Unholy Nightmare

Battlefield

After we left California, it's been like a battle in a never ending war. Every place we went was always littered with bodies being feasted on by the dead. The places we've been is like being on a battlefield that's filled with dead bodies or just fighting those undead beings to stay alive. Sometimes I think we'll never find a place to get away from them. I feel like we're a group of nomads moving from one place to another in search of a home. Who knows if we'll actually find a place to call our own? Night is closely coming and I needed to find us a place to have a good night's rest and I needed to do it quickly. Off in the distance, I could see a farm house so I picked up my phone and hit the speed dial to Brian's cell.

"Hey man. What's up?" Brian answered.

"Relay to the others that there's a farm house just up the road and that's where we're staying tonight."

"Is that such a good idea? I mean what if that's someone's home?" he questioned.

"I haven't seen any lights and if there are people...maybe I can convince them to let us stay the night."

"Alright. I'll let the others know." Brian said ending the call. I pulled into the dirt driveway and drove up to the house. I cut the engine and got out to check the surroundings.

The people who live or lived here must have had horses because of the corral not far from the house. The house was a baby blue color with pure white shudders and a wrap-around porch. A red barn sat at least 10 yards away. I went around the corner and was about to see if anyone lived here when a grave caught my eye. I stepped down from the porch and went over to the fresh grave. A stone was placed at the head instead of a cross or whatever. The writing on the stone read:

Otis 'Nightmare' Lowe
Died on July 22, 2014 at 4:23 pm
due to the Flesh Eaters

A Good Friend, Mentor, Husband, Son, and Teacher.
Be At Peace My Dear Friend

Flowers were placed on the man's grave out of respect. The grave brought back the memory of my wife and it took all I had not to break down and just ball my eyes out. I grabbed some flowers from next to the porch and placed them on the grave out of respect.

"Does anyone live here Matt?" Jimmy asked almost scaring me right out of my skin.

"Not anymore."

"What do you mean?" he asked and I stepped aside to show him the grave. I watched as his eyes traveled down to the ground.

"Oh damn. At least someone gave this man a proper burial."

"Yeah. Come on Jimmy. Let's get some of our things into the house and call it a night." I said and we walked over to the cars. I got Bella out and started unloading some of the food from my trunk. Hopefully this place will give us a few days of rest without the constant battle of killing those flesh eaters.
