Looking at Matt ‘I’m in labor’ rang in my ears.
“Baby?” Brayden said
“Where are you?” I asked
“On our way to the hospital.” She said
“I’ll be there.” I said
We hung up and I stood up freaking out.
“Breathe Jimmy your daughter is on the way.” Matt said
I nodded and shuffled around getting my shoes on.
“I’m driving you’re too shook up.” He said
He took my keys and we went outside locking the house up and getting in my car.
“Drive faster.” I said
“I’m twenty above.” Matt said
I was shaking in my seat.
“Breathe bud.” Matt said
We pulled into the hospital parking lot and I ran inside and up to the counter.
“Is a Brayden Winchester checked in?” I asked
“Yes she is sir. Are you family?” She asked
“Fiancé.” I said
“And you?” She asked Matt
“Brother.” He lied
She nodded and gave us the room number. We rushed to the room and I walked in.
“Hey baby.” She said
She was in a hospital gown and she was walking around with IVs in her arms.
“Hey.” I said
“We’re going to go out in the waiting room and call everyone.” Val said dragging Matt out of the room. Brayden looked at me and then doubled over.
“Are you okay?” I asked
“It’s a contraction. They really fucking hurt.” She said starting to cry
I rubbed her back and she wrapped her arms around my waist.
“I thought my period cramps were bad.” She cried
Oh god if this was worse than that I’m in for a night.
“Here lay down.” I said
I led her over to her bed and she laid down, I sat in front of her and she took a deep breath.
“How are we doing in here?” A doctor said coming in.
“I’m in pain Dr. May.” She cried.
“What hurts Brayden?” Dr. May asked
“My lower back.” She cried
“Are you the father?” The doctor asked me
“Yes ma’am.” I said
“Can I talk to you in the hall?” She asked
I nodded and kissed Brayden’s had and followed the doctor out of the room.
“Mr.?” She asked
“Sullivan.” I said
“Mr. Sullivan I understand that you are both first time parents so with her this process may take ten to twenty hours. Maybe more and maybe less it all depends on her body. She’s still in early Labor right now but she could be transferring into active labor soon because of her back pain.. You. Are you going to be okay in there?” She asked
“Yeah. I think I’m going to be okay.” I said
“It’s going to get nasty.” She said
I nodded and we walked back into the room. She was curled over her stomach groaning.
“Brayden I’m going to check you.” The doctor said
Brayden nodded and rolled on to her back and bent her knees. The doctor checked her and left.
“Jimmy.” She whined
“I’m right here baby.” I said
“My back hurts so bad.” She said
“Want me to massage it?” I asked
She wimped her nodded.
“You’ve got to sit up for me.” I said
She sat up and sat cross-legged, I grabbed the hospital pillow and put it in her lap and leaned over it. I got in the bed behind her and one of my legs was on either side of her. I held onto her sides and dig my thumbs into her lower back.
“Who is all here?” She asked after about ten minutes
“Do you want me to go look?” I asked
“Yeah.” She said
“Would you like me to bring anyone back with me?” I asked
“Madison, Val and Papa Gates if he’s here.” I said
“Okay. I will be right back.” I said
I got up and walked out of the room and into the waiting room.
“How’s she doing?” Madison was the first person to talk
“She’s in pain but she wanted to know who all was here.” I said
“All of us.” Val said
She was right they were all there. Matt, Brian, Zacky, Johnny, Lacey, Gena, Val, her mom, Papa Gates and my mom and dad?
“Mom Dad?” I asked
“Yeah.” My mom said hugging me
“What are you doing here?” I asked
“My sons having a baby and you’re asking what I’m doing here. Stupid.” My dad said hugging me.
I heard Brayden cry out in pain.
“Was the Brayden?” Her mom asked
I nodded.
“Madison, Val, Papa come with me she wants you three.” I said
“Me?” Her mom asked
“No.” I said
Madison, Val, Papa and, I walked back to her room and he was still in the same position as I left her but she was hunched over more and she was crying. I got back into my original position and started to massage her again.
“Brayden sweetheart.” Papa said
She looked up and reached for his hand.
“It’ll be okay.” He said
Madison sat in the corner looking scared for her life.
“How many hours has it been?” Val asked after a long long time.
“About thirty.” Papa said
“KILL ME NOW!” Brayden screamed
The doctor came in and checked her.
"How are you doing Brayden?" She asked
“I want to push.” She said
“A few more minutes. Do you want the shot? This is your last chance to get it.” She asked
“No. I will not get a needle that big in my back.” She said
The doctor nodded.
“I’ll be back in a few.” She said
Brayden leaned back onto my chest, I was still sitting behind her. She sat up and curled over her stomach and I rubbed her back since the gown was open.
“I need to push.” She said
“Fight the urge.” I said
“I can’t.” She said
“You can baby. You can do it.” I said
She huffed and cried some more.
“I can’t fight it anymore Jimmy.” I said
The doctor came in.
“She’s wanting to push.” Papa said
The doctor looked at us and Brayden.
“I can’t fight it.” She cried.
“It’s time guys.” She said
"TIme for what?" Brayden asked
“To have the baby.” The doctor.
“NO. No, no,no,no I’m not ready.” She said
“You are. Now who’s staying in here?” She asked
“Jimmy.” She said
Papa, Madison and Val all walked out.
“I thought you wanted them all in here?” I asked
“Maybe the next kid but right now I need you.” She said
I went to climb off of the bed.
“No. Doctor can he stay right there?” She asked
“If you are comfortable with him there.” She said
Brayden nodded.
“Brayden there is a ceiling mirror if you want to know what it looks like and what’s going on. You too Jimmy.” She said
I looked up and indeed there was a mirror there.
“Okay.” Brayden said
“Ready to have a baby?” I asked
“No but do I have a choice?” She asked
“No.” I said
She smiled.
“Push now Brayden.” The Doctor said
Brayden grabbed both of my hands and pushed making a very gross sound.
“Sullivan this is all your fault.” She growled
“Yes I know.” I said
“Again.” The doctor said
“It hurts.” Brayden cried
“If you need to break my hand baby.” I said
“You’re a drummer baby.” She said
“I don’t care. Just squeeze my god damned hand.” I said
She pushed and squeezed my hands making another sound that broke my heart.
“At least two more big pushes.” The doctor said
She pushed and sweat poured down her face.
“One more big one baby. We’re almost done.” I said
“I’m too tired.” She said
“Brayden come on we’re at her shoulders one more and she’ll be out.” The doctor said
She squeezed my hands and pushed long and hard. I heard a cry and Brayden sighed. She had to deliver whatever the gross yucky stuff was and then she laid down on my chest. I got out from under her and the doctor gave me Payson.
“Seven Pounds and one ounce. Sixteen inches.” The doctor said
I smiled.
“What’s her name?” She asked
“Payson Marie Sullivan.” I said
“I’ll have you two sign this when she’s awake.” She said
I nodded and she left. I looked down at my little daughter in my arms. She was so fucking cute.
“Welcome to the family.” I whispered rocking her
