I was standing there looking down at Brian’s son when my phone started to vibrate in my pocket. I handed the baby to Madison and looked at the number, it was restricted. I stepped out into the hall and answered it.
“Hello?” I answered
“Well I didn’t think you’d answer.” The male voice said
“Who is this?” I asked
“You don’t recognize the voice of your soon to be father in law?” He asked
“How did you get my number?” I asked
“I know people Jimmy. And I wanted to call and tell you that I will get a hold of Brayden.” He said
“No you won’t. I won’t let you get to her.” I said
“We’ll see. I’ve come close to killing her before, this time I won’t hold back.” He said
He hung up and Matt was standing beside me.
“Who was that Jim? You look pretty steamed.” He said
“Brayden’s dad.” I said
“What did he want this time? Wait… How did he get your number?” He asked
“He said he knows people and he called to tell me that he’ll get a hold of Brayden.” I said
“Have you told her about his little visit yet?” He asked
I shook my head.
“I don’t want her to be paranoid.” I said
“Understandable. Did he say what he’d do?” He asked
“He said he’s almost killed her once and when he gets a hold of her he won’t fail.” I said
“Go home, leave Payson at your parents and tell her.” He said
“I’m going to give her my mace.” I said
“Why do you have pepper spray?” He asked
“I’m not really sure, I think I bought it for Johnny but I don’t remember.” I said
“You know he carries pepper spray in his book bag.” He said
I smiled.
“New material to make fun of him with.” I said
“Go home bud.” He said
I nodded, we walked back into the hospital room and Brayden was curled up in one of the chairs with her eyes closed.
“Baby are you asleep?” I asked
“No.” She said
“Do you want to head home? I’ve got to talk to you.” I said
She perked up and curiously cocked her head to the side.
“Yeah.” She said
“We’ll see you guys tomorrow.” I said
Everyone nodded and I took Brayden’s hand in mine and we walked out to the car.
“Is everything alright?” She asked
I ignored her question as we were driving, she looked concerned. I don’t doubt her father’s skills of capturing her and it scares me, her and Payson are a huge part of my life now and I couldn’t stand to lose either of them. I pulled into our driveway and got out; I walked around the front of the car and opened her door holding out my hand. She took it and we walked into the house together.
“Again I ask; is everything alright?” She asked
“Before I tell you I have a present.” I said
She nodded confused and I sprinted upstairs into our bedroom, I rifled through the closet until I found the unopened can of mace. I walked back downstairs and handed it to her.
“Mace?” She asked
“I want you to carry it with you.” I said
“Okay Jimmy I’m officially scared. What’s going on?” She asked
“It’s your dad.” I said
“What about him?” She asked
“He’s out of prison and he’s looking for you.” I said
Her jaw dropped.
“Don’t let him get me Jimmy.” She whispered.
“I’ll try my best baby.” I said
She nodded and I pulled her to me.
“I swear I’ll try my best.” I said
“I promise I’ll carry this stupid Mace.” She said
I smiled and kissed her hair.
“Well we have the whole rest of the day to ourselves.” I said
“What do you want to do?” She asked
I pretended to think.
“You.” I said jokingly
“JimJam.” She said
“You asked baby. But you want to shower I can tell so let’s go shower.” I said
“How’d you know I wanted to shower?” She asked
“One time I remember you saying the thought of your dad made your skin crawl and it makes you want to shower.” I said
“You remember that?” She asked
“I remember everything.” I said
“Come on lover boy let’s go shower.” She said
“Together?” I asked hopefully
“Nope.” She said prancing up the stairs.
I followed her into our bedroom and I sat on the bed while she disappeared into the bathroom.
“Jimmy can you come here? I can’t reach the towel.” She said
“I’m coming shorty.” I said
When I walked into the bathroom she was reaching up in the closet in her bra and underwear.
“You are so short babe.” I said
I reached up and pulled the towels down, she was smiling up at me.
“That’s a shit-eating grin. What did you do?” I asked
Her grin grew bigger and I looked down and squinted my eyes at her.
“I love you.” She said
“I love you too?” I asked
She pulled me into a hug.
“You’re being weird.” I said
I pulled away.
“Am I?” She asked running her finger down my chest.
“What do you want from me woman?” I asked
“Why are you wearing a button up? It’s alarming.” She said
I rolled my eyes and pulled the shirt off.
“Better?” I asked
“Better.” She smiled.
She hugged me again and I felt her playing with my belt.
“Woman.” I said
“Man?” She asked
“What are you doing?” I asked
“Ugh.” She said
“I’m going to go lay down.” I said
She nodded and started the shower. What does she want? I took my pants off and sat on the edge of our bed. A few minutes later I was singing a song in my head with my eyes closed. I felt my arm get tugged on and I was standing.
“Keep your eyes closed.” She said
“Brayden are you going to murder me?” I asked
“Nope.” She said
I kept my eyes closed and then I was wet, I opened them and I was standing in the shower with her.
“I still have my boxers on.” I said
“Well if I took them off you would of opened your eyes.” She said
“That I would have.” I said
I bent down and pulled off the boxers and threw them out of the shower. I pulled her naked body to mine and hugged her. She still looked worried.
“It’ll be okay baby.” I said
She nodded and we showered talking a little about the wedding as we did so.
“I want another tattoo.” She said as we were drying off.
“What do you want?” I asked
“I don’t know.” She said
“What about a butterfly on your wrist?” I asked
“That would be cute. Maybe.” She said
I smiled and we walked into the bedroom. My phone started blaring the ringtone that belongs to our manager.
“Hello?” I answered
“Hey Jim already called the others but I need you guys to come up for a meeting. You’ll only be gone a week.” He said
“When?” I asked
“Tomorrow.” He said
“Fuck... Okay, I’ll be there.” I said
“See you then.” He said
I hung up and Brayden was looking at me.
“He needs us for a band meeting tomorrow. I’ll be gone for a week.” I said
“Okay.” She said “Is that okay with you?” I asked
“I mean I’ll miss you but you have to work.” She said
I nodded and pulled her into a hug.
“Let’s take a nap.” I said
She nodded and we both laid down stark naked in bed and took a nap.
