!”

Mathew nodded slowly, jaw working furiously, expression tight.

“Yes. It does.”

“Damnations...”

The Rev rubbed at his arms and stared toward the mansion.

“Will...will you tell Johnny? Or do you think he already knows?”

Matthew rumbled in his throat.

“I’ll not tell him. If he already knows then he can be the first to mention it. If he doesn’t...then...he’ll never find out.”

The Rev smirked faintly.

“Keep him in the dark, so to speak?”

“Right on. If he’s going to be my slave, then it’s not necessary for him to know.”

“Right. Not going to tell anyone else?”

“No. This is between you and me. I only told you because I know I can trust you to keep your mouth shut.”

The older vampire nodded, features set solemnly.

“You can always trust me, Matt.”

The master vampire allowed a wistful smile to play on his lips as he rose to his feet readying to return to the mansion.

“You’re the only person I trust, Jimmy...”

The Rev nodded an equally wistful expression in his eyes.

“The feeling’s mutual.”

They stood for a moment longer just letting the words echo between them, then they both dematerialised at the same time, leaving the glade in silence as dark clouds gathered in the sky above.
