Set up

Brian had just dropped Zack off at the vacation home when he decided to find a gift for his boyfriend. With a smile on his face Brian pulled up to a jewelry shop. He had already been to the store to pick out all the necessary items for a romantic picnic date. Inside the store Brian looked around at all the display cases. He searched from necklaces to anklets looking for the perfect item. He hadn’t found anything he wanted to purchase, until he was walking out the door. His eyes caught on a case of engagement rings; he spent only seconds looking at the case, Brian’s eyes zoned in on one ring in particular. It was a simple white gold band that had five small diamonds in a row. The top layer of the ring looked like it was overlapping.

Brian shook his head; feeling like his brain was trying to pull him somewhere else at that point in time. With a sigh Brian walked out of the shop, feeling more confused than he had in a while. Sitting down on a park bench he pulled out his phone, he found Mattie's number and hit send. It rang only two or three times before the younger male picked up.

“Hello?” Mattie sounded a bit out of breath.

“Hey Matt, is this a bad time?” Brian hoped he didn’t catch the Matt’s’ in the middle of something intimate.

“No man, I was just chasing Jared down when he took off with the box of rice I need to finish lunch.” Brian couldn’t help but laugh, yeah that sounded like Jared alright.

“Hey man I had a question.” He only paused for a few seconds before continuing. “Did I ever propose to your brother?”

An intake of breath was clearly heard over the line. “No. Well not that I know of but I’m sure Zack would have said yes, and one of you I know, would have told Matt.”

“Okay thanks. I have this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that says I should remember something and it started when I walked past a box of engagement rings.” With a sigh Brian sat back and rubbed at the corner of his eyes.

“Do you want to marry him?” A mixer started up in the background.

“These feelings just snuck up on me, it’s not even as if I remembered it all at once. The feelings slowly trickled back and I see exactly why I loved him before. I’m so damn confused because I feel like I am still missing some major part of me that I need to get back.” Brian sat on that bench talking to Mattie for another half of an hour before hanging up.

Once he snapped his phone closed he leaned forward on his knees. He sat there looking out at the jewelry shop for the next fifteen minutes. Climbing back into his truck Brian turned it on, not really knowing where to go from there. He found himself driving down the highway headed back to their old town. Pulling up to their old house he put the car in park and shut it off.
Brian climbed out of the truck easily, looking up at the damaged part of their home. With a sigh he made his way inside. If asked he wouldn’t be able to tell anyone why he was there, he didn’t even know the answer to that himself. Up the stairs and into the bedroom was where Brian’s feet took him. Raking his fingers through his hair he looked around. Nothing was different than when they had left. His eyes zeroed in on the closet, throwing the sliding door open he scanned the area. Nothing was different; he moved clothes and shoes out of the way. Still, nothing seamed important, Brian fell to his knees on the wood floor of the walk in closet. Tears slipped down his cheeks, he felt so fucking lost in that second. He fell forward slightly, catching himself on his palms.

In that second his eyes caught it. A slightly lifted floor board; Brian scooted across the floor, grabbing a near by box from the shelf he rummaged through it. What was he looking for? Brian didn’t even know. When his fingers touched the cold object he knew, he didn’t know how but he knew. Using his free hand he opened the knife, using it to pry up the floor board.

A black bag was the only thing under the board. Brian picked it up and looked inside. There was a little black velvet box resting inside of gray tissue paper. Brian pulled it out and opened it up. His breath caught. The same ring, the one he had seen earlier that day rested in the box.

Brian’s hand shook, pulling the ring free from the box. Memories flew at him left and right from the first time they met to the point of his accident. A lot of memories flooded him, not all of them but the ones that concerned Zack and the boys. Brian remembered buying the ring for Zack three weeks before the accident. He was going to propose two weeks later.

Brian stood, snatching the bag off the floor. He put the ring back into the box and set it gently in the bag. He knew what he was going to give Zack tonight. Smiling from ear to ear Brian made his way back to the vacation home. When he arrived he pulled a very confused Mattie outside. When Brian pulled out the box he understood. “You’re going to propose? Is this what you were doing today?”

Mattie pulled the ring out of the box and inspected it. “I had that under the floor board at our old house.” Mattie looked up at him entirely shocked. “I went back, I didn’t know why at first, it’s like after I saw the ring in the jewelry store my mind was telling me something. I listened and found this in the closet. I remembered”

“That’s great but what exactly do you remember?” Mattie handed the ring back to Brian who quickly put it away looking around to make sure they weren’t being watched.

“From the moment he and I met to the accident. Everything that concerns him and the kids between those times came back.” Brian beamed.

“That’s great!” Mattie brought him into a tight hug. The back door opened and there stood Matt with a raised brow. The hugging men pulled back, both smiling.
“He remembers Zack.” Mattie beamed; Brian could have sworn there was a sparkle in his eyes. Matt joined in on the excitement with a smile of his own.

“I need your guys’ help.” Mattie's eyes widened when he realized what Brian was insinuating.

“We get to help you plan it?” He asked nearly bouncing out of his shoes.

“And possibly set it up?” Brian hoped, nearly biting a hole in his lip while he waited for an answer. He was shocked by a very un-masculine squeal that came from Mattie.

“As long as you watch the kids while we set up.” Mattie bartered with his hopefully soon to be brother-in-law.

“I don’t have a problem with that.”

Two hours later Brian found himself in the house with three kids and a boyfriend that was currently wondering where the other two males had gone. “And I thought I smelled food.”

“Oh yeah Mattie whipped up something for the kids earlier.” Brian had to lie. “You and I are going out tonight okay?”

“Okay.” Zack smiled sitting down on the couch next to Brian. Jared was watching cartoons next to his dad. Kage was happily crawling around on the floor when Zack handed Brian Bentley. The baby immediately started crying from being woken. Brian adjusted the baby so he was laying up his front, Bentleys head resting on his shoulder, facing his neck.

“Shh, its okay baby,” Brian slowly rubbed circles on the baby’s back, patting it every so often. “Daddy’s got you.”

Zack watched Brian hold the baby; his actions seemed so familiar to him. Zack couldn’t place why until he heard Brian start singing to Bentley. The same song he always use too sing before the accident. Then he knew. The baby quieted down in seconds while being patted and sung to.

The front door opened, Matt and Mattie snuck into the house with bags behind their back. Zack couldn’t see what was in them but he had a feeling they were sex toys, Brian knew different. Standing from the couch he went to talk to Matt being careful not to wake the baby.

“We set up something special, when you are at the spot we picked for dinner you will see a string of lights hanging in the trees, follow them. The place beyond the lights is our surprise to both of you but you have to promise not to go there until after dinner.” Matt stated handing Brian a glass of coffee they had bought him at the store.

“Okay I promise.” Brian smiled and popped the top off his bottle.

“We will leave twenty minutes before you do. We’ll take the kids and finish the set up, dinner will be put out and such. We will finish the set up on the surprise and be out of there before you arrive.” Mattie smiled, god he knew Zack and Brian would like their surprise. “Now its time to promise me something.”

“What?” Brian had a raised brow. What more could he promise.

“Promise me you two won’t get it on before you go to our surprise.” Was he serious? Would Zack want sex right after? Oh well, if so it could wait a bit longer.

“Okay, promised.”

“You need to go get ready Mr. Get a shower and I will get Zack ready.” Brian smiled to himself putting the sleeping baby in the middle of the Matt’s bed to go get ready.
