Right after I moved the bags I had in my car into my new apartment I had no choice but to go and face Zack. The first time since our fight and I’m not exactly bearing good news. As I drove towards his house the thought of me leaving really sunk in. I won’t see anybody anymore. I won’t hear from them anymore. Zack will maybe even remarry, have kids. Have the life that I was supposed to have with him. God, how I wish things were different.

I pulled into the driveway and saw that he was here. My nerves were going crazy and I was beyond nervous. I grabbed the little envelope that held the papers that determined the end of Zack and I’s marriage. I would no longer be a wife. I opened the door and made my way up the steps and knocked. About a minute later he opened the door.

“What are you doing here?” He asked.

“I’m the bearer of bad news.” I handed him the envelope. “Sign them.” He looked at me confusion written all over his face.

“What?”

“It’s divorce papers. Zack, just sign them. I’m here for that and to get my stuff.”

“Where are you going?”

“I got my own place. I’m cutting ties with all of you. I’ve already said bye to everyone else. Now I just need you to sign them and let me go.”

“I’m not signing these.” He shook his head. “I’m not letting you go.”

“You don’t have a choice. It’s either you sign them right here or I take you to court. You could make it easy or hard. It’s ultimately your decision, but regardless I am divorcing you.”

“Why are you doing this Lex?”

“You know why I am.”

“Because of the other night?”

I nodded. “That has something to do with it, yes. It’s not all of it though.”

“Well can I get an explanation?”

“I’m just tired of being so sad and everything always falling apart. I can’t have a good stable marriage with you. I can’t just be friends with Brian and I’m no longer a mother. All these bad memories I have need to disappear. I need to become an independent, happy woman. I need to let myself get past this fairy tale life.” He looked at me for a moment.

“Okay.” He finally said. “If I have no choice, I guess I better just sign the damn thing.”

“Can I get my stuff?” He nodded and I made my way up the stairs into what used to be our room. I hurried as fast as I could to get my stuff packed up, but I realized how unprepared for this I was.

“Here.” Zack came in and handed me the envelope.

“Um, thanks.”

“Do you need any help?”

“If I want to get this all done today, yes.” He nodded and started to pack stuff into bags and boxes.

A few hours passed and I had the majority of my stuff packed into my car. I was going to have to make multiple trips, but that’s okay.

“Alright, I’ll be back to pack more up.” I told Zack. He nodded and I left.

It took a whole five trips to move everything. It was a good thing that I didn’t have to move any furniture. I already had that taken care of.

“Well that’s the last of it.”

“This is it, then.”

“Yep. I appreciate the things you’ve done for me. I’m sorry that it has turned out this way.”

He nodded. “Me too.” I quickly gave him a hug and then left what used to be my perfect little family.
